In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker’ we bring to you the weekly round-up of the biggest online scores by Indian MTT players along with the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit.

Here are this week`s top stories

It’s been almost never-ending excitement at the 2018 World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas this past week that has already seen many popular and classic tournaments culminate. A huge number of Indians are in Vegas and more are reaching soon to pit their poker skills in a globally competitive field. At the top of the list of the Indian challengers is Aditya Agarwal who has sent ripples of excitement and anticipation across the Indian poker fraternity with his continued stellar performance in the $1,500 No-Limit Hold ‘em Monster Stack. Agarwal has reached Day 4 of the event where he will be combating with 28 other survivors for the gold bracelet. It’s going to be a defining moment for him and India as well, as Agarwal though short on chips is in the firing line to bring home his own maiden bracelet as well as India’s third!

Many other Indian players have been seen in action this week, and the long list includes names like Nipun Java, Paawan Bansal, Raghav Bansal, Nikita Luther, Muskan Sethi, Yudhishter Jaswal, Bobbe Suri, Nishant Sharma, Abhinav Iyer, Apoorva Goel, Vivek Rughani, Aditya ‘Bitti’ Agarwal, Naman Madan and Pranay Kapoor.

In domestic live poker action, two upcoming tournaments were announced this week – the Deltin Poker Tournament (DPT) to be held at the Deltin Royale Casino next month and the ‘Hysteria Live 2.0’ by MadOverPoker at Tilt Room. Bengaluru on June 30.

The paydays were colossal this week for the online poker community as well. Rubin “kornkid” Labroo, who is the “PokerGuru Star of the Week”, shipped the PPL ₹1 Crore GTD Main Event bagging ₹35.41 Lakhs. With the conclusion of the PokerBaazi Premier League (PPL), the leaderboard found a winner in none other than the defending champion Ramlakhan “Hitler” Meena, who made several spectacular runs to beat out Neeraj “SelfClaimedPro” Kumar for the top prize of ₹3 Lakhs.

In domestic news, Chief Minister of Goa Manohar Parrikar issued a 48-hour deadline for the eradication of the encroachments made by the Maharaja Casino, while 9Stacks revealed sending a 25-player Indian contingent to participate in the 2018 WSOP in Las Vegas.

In the international sphere, Jason Somerville entered into a partnership with PokerStars to promote poker on Twitch, Atlantic City will soon have two new casinos, Macau banned casino employees from gambling and the Thai police arrested 3,000 people on betting charges linked to the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The online felts were on fire this week as PokerBaazi’s PPL came to end crowing many winners who took home massive paydays. Topping them all was the “PokerGuru Star of the Week” Rubin “kornkid” Labroo who shipped the PPL ₹1 Crore GTD Main Event for a ginormous amount of ₹35.41 Lakhs.

WSOP 2018

Just as the World Series of Poker (WSOP) entered its fifth week, there have been remarkable performances by Indian poker stalwarts in the tournament series. Headlining Team India’s run at the 2018 WSOP is India’s top-ranking player and Team PokerStars Pro Aditya Agarwal who has galloped over a heavily competitive field to reach Day 4 of Event #48: $1,500 No-Limit Hold ‘em Monster Stack.

Agarwal, who has already cashed in four WSOP bracelet events this summer, is gunning for nothing less than the coveted gold bracelet and has bagged 1,680,000 in chips for Day 4 of the tournament where only 29 survivors remain!

Nipun Java was seen in action in the same event, and he ended his run on Day 3 in 126th place for $6,794 (~₹4.65 Lakhs), even as on Day 2, Apoorva Goel and 9stacks qualifier, Vivek Rughlani finished in 473rd and 436th place respectively to each pocket $3,605 (~₹2.45 Lakhs).

There were several other Indians who made their mark at WSOP and are still in play in different tournaments. Raghav Bansal (59,400) Nikita Luther (29,700) and Muskan Sethi (17,300) are playing in the Event #54: Big Blind Antes $3,000 NLHE while Aditya ‘Bitti’ Agarwal progressed to Day 2 in Event #53: $1,500 PLO Hi-Lo 8 Or Better.

Indian challenger Paawan Bansal made another deep run at the WSOP with a 73rd place finish in Event #51: $1,500 NLHE Bounty for $2,952 (~₹2.02 Lakhs).

Another high action and popular tournament, Event #45: Big Blind Antes $ 1,000 NLHE (30 Minute Levels) opened with a sizeable Indian participation. Aditya Agarwal and Nipun Java reached the money but were eliminated on Day 1. Agarwal ended his run in 246th placefor $1,501 (~₹1.01 Lakhs) while Java finished in 150th place ($1,851 – ~₹1.25 Lakhs). Mumbaikar Amit Jain who has been participating at WSOP since 2016 also fought well in the event to reach 117th place and collected $2,019 (~₹1.37 Lakhs) for his efforts.

This summer was also the first WSOP visit for Aditya ‘Bitti’ Agarwal, who entered Event #43: $2,500 NLHE and climbed up the field to progress to Day 2 where he finished 81st for $5,653. Meanwhile, Paawan Bansal continued forward to Day 3 eventually busting at 30th place for $12,345 (~₹8.47Lakhs).

Event #39: $1,500 NLHE Shootout saw two Indians, Raghav Bansal (55th) and Yudhishter Jaswal (77th) pocketing $,5,227 (₹3.54 Lakhs) each.

With several WSOP events reaching their finale, and a big number of qualifiers from 9stacks #LFGVegas promotion set to reach Vegas soon, the coming week is going to see a lot more Indian action at WSOP!

This week’s winners include Farhintaj Bonyadi, Yaniv Birman, Robert Peacock, Eric Baldwin, Preston Lee, Scott Bohlman, Robert Nehorayan, Matthew Mendez, Shaun Deeb, Mario Prats Garcia, Nicholas Seiken, Timur Margolin, David Brookshire, Loren Klein and Jay Kwon.
