The year’s biggest poker tournament, Event #73: $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em MAIN EVENT – World Championship is now well underway with the second starting flight also over. Last year, the Main Event attracted a total of 7,874 entries (Day 1A – 925, Day 1B – 2,378 and Day 1C – 4,571) which was the second-largest field in the history of the WSOP Main Event. The 50th-anniversary special Main Event has already logged in 3,250 entries (Day 1A – 1,335, Day 1B – 1,915) and is well on its way to eclipsing past records. The number to beat is 8,773 entries which were recorded in 2006. Day 1C traditionally has always seen the highest number of entries, and with late registration available until the start of play on Day 2, the chances of this tournament overshadowing its predecessors is a definite possibility.

Lance Bradley, President & Editor in Chief of PocketFives, shared an interesting tweet regarding the possibility of this year’s Main Event attracting the largest field.

2018 was a breakout year for Indian poker, especially in the WSOP Main Event. Nishant Sharma made the country proud as he became the first Indian to crack the top 50 in the Main Event. He ultimately ended his run in 34th place for $230,475 (~₹1.58 Crores). Eight other Indians had also scored in the event including Vivek Rughani (88th for $77,695 – ₹53.47 Lakhs), PokerGuru Ambassador Kartik Ved (128th for $57,010 – ₹39.20 Lakhs), Jaideep Sajwan (589th for $23,940 – ₹16.44 Lakhs), PokerStars India Team pro Aditya Agarwal (717th for $19,900 – ₹13.66 Lakhs), Rohan Bhasin (731st for $19,900 – ₹13.66 Lakhs), Yudhister Jaswal (977th for $15,920 – ₹10.93 Lakhs), Sriharsha Doddapaneni (1,057th for $15,920 – ₹10.93 Lakhs) and Apoorva Goel (1,148th for $15,000 – ₹10.30 Lakhs).

While Sharma, Rughani, and Ved will all be looking to better their previous year’s performances, India’s poker pioneer Aditya Agarwal will be looking to close the gap on the world record of 10 Main Event cashes currently held by Berry Johnston. Agarwal has seven cashes at the WSOP Main Event till date.

In that vein, Day 1B pulled in a total of 1,915 entries and over the course of five levels of play, the field was whittled down to 1,417 runners. Six Indians were among the Day 1B qualifiers with Yudhishter Jaswal leading the charge and bagging 193,400 (242 big blinds) in chips. Aditya Systla (162,700 – 203 big blinds), Young Gun Siddharth Karia (123,300 – 154 big blinds), Ankit Ahuja (111,100 – 139 big blinds), Minissha Lamba (83,500 – 104 big blinds) and Kunal Patni (66,500 – 83 big blinds), rounded out the Indian chip counts. These six Day 1B survivors will be joining their Day 1A compatriots, led by Young Gun Abhinav Iyer (99 big blinds – 79,500), for Day 2AB on July 6.

Event #73: $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em MAIN EVENT – World Championship – Day 1B

Day 1B kicked off at 12 PM (Pacific Time Zone) on July 4, and after nearly 16 hours of play, only 1,417 runners were left in the running.

Carrying Team India’s fight to Day 2AB was a battalion of six challengers, led by London-based player Yudhishter Jaswal who happens to be married to PokerStars India Team Pro Muskan Sethi. Having already cashed in five bracelet events this summer, Jaswal is eyeing another big score here after bagging the 34th biggest stack of the day of 193,400 (242 big blinds).

Fresh from his tremendous run in Event #71: SALUTE TO WARRIORS – $500 No-Limit Hold’em, where Aditya Systla narrowly missed the final table, finishing 14th for $5,819 (~₹4 Lakhs), the Indian contender is back at work. He yet again had an impressive start in Day 1B and made it through to Day 2AB with 162,700 (203 big blinds).

WSOP first timer Young Gun Siddharth Karia has enjoyed a successful debut. He has already picked up two scores, with his most recent ITM finish coming in Event #61: $400 Colossus where he placed 89th for $4,910 (~₹3.38 Lakhs). Though the promising player missed out on getting his picture taken with his cricketing idol Shane Warne who busted out on Day 1A, he made it through to Day 2AB with a commendable stack of 123,300 (154 big blinds).

Team India’s poster boy, Ankit Ahuja, who took down Event #75: $1,100 NLH MonsterStack of the Venetian DeepStack Championship for $266,824 (~₹1.84 Crores) is surprisingly yet to open his scorecard at the WSOP this year and may just accomplish that goal by running deep in the Main Event. He amassed 111,100 (139 big blinds) in chips by the end of Day 1B.

Former Bollywood actress and celebrity poker player Minissha Lamba is another player who banked her first-ever WSOP score this year in Event #50: Monster Stack – $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em. She netted $5,005 (~₹3.46 Lakhs) for a 252nd place finish. She is among the Team India group advancing to Day 2AB with a stack of 83,500 (104 big blinds).

The only remaining Indian to advance to Day 2AB from Day 1B is Kunal Patni. Patni was one of the few Indians to feature in the day’s live coverage. During level 5, action folded to a player in the cutoff, and he raised to 1,300. Patni 3-bet to 3,400 from the button. The blinds folded and cutoff made it 9,000. Patni tanked for a while and then decided to 5-bet to 56,900, effectively putting the cutoff all-in for substantially less. Cutoff folded and Patni raked in the pot. He eventually ended the day with 66,500 (83 big blinds) in chips.
