In this daily feature, we will bring you the key highlights from the 50th World Series of Poker (WSOP) to keep you abreast with the ongoings at the ‘World’s Biggest Poker Festival.’

June 26 was another day of celebrations, especially for the Indian rail back home. Defying all odds, India’s only female bracelet winner Nikita Luther had stomped her way into the final table of the prestigious Zynga Poker WPT500 Las Vegas Main Event for an incredible second time in three years. Luther had started the day placed third in chips and played splendidly well to make it to heads-up with Ben Farrell. When she all but had the title in her grasp, a brutal bad beat for almost 90% of the chips in play took the game away from her. Forced to settle for a runner-up finish. Luther collected a personal best $109,300 (₹75.32 Lakhs) in prize money – the most won by an Indian female poker player in Las Vegas ever. The other Indian on the final table, Ritesh Shah, who had come in with the sixth-largest stack found himself on the shallow end of a cooler with his pocket tens losing to pocket kings. Shah was eliminated in eighth place for $17,000 (~₹11.71 Lakhs).

Coming back to the bracelet events, we had Team India continuing its onward march for the bracelet as another eight players made it through Day 1B in Event #61: $400 Colossus. Headlining this lot is Sriharsha Doddapaneni (54 BBs) with the others, namely, Young Gun Siddharth Karia (552,000), Shravan Chhabria (486,000), Vivek Rughani (417,000), Nishant Sharma (258,000), Atul Nagpal (195,000), Rohan Dhawan (155,000) and Aman Kejriwal (129,000). These combined with the three Indian qualifiers from Day 1A – Kunal Patni, PokerGuru Staking’s Madhav Gupta, and Jaswinder “Bobbe” Suri – make for a total of 11 Indian challengers who will be resuming play on Day 2.

The event is down to its final six players where leading the charge is Josh Arieh (6,220,000).

The WSOP is pulling out all stops to make its 50th annual series a memorable experience, and the latest in the slew of add-ons to the poker festival is the release of a list of “50 Greatest Poker Players’ in poker history. Pausing the series’ proceedings this Saturday, WSOP will be hosting a special program, ‘First 50 Honors Gala’ in honor of the most memorable moments and players at the WSOP.

Zynga Poker WPT500 Las Vegas – Day 3

Day 3 of the highly anticipated Zynga Poker WPT500 Las Vegas started with nine finalists that included the two Indians, Nikita Luther, and Ritesh Shah. Luther had final-tabled same event three years back finishing fifth and was eyeing nothing short of the title this time around. She played exceptionally, even eliminating two of her final table opponents to make her way to the heads-up with Ben Farrell. In what turned out to be a brutal bad beat, she lost a decisive hand to Farrell with her ace-king falling to the latter`s ace-queen, and there was no coming back after that. Luther finished runner-up for a personal best $109,300 (₹75.32 Lakhs) in prize money, while Farrell was crowned the champion and took home a paycheque of $155,000 (~₹1.06 Crores).
