Event #15: $10,000 Heads-Up No-Limit Hold’em Championship at the ongoing World Series of Poker (WSOP) attracted a modest yet star-studded field of 112 runners. Some played four rounds of heads-up matches while others had to make it through five rounds. Four players entered the final day of play where Sean Swingruber (cover image) took down two consecutive heads-up matches to win his first gold bracelet and $186,356 in prize money.

After winning the championship match, Swingruber said, “It feels indescribable. I’m not a huge tournament player, mostly cash games primarily, but I’ve put a lot of work into heads-up recently. I’ve always eyed this tournament and thought I could have an edge versus other MTT players.”

The event paid out eight places and apart from the four semifinalists, Jimmy D’Ambrosio (5th for $31,151), Jake Schindler (6th for $31,151), Kristen Bicknell (7th for $31,151), and Matthias Eibinger (8th for $31,151), rounded out the ITM finishes.

Some notables who made it to the Round of 16 but couldn’t progress further were Brian Rast, Ole Schemion, Jan Lakota, Ricky Guan, Richard Tuhrim, John Smith, Zachary Clark, and Simon Burns.

Semifinals 1 – Keith Lehr vs. Ben Yu

Keith Lehr locked horns with Ben Yu in the first heads-up semifinals match yesterday that lasted 81 hands.

Yu took the early lead, but soon Lehr edged ahead. The chip lead exchanged numerous times before Lehr, who was constantly bleeding chips, gave the match away.

On the last hand of the match, Lehr open-shoved for 670,000 from the button holding and Yu called tabling . The board ran , and Yu grabbed the pot to make it to the championship match.

Semifinals 2 – Sean Swingruber vs. Cord Garcia

The other semi-finals took place between Sean Swingruber and Cord Garcia and was substantially shorter at 34 hands. All through the match Swingruber never once lost control of chip lead and easily cruised through to the championship match.

On the final hand, Swingruber limped with , and Garcia jammed holding . Swingruber tanked for over a minute before calling – eventually getting lucky by clipping a seven on the board that was enough to take him to the finals.

Championship Match – Sean Swingruber vs. Ben Yu.

The two finalists Sean Swingruber and Ben Yu came together for the championship match that was to decide the winner. Just like in the semifinals, Swingruber took on the early lead but then went on to lose a massive hand to become a 2:1 underdog. He slowly started rebuilding, but he was the short stack for the most part of the heads-up match.

After 80 hands, Swingruber finally got himself ahead, and there was no looking back after that. On the last hand of the match, he moved all-in on the button with , and Yu made an immediate call with pocket sixes. Swingruber hit a runner-runner flush on the rundown to win his career-first WSOP bracelet.
