In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker’ we bring you the weekly roundup of the biggest online scores by Indian MTT players along with the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit.

Here are this week’s top stories

With the 50th annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) now on its home stretch, all the attention has been bestowed upon the Main Event that is now days away from crowning a new world champion. Commencing on July 3, the Main Event is on the cusp on beginning Day 5 with 354 runners still in contention for the grand prize of $10 Million (₹68.68 Crores) and the coveted gold bracelet. Among those gunning for the gold are a trio of Indians, PokerGuru Ambassador Kartik Ved (2,243,000 – 93 big blinds), Yudhishter Jaswal (1,333,000 – 56 big blinds) and Akshay Nasa (670,000 – 28 big blinds)!

A total of 10 Indians had entered Day 4 of the Main Event, and while the above mentioned three players have advanced to Day 5, the remaining seven finished in the money. Ankit Ahuja (822nd for $18,535 – ₹12.70 Lakhs), PokerStars India Team pro Aditya Agarwal (844th for $18,535 – ₹12.70 Lakhs) and Ashish Kasaraneni (864th for $18,535 – ₹12.70 Lakhs) brought in the top Indian scores this week making our job of choosing the “PokerGuru Star of the Week” a tough task, but the title goes to Ankit Ahuja for his better finish.

Two other bracelet events have Indians in them running deep. Rahul Byrraju (937,000 – 59 big blinds) bagged the largest stack among six Indians heading to Day 2 in the $1,111 Little One for One Drop, while former bracelet winner Aditya Sushant (215,300 – 134 big blinds) secured the 25th biggest stack at the end of Day 1 in the $1.5K PLO Bounty.

This summer was full of success stories of Team India scoring big in the various non-bracelet events in Las Vegas and this past week was no different. The Founder and CEO of PokerBaazi – Navkiran Singh, skipped the WSOP Main Event and instead took part in Event #88: $400 PLO Bounty $30K GTD at the Venetian DeepStack Championship. It turned out to be a wise decision as Singh went ahead and outlasted the 183-strong entry field in the event to take home a career-best $11,517 (~₹7.88 Lakhs) in prize money.

WSOP may have the poker media working overtime, but closer to home, there is the Asian Poker Tour (APT) Vietnam that is attracting its fair share of action at the Pro Poker Club in Ho Chi Minh city. While the majority of the Indian talent is busy in Las Vegas, a smaller group of Indians have made it across to Vietnam and done reasonably well by raking in a total of six scores already. Manish Lakhotia is hands down the star performer at least from the Indian lot with two scores at the series that includes the title of the NLHE Single-Day side event that he won for VND 166,510,000 (~₹4.89 Lakhs). Manoj Pentakota is the other standout performer for his 12th place finish in the VND 8 Billion GTD Main Event worth VND 136,860,000 (~₹4.05 Lakhs).

Headlining the virtual scorecard is Vidwath ‘Qweasdzxc’ Shetty, who took down PokerBaazi’s signature weekly tournament, the Baazi Super Sunday (BSS) SuperStack ₹25 Lakhs GTD for ₹4.85 Lakhs. PokerGuru Ambassador Vivek Mystic Peaks Singh was another big winner for taking down PokerStars India’s Sunday Special – Progressive KO ₹15 Lakhs GTD for ₹3.13 Lakhs.

In other news, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy has the entire gaming industry on the edge of their seats after announcing that the state government is looking to introduce legislation to ban online rummy.

On a more positive note, PokerBaazi announced the addition of Vikram Kumar, Rohan Dhawan and Nikhil Jain to the management team of the PokerBaazi LIVE Poker Room in Goa.

Online Railbird Report
