In this daily feature, we will bring you the key highlights of the 50th World Series of Poker (WSOP) to keep you abreast with the ongoings at the ‘World’s Biggest Poker Festival.’

July 15 was a landmark day for Indian poker as Young Gun Abhinav Iyer finally accomplished the dream that the domestic poker community has been waiting for – Iyer claimed the solo WSOP gold bracelet in Event #84: The Closer – $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em for the biggest score posted by an Indian at any poker tournament in recent history – $565,346 (~₹3.87 Crores).

He had entered Day 2 with the 12th largest stack of 782,000 (49 big blinds) among 196 survivors. He displayed exceptional skills on the felts and expertly navigated the field to reach the nine-handed final table with the biggest stack of 15,875,000. Throughout the course of the final table, Iyer did not relinquish his chip lead and ultimate bested Sammy Lafleur heads-up to capture the title and the top prize.

A total of seven Indians had scored at the event.

The most prestigious event at the series, the $10K Main Event, is now down to three remaining finalists who will be advancing to the final day later tonight. Hossein Ensan (326,800,000 – 163 big blinds) has retained his chip lead for a third consecutive day and will be joined on Day 10 by Alex Livingston (120,400,000 – 60 big blinds) and Dario Sammartino (67,600,000 – 33 big blinds).

Alan Sternberg was the only other bracelet winner on July 15 as he shipped Event #85: $3,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 6-Handed for $448,392.

Event #84: The Closer – $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em – Day 2

Young Gun Abhinav Iyer demolished the competition on Day 2 of The Closer as he brought home India’s first-ever WSOP gold bracelet, along with a career-best score of $565,346 (~₹3.87 Crores). Iyer was in unstoppable mode on the felts as he eliminated several players, en route to claiming the title, with runner-up Sammy Lafleur becoming his final victim for the day.

Four other Indians posted scores in The Closer on Day 2, namely Siddharth Mundada (73rd for $5,956 – ₹4.08 Lakhs), Kalyan Chakravarthy (98th for $4,401 – ₹3.01 Lakhs), Himmat Singh (176th for $3,500 – ₹2.39 Lakhs) and Shashank Jain (239th for $3,500 – ₹2.39 Lakhs).

Event #73: $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em MAIN EVENT – World Championship – Day 9

Five finalists returned to the final table of the $10K Main event and following the eliminations of Garry Gates (4th for $3,000,000) and Kevin Maahs (5th for $2,200,000), the play was halted for the day.

Germany’s Hossein Ensan (326,800,000 – 163 big blinds) retained the end-of-day chip leader position for a third consecutive day, while Canada’s Alex Livingston (120,400,000 – 60 big blinds) and Italy’s Dario Sammartino (67,600,000 – 33 big blinds) grabbed the second and third spots on the final table leaderboard respectively.

Event #85: $3,000 Pot-Limit Omaha 6-Handed – Day 4

Day 4 began with the six finalists resuming play. Alan Sternberg was third in chips but orchestrated a dramatic rise to eventually square off with Evangelos Kokkalis heads-up. Defeating the latter, Sternberg captured his first-ever WSOP title along with $448,392.

Earlier on Day 2, PokerGuru Staking’s Vikram Kumar finished 50th for $6,392 (~₹4.38 Lakhs).

Event #86: $10,000 No-Limit Hold ‘em 6-Handed – Day 3

The final 16 players returned on Day 3 and one of the biggest turnarounds was of Gal Yilfrach who started his day as the shortest stack and has now bagged up as the chip leader amid the six remaining players! Yilfrach holds 5,385,000 and also in contention is Indian-origin player Anuj Agarwal (4,350,000).

Event #87: $3,000 Horse – Day 2

The day began with 127 survivors from the starting field of 301. Only 14 of them still remain in action and have bagged up for Day 3 that will see Konstantin Puchkov begin in pole position with a stack that has 938,000 chips.

Event #89: $5,000 No-Limit Hold ‘em Turbo – Day 1

The tournament attracted 608 entries and end of day, only 44 have advanced to Day 2. The only player with a million-plus stack is Liran Twito who leads the pack with 1,452,000.
