The 2019 Triton Poker High Roller Series Jeju was off with a bang as the series opener, i.e., Event #1 HK$250,000 Short-Deck Ante-Only, pulled in a total of 65 entries, which included 28 re-entries, generating a prize pool of HK$15.275 million (US$1.95 million).

American superstar Justin Bonomo (cover image) has been in peak form since last year. Winning a plethora of titles last year, Bonomo picked up over US$25 Million in tournament cashes last year to take pole position in the All-Time Money List. His current total live earnings stand tall at US$44,626,823.

Having played in only his fourth-ever short-deck tournament, Bonomo destroyed the 65-strong entry field to claim the title and top prize of HK$4.6 million (US$586,000).

“I’m super happy to have won this obviously,” Bonomo said in his post-event interview. “A lot of people at the table had a lot of experience of short deck. For me, a lot of the spots were new, and I had to figure them out as I went along. Some decisions I just ended up guessing.”

He added, “It’s a lot of fun learning. I really like the dynamic puzzle aspect, just solving things on the fly. It’s stressful though. People are watching on the stream at home. My friends are watching. I just don’t want to make a huge mistake… It’s a fantastic start. I couldn’t be happier right now.”

With only the top eight players receiving payouts, the only player who finished in the money but bubbled the final table was another regular John Juanda (8th for HK$610,000).

In a significant change early in the ongoing the series, the second event at the stop that was set to be the HK$500K Short-Deck, Ante-Only Bounty event, was changed to a regular HK$500K Short Deck Ante-Only event with unlimited re-entries by the tournament organizers basis player feedback.
