In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker’ we bring to you the weekly round-up of the biggest online scores by Indian MTT players along with the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit.

Here are this week`s top stories

As the grand finale of the 2018 World Series of Poker (WSOP) approaches, Team India’s dashing performance at the series has caused quite an upheaval! Even though 9stacks qualifiers Nishant Sharma and Vivek Rughani’s elimination from Event #65: $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em MAIN EVENT – World Championship on Day 6 have ended India’s dreams of winning the world championship title, but the contingent’s persistent runs in the parallel events has kept alive the hopes for another bracelet win.

Nonetheless, Sharma had a breakout run and has became the only Indian to make it to top 50 in the WSOP Main Event eventually finishing 34th for a career best score of $230,475 (~₹1.58 Crores). Undoubtedly, Sharma is our “PokerGuru Star of the Week.”

With Aditya Sushant (1,341,000) and Sanjay Taneja (203,000) going strong in Event #68: The Little One for One Drop – $1,000 +111 No-Limit Hold’em, Team India may well be able to bring back its fourth bracelet!

While the battle is still raging on the live felts of the ongoing WSOP, the action has also intensified on the online poker scene as Nadeem ‘Downtownplaya’ Basha, taking advantage of the huge overlays offered by online poker giant PokerStars India, crushed the Sunday Special ₹25 Lakhs GTD, pocketing an incredible payday of ₹4.07 Lakhs.

Bringing positive vibes for the Indian gaming industry was news of the Law Commission of India (LCI) tabling before the Union government, recommendations to legalize sports betting and gambling in India to check the illegal dens of gambling and money laundering.

The second episode of LungiTV WSOP Vlogs released, with Vikram ‘Lungi’ Kumar bringing exclusive bytes with Indian poker celebrities Aditya ‘Intervention’ Agarwal and Nikita Luther and hot WSOP action from Vegas.

A lot happened on the international front this week starting with Spanish poker pro Ana Marquez joining 888poker as its latest brand ambassador and 14-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth joining Decent.bet as its brand ambassador.

Italy’s new coalition government moved a ‘Dignity Decree’ proposal to ban all gambling-related advertising, Hong-Kong based gaming firm Success Dragon International saw a changeover in top management even as IPI moved to add manpower for completing its ambitious Saipan based Imperial Pacific Resort project and Paraguay moved towards establishing gaming monopoly by awarding a five year monopoly contract to Daruma Sam S.A’s brand, Apostala.la.

In his latest blog, poker player from Ukraine, Eugene Katchalov discussed his career in poker and his decision to transition to eSports.

As the WSOP is into its last week, the action will move closer to home base as the Asian Poker Tour (APT) Vietnam Ho Chi Minh Championships 2018 kicks off on July 11 followed by the 2018 Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) Manila beginning from August 4.

We wrap up this week’s recap with tournament reports from the WSOP 2018, Venetian DCPS and the MPNPT Sunny Beach Main Event championship.

WSOP 2018

What a momentous week it has been for the Indian poker fraternity! Whether at home or spread all across the globe, Indians everywhere are in awe of the unparalleled grit and determination showed by Team India’s challengers at the WSOP. As the $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em MAIN EVENT – World Championship rolled into Day 6, 9stacks qualifier Nishant Sharma gave the remaining 109 runners a run for their money!

Though a newcomer to the WSOP, Sharma has not let his inexperience in the tournament series affect his game or waver his confidence. Beginning his WSOP journey by finishing 365th in Event #34: $1,000 DOUBLE STACK No-Limit Hold’em for $2,508 (~₹1.70 Lakhs), he next moved on to the Main Event. And what a move that has been! Entering the tournament on Day 1C, Sharma’s chip count kept growing as the tournament progressed. He finished Day 4 with 1,172,000 in the bag and increased that count to a whopping 5,800,000 by the end of Day 5. He was one of the only two Indians featuring in Day 6, from the 22-player contingent that had started the tournament, and at one point in the day had built up a staggering stack of 15 Million. But Sharma’s extraordinary run sadly ended at the hands of Aram Zobian and he finished 34th for $230,475 (~₹1.58 Crores), which is the best run made by an Indian at the WSOP Main Event thus far.

The second Indian who made it to Day 6 of the Main Event was yet another 9stacks qualifier Vivek Rughani. The 29-year-old player from Ahmedabad burst onto the WSOP scene with deep runs in Event #48: $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em MONSTER STACK (436th for $3,605 – ~₹2.48 Lakhs) and Event #62: $888 Crazy Eights No-Limit Hold’em 8-Handed – $888,888 Guaranteed 1st Place (171st for $5,203 – ~₹3.58 Lakhs). He too entered the Main Event on Day 1C, but his stack fluctuated over the course of the next 5 days. However, he ended Day 5 with a chip count of 1,545,000, but his daring run could not extend beyond Day 6 as he finished 88th for $77,695 (~₹53.47 Lakhs).

One more fresh face that took the WSOP Main Event by storm was Kartik Ved. His run throughout the tournament was rather histrionic as he was considerably short-stacked for most of the event. Nevertheless, not only did he manage to make it till Day 5, he also picked up his WSOP maiden score that too worth a cool $57,010 (~₹39.20 Lakhs) by finishing 128th.

Six other Indians also made deep runs in the Main Event including Jaideep Sajwan (589th for $23,940 – ~₹16.44 Lakhs), Aditya Agarwal (717th for $19,900 – ~₹13.66 Lakhs), Rohan Bhasin (731st for $19,900 – ~₹13.66 Lakhs), Yudhister Jaswal (977th for $15,920 – ~₹10.93 Lakhs), Sriharsha Doddapaneni (1057th for $15,920 – ~₹10.93 Lakhs) and Apoorva Goel (1148th for $15,000 – ~₹10.30 Lakhs).

Many Indian challengers were seen in action at the tournaments running together with the Main Event. Event #66: $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em featured Raghav Bansal (121st for $2,658 – ~₹1.82 Lakhs) and Aditya Sushant (161st for $2,343 – ~₹1.61 Lakhs). Nipun Java was seen in action in Event #67: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Bounty (86th for $1,566 – ~₹1.07 Lakhs) and Event #68: The Little One for One Drop – $1,000 +111 No-Limit Hold’em (172nd for $3,187 – ~₹2.19 Lakhs).
