October is here and the month comes wrapped in festivities for the country that celebrates Navratris and Durga Puja before getting drowned in the dazzling lights of Diwali! The spirit of celebrations has spilled over the poker felts as well bringing with it loads of action. For now, let’s take a look back at the week that was.

The past seven days belonged to the virtual felts, and there has been a noticeable surge in online action, driven mostly by the high-value tournaments at PokerBaazi and Spartan Poker. Dominating the show was yet another smashing edition of the PokerBaazi Premier League (PPL). The series was making a return after April, and kicked off on September 21 with a massive ₹7 Crores in guaranteed prizes! Having taken charge of the spanking new PokerBaazi LIVE poker room onboard Casino Pride 2, PokerBaazi experimented with the exciting live-online hybrid format in the two biggest events at the PPL. Both the High Roller 6-Max ₹70 Lakhs GTD (RE) and the MoneyMaker ₹1 Crore GTD events played down to the final table last weekend and following a week-long pause will next resume play at the PokerBaazi LIVE poker room in Goa (Oct 7-8)! Immediately after that, the Baazi Poker Tour (BPT) will kickoff, and you will be able to follow all the action in near real-time on PokerGuru!

But before all that, there’s another Spartan Poker flagship coming your way. Tweaking its signature Millionaire tournament, Spartan Poker has come out with The Millionaire X5 Edition – a ₹8,000 buy-in multi-flight tourney with three starting flights that run from Oct 4-6 and guarantees 1 Million to the top five finishers.

As far as online performances are concerned, it was the super talented Aditya Sushant who overshadowed the rest this week. He was an unstoppable force on the virtual felts and championed two majors on Spartan Poker – The Elite ₹25 Lakhs GTD for ₹4.78 Lakhs and the “5 For 5” for ₹5 Lakhs. The WSOP bracelet winner made two runner-up finishes as well – in the 9stacks’ The Joker ₹15 Lakhs GTD for ₹2.47 Lakhs and PokerStars India’s Sunday PLO ₹2 Lakhs GTD for ₹57,341. His weekly report card has a litany of other scores, many of which we were unable to cover (we have a fix for this in the works), but with at least ₹13.40 Lakhs in online winnings, he is our “PokerGuru Star of the Week!”

If fast-paced online action brought in good news this week, there were several disturbing developments as well. Kolkata that is considered a safe haven for poker saw raids conducted by the police at two different poker rooms. 14 people including the owner of Kolkata’s popular Mughlai cuisine restaurant chain, Arsalan, Akhtar Parvez were apprehended in this raids and charged with gambling, in direct contravention to the provisos of the West Bengal Gambling and Prize Competition Act, 1957 and also the 2015 judgement of the Calcutta High Court and the recent ruling by Calcutta High Court`s Circuit Bench at Jalpaiguri.

Goa seems to be dominating our weekly recap and this week was significant for the coastal state’s offshore casinos since the government has initiated proceedings to identify a suitable location in Aguada Bay to move offshore casinos. The opposition Congress has vehemently opposed the idea, however, citing social and environmental concerns.

Two exciting developments this week should help the mind sport spread out to the masses. In the first, PokerStars India has signed on as associate sponsors for the immensely popular reality TV show Bigg Boss! The other features news of the return of Poker Sports League (PSL) that is coming back for Season 3 in a much bigger avatar. There are ₹4 Crores in prizes and league founder Amit Burman has committed $2 Million to the league this year!

Setting the international felts on the fire are two ongoing stops – the WSOP International Circuit at the King’s Casino in Rozvadov and the WPT UK which is currently underway at Nottingham and scheduled to run till October 6. Coming up next is the European Poker Tour (EPT) Open Sochi that runs from October 4 to 13.

Online Railbird Report

Headlining the online scorecard is one of our first batch of Young Guns who also happens to be the country`s first WSOP bracelet winner – Aditya Sushant. This Chennai-based superstar has been unstoppable and won two titles on Spartan Poker this week – the 5 For 5 for ₹5 Lakhs, in addition to winning The Elite ₹25 Lakhs GTD ₹11,000 (RE) for ₹4.78 Lakhs. Sushant who enjoys cult popularity in the domestic circuit netted hefty sums for his two runner-up finishes in 9stacks’ The Joker ₹15 Lakhs GTD for ₹2.47 Lakhs and PokerStars India’s Sunday PLO ₹2 Lakhs GTD for ₹57,341. This, along with a litany of other scores, saw him adding at least ₹13.40 Lakhs to his bankroll, making him our “PokerGuru Star of the Week!!”

Among the other top performers, Mayank ‘Maahi13’ won the PPL #24: The Endeavour ₹60 Lakhs GTD for ₹11.24 Lakhs and Jaydeep ‘JDBhaiya’ Dawer championed the PPL #34 The Summit MonsterStack ₹35 Lakhs GTD for ₹8.26 Lakhs.

The PPL buzz may have settled down for now with it is a temporary lull before the hail storm. The two most prominent events on the schedule – PPL #35 High Roller & The MoneyMaker ₹1 Crore GTD are to play out their final tables in Goa next week. Adding to the excitement is the fact that the first-ever BPT ₹25K Main Event champion Puneet ‘neo1’ Dua is chip leading the final table in PPL #35 High Roller with a massive 2.74 Million stack. Over at The MoneyMaker ₹1 Crores GTD, it is Young Gun Siddharth ‘schemer’ Karia sitting in pole position with a stack of 3.832 Million. Both final tables will now take place at the PokerBaazi LIVE poker room in Goa on October 7 and 8 respectively.

Just days after the unpleasant incident, came some uplifting news that evidently contradicts the case made out by the Kolkata Police in the story mentioned above. Hearing a petition filed by the Secretary of the Indian Poker Association (IPA) and long-time poker crusader, KN Suresh, the Calcutta High Court’s circuit branch in Jalpaiguri ruled that police and other law enforcement authorities cannot interfere or disrupt any poker games conducted by the club without a prior complaint or specific arrest warrant.
