The King’s Casino in Rozvadov is today the busiest poker room in Europe with non-stop poker action. Taking center stage at the venue for the next one week will be the second edition of The Indian Poker Series (TIPS) that kicked off it`s Winter Edition on March 6. The series has quickly climbed up the popularity charts among Indian players, and the extensive outreach efforts by tournament co-founders Manish Goenka and Jaydeep Dawer seem to have paid off with over 100 players confirming their participation at the series this time around.

A number of Indians flew in early for the series with the majority expected to trickle in during the next few days. Team India seems to have made a habit of scoring at international events and among the early success stories from Prague was that of Abhishek Jaiswal.

Jaiswal took down one of the weekly tournaments at the venue, i.e., the King’s Special Tuesday for €2,088 (₹1,65,480) for his first live title. TIP co-founder Jaydeep Dawer (5th for €593 -₹46,997) and the in-form Ankit Kapoor (6th for €464 -₹36,773) also posted scores in the same event.

TIPS 2 kicked off yesterday with the TIPS & KENTA Welcome Event that featured a €115 (₹9,111) buy-in. The opening event attracted 122 unique players which along with 62 re-entries made for a total of 185 entries generating €19,000 (₹15,05,321) in prize money. The top 20 places were paid with a min-cash worth €247 (₹19,569).

Besting the field of 185 entries, Romania`s Ciprian Paunescu emerged victorious and pocketed €4,557 (₹3.61 Lakhs). Paunescu is a known regional player with close to $80,000 in live earnings. His best score to-date came in the 2017 888Live Easter Edition London (£440 NLHE -3rd for $18,742). In the finale, Paunescu defeated Israel’s Ezra Shekel heads-up to stake claim to his first TIPS title. The latter pocketed €3,107 for a runner-up finish.

India’s Himanshu Dewan was among the top contenders for the title, but he fell two places short of the finish line at third place. Dewan, who won his way to the series through an online qualifier on PokerBaazi made the most of his outing. Maintaining a dominant headstart, he cruised into the final table and held his place for the first few hours. However, his deep run came to an end in third place where he got unlucky with pocket queens against an opponent’s jack-queen in a preflop all-in showdown. Dewan pocketed €2,052 (₹1.62 Lakhs) for his efforts.

Team PokerGuru ambassador Ashish Ahuja, Young Gun Ujjwal Narwal and Vineet Kumar were also seen in action at the event but failed to post scores.

Bangladesh’s Navid Ahmed (14th for €304), Germany’s Christian Volk (17th for €276) and Heinz Erich (18th for €247) were among those returning with loaded wallets.

The elimination of Croatia’s Tadija Krivic (11th for €380) and ‘LABI’ (10th for €380) from Germany got the final table going.

Final Table Recap

Local player Frantisek Paum was the first elimination on the final table and departed in ninth place. Following him to the rail was Belgium’s ‘‘BUZAU 29’ and Romanian pro-Teodor Dragotescu, in eighth and seventh place respectively.

Aleksandar Trajkovski from Macedonia hit the rail in sixth place, narrowing the field down to the final five contenders.

Two German players, Daniel Gerhard and Marcel Westrich were then eliminated one after the other at fifth and fourth place respectively.

The lone Indian challenger on the final table, Himanshu Dewan then found his pocket queens cracked by his opponent’s jack-queen in a preflop all-in showdown.

Eventually, the heads-up between Ciprian Paunescu and Ezra Shekel saw Paunescu winning the title!
