Event #37: $800 No-Limit Hold ‘em Deepstack at the 50th annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) registered a massive field of 2,808 entries, and after an intense three-day run it is finally in the books! Topping the large field for a piece of WSOP glory and his first bracelet win was Henderson, Nevada resident Robert Mitchell (cover image). Mitchell is a familiar face at the WSOP and its Circuit stops but had only $176,077 in WSOP winnings coming into the event. He more than doubled that by taking down $297,537 for his win on Tuesday.

Team India had come out in good numbers at the event, and six of our challengers were among the 671 Day 1 survivors. Three of them made it in the money with Kunal Patni running the deepest with a 165th place finish for $1,778 (-₹1.23 Lakhs).

Nishant Sharma who had entered Day 2 leading the group of six Indians exited first in 349th place for $1,292 (-₹89,936), followed by Gokul Parvathaneni (304th for $1,422 -₹98,985).

The other three Indians – Paawan Bansal, Tarun Goyal, and Rajat Jain busted empty-handed.

Mitchell held a commanding chip lead with a monstrous stack of 33.52 Million at the start of the eight-handed final table. Mitchell’s closest competitor was Italy’s Marco Bognanni with 24.47 Million, and not surprisingly, it was the top two stacks that came up against each other in the heads-up play.

Mitchell, who says he plays poker for the freedom, the money and the love of the game felt a bracelet win was inevitable, “One-hundred percent I did. I knew I was going to have another shot at it. I’ve been playing poker for a long time and felt like it was long overdue. It’s awesome.”

He credits his victory run to his deep run in Event #17: $1,500 NLHE Shootout where he finished 17th ($5,279).

“That shootout helped me a lot. I was so close I tasted the bracelet. I kind of played a little too fast three-handed. Coming here I realized, I’m just going to take my time and just be in the moment and play my best game,” Mitchell said.

A total of 421 players earned at least $1,185 and notable scorers included Phil Ivey (64th for $3,700), Kelly Minkin (81st for $3,134), Ankush Mandavia (114th for $2,018), Manig Loeser (175th for $1,778), Kristen Bicknell (215th for $1,582), Phil Hellmuth (283rd for $1,422), Chris Moorman (290th for $1,422) and Elio Fox (398th for $1,185).

Day 2 play brought the field of 671 runners down to 26 players and it was a fast dash to the bracelet on Day 3 were Nick Jivkov (9th for $25,152), Joshua Boulton (10th for $19,601), Kevin Song (14th for $15,412) and start-of-day chip leader Hamiz Feiz (15th for $15,412), all busted shy of the eight-handed final table.

Final Table Recap

The first two casualties on the final table were Zachary Mullennix and former bracelet champion Benjamin Moon.

Kamel Mokhammad then ran his jack-ten into Robert Mitchell’s ace-queen to be knocked out in sixth place.

Benjamin Underwood was eliminated in fifth place at the hands of Marco Bognanni who held against the former’s . Underwood hit a king-high straight on the runout, but Bognanni busted him by flopping a full house. It was all over for Underwood on the river.

Not long after that, Francois Evard moved all in for his last 4.8 Million after Axel Halley’s raise by 1.2 Million. The action folded back to Halley who called, tabling his against Evard’s . An ace or queen on the board could have sent the pot Evard’s way, but with no help coming to his aid on the runout Evard moved to the rail in fourth place.

Axel Hallay was eliminated in third place after his failed to catch up to Mitchell’s .

Robert Mitchell was in a dominating position with a stack of 72.5 Million as against Bognanni’s 39.9 Million coming into the heads-up play. The chips exchanged hands, and Bognanni even managed to close the gap but was unable to close the deal. On the final hand of the tournament, Mitchell responded to Bognanni’s raise for 3 Million by announcing a three-bet from the big blind for 10 Million. Cornered, Bognanni four-bet moved all in for 53 Million, and Mitchell made an immediate call.

Mitchell’s rail was yelling in cheer even before the community cards were opened. The flop fell keeping Mithell ahead, and the turn and river affirmed Mitchell’s victory, and just like that, the 41-year-old snagged his first WSOP bracelet!
