Here are this week`s top stories

Another glorious week in the world of poker comes to a close. As the 49th annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) rages on, we were made privy to many daring gameplays, intense challenges, premature celebrations and nerve-wracking finales. Playing host to this extensive series, the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, has seen a flurry of activities in the last few weeks. Having only reached the halfway mark, the best is certainly yet to come!

Members of Team India have not held back their bravado and have pushed through a plethora of participants to announce themselves on the grand platform of the WSOP. Taking flight from the spectacular runs made by Paawan Bansal, Raghav Bansal, Nipun Java and Aditya Agarwal in the previous weeks, more Indian challengers joined the tournaments this week to try and bring home the coveted WSOP bracelet.

Paawan Bansal persisted with his form in Event #34: $1,000 DOUBLE STACK where he finished 74th place for $6,803 (~₹4.63 Lakhs). He was accompanied in the event by Nipun Java who also reached Day 2 and was eliminated in 87th place for $5,752 (~₹3.91 Lakhs).

Agarwal ran deep in the Event #37: $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em, to make it to Day 2, but he could not maintain his momentum and eventually placed 45th for $6,482 (~₹4.41 Lakhs). Meanwhile, Raghav Bansal and Yudhishter Jaswal are still going strong in Event #39: $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em Shootout.

The live tournament action will be making a return to Goa next month as the last edition of 2018 Deltin Poker Tournament – Summer Edition for this year was announced from July 26 – 29. The complete schedule is expected to be announced soon.

In other major headlines, the gaming industry was in for a shock this week as the state government of Sikkim announced a possible ban on the locals from entering online betting shops and gaming parlours. The bad news continued as the Indian Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) expressed concern towards a fake lottery tickets scam in Kerala.

In another exciting live tournament, PokerStars and Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) announced that the nine-day long 2018 APPT Manila will begin from August 4.

On the online poker front, Shravan ‘FishStars’ Chhabria took charge and shipped the PokerBaazi ‘PPL#9 The Endeavour ₹25 Lakhs GTD (Re-Entry)’ to become the “PokerGuru Star of the Week”. With the ongoing PokerBaazi Premier League (PPL) progressing at a brisk pace, we will be keeping an eye out for more thrilling action to come!

In other news coming in this past week, New Jersey finally legalized sports betting on June 14 while Michigan is making its way towards sports gambling legalization. Daniel Negreanu meanwhile joined Masterclass where he will be teaching courses.
