The 50th annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) that is presently underway at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas may have the majority of the poker population captivated, but there is enough action to go around the other poker venues in the city as well.

One of the more popular non-bracelet events that played out recently was the 2019 partypoker MILLIONS Vegas $10,300 Main Event that was held at the ARIA Resort and Casino from June 28 to July 2. The event had an advertised prize pool guarantee of $5 Million and was the first live stop in the U.S to be sponsored by partypoker.

A player-field of 536 runners in the Main Event generated a prize pool of $5.36 Million, smashing the advertised guarantee, and at the end of it all, it was Tom Marchese (cover image) who took home the $1 Million top prize.

“The field was a real mix of amateur and pro players. When it was down to like the final three or four tables [yesterday] it’s crazy how many good players were left. It had the feeling more like a High Roller field,” said Marchese after the win.

Marchese was second in chips with 13 remaining when Day 3 ended. He did well to enter the final table as the chip leader but lost a sizeable portion of his stack. Marchese quickly recovered by eliminating the 2003 WSOP Main Event champion Chris Moneymaker in a lucky hand where he turned a two-outer to get back in contention. There was no looking back for Moneymaker after that as he maintained his chip lead all the way till the heads-up where he defeated Jeremy Ausmus to win the title!

“That was just super lucky for me. He [Moneymaker] just re-raised pre-flop and I was getting a good price all the way. Then I was super fortunate to hit the two outer.”

The first starting flight had attracted 222 players, and only 143 could advance. Day 1B saw 221 more joining the action, and 136 among them pushed ahead. Registrations were open till the start of Level 11 on Day 2 and another 93 late entries made for a total field of 536 runners and a $5,360,000 prize pool.

There were 83 players in the running after Day 2, with the money bubble looming as only the top 79 places were to be paid. As expected, the bubble closed in quickly on Day 3 with Joseph Kuether falling out in 80th place.

The star-studded field featured many notables who made in the payouts list like partypoker Team Pros Josip Sumunic (15th for $45,000) and Joao Simao (33rd for $30,000), Anton Wigg (34th for $30,000), two-time WSOP champion Norbert Szecsi (42nd for $30,000), former bracelet champion David Lambard (43rd for $30,000), and four-time bracelet winner Joe Cada (72nd for $20,000).

On the other hand, partypoker Chairman Mike Sexton, partypoker pros Mikita Badziakouski, Bertrand Grospellier, Kristen Bicknell, Anatoly Filatov & Ludovic Geilich, and Team Online ambassadors Jeff Gross and Patrick Tardif, fell out empty-handed.

Frank Stepuchin was the start of the day chip leader on Day 4 and put on quite the show by orchestrating the elimination of many players, all the while drinking beer. He eventually ran out of steam at 10th place ($60,000).

Final Table Recap

Early into the final table, former World Champion Chris Moneymaker was at the receiving end of a brutal beat as he was felted holding pocket kings by Tom Marchese’s pocket eights. Marchese hit a two-outer on the turn to eliminate Moneymaker in ninth place.

Pocket eights were responsible for the next elimination as well, with Tobias Duthweiler’s king-jack falling to Ana Marquez’ pocket eights in eighth place.

15 minutes later, it was Rainer Kempe making his way out in seventh place, after running his king-ten into Marchese’s ace-king.

As Marchese doubled up through Kempe, Marquez was the other player seen climbing.

As soon as the players came back from a break, Conor Beresford hit the rail in sixth place. Beresford went down in a cooler of a hand with his pocket tens run down by Jeremy Ausmus’ pocket jacks.

The pace of eliminations continued, and the next player to fall was Sergio Aido. He raised all in with ace-three only to find a caller in Marchese who held ace-queen. Marchese stayed ahead on the board sending Aido out in fifth place.

Soon, Freddy Deeb three-bet all in with ace-seven, and Marchese called it off with pocket nines. A seven on the flop saw Deeb improving to a pair, but Marchese had flopped a set and eliminated Deeb in fourth place.

A short three-way fight soon narrowed the field to heads-up after Ana Marquez crashed out in third place. Marquez had lost a good chunk of her stack to Ausmus and several hands later when she moved all-in for 2 Million from the small blind, it was Ausmus making the call from the big blind.

Marchese entered the heads-up play holding 31.2 Million in chips to Jeremy Ausmus’ 22.4 Million and soon took down a four-bet pot to widen the gap. Ausmus kept slipping and soon the final hand was dealt. The last hand of the tournament began with Marchese opening from the button for 1 Million, and Ausmus announced all-in for 14.4 Million. Marchese asked for a count and went deep into the tank before finally making the call.
