In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker’ we bring you the weekly roundup of the biggest online scores by Indian MTT players along with the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit.

Here are this week’s top stories

Now that we are halfway through the year and the biggest poker festival of 2019 is also in the books, it is time now to look forward to exciting poker action closer to home. While the fifth and last edition of the Deltin Poker Tournament series this year, the DPT July edition (July 31 to August 5), is mere days away from kick-off, the live poker scene in Goa seems to be heading towards a resurgence with prominent poker series, India Poker Championship (IPC), also announcing its comeback yesterday. But first, let’s take a quick look back at the week that just passed us by.

The big guns came out to play on the virtual felts this past week. PokerStars India Team pro Aditya Agarwal proved why he is a stalwart in the domestic circuit by taking down the Sunday Special – Progressive KO ₹15 Lakhs GTD on a platform that he endorses. He triumphed over seasoned pro Sumit mrgr33n33 Sapra in the heads-up, adding ₹3.05 Lakhs to his illustrious scorecard. Rohit ‘Kudos0505’ Behal was the other big winner who championed the 532 entry-field in PokerBaazi’s Baazi Super Sunday (BSS) SuperStack ₹25 Lakhs GTD, collecting ₹5.16 Lakhs in the process. For his win, Behal is our “PokerGuru Star of the Week.”

Upcoming online poker site, UMA Poker is presently running its UMA Series of Poker (USOP). The MTT-series commenced on July 17 last week and will continue all the way through this weekend. Some of the early winners in the series were Kavish ‘Tharakaram’ Sahni (USOP Kickoff for ₹2.52 Lakhs), Ankit ImluckBox Bajaj (USOP Bankroll Maker for ₹80,000) and Arav ‘Badluck’ Singh (USOP Cooler for ₹2.32 Lakhs).

There were several announcements and business deals emanating from the gaming industry this past week. Mobile games publisher Nazara Technologies continued its expansion spree by investing in Absolute Sports Pvt. Ltd. and purchasing shares worth ₹36 Crores in its subsidiary, Sportskeeda. Additionally, Esports and real-money gaming platform WinZO revealed plans of investing ₹10 Crores in local Indian game developers as well as partnering with them to develop quality content.

In other news, the uncertainty surrounding the fate of Goa’s casino industry continues as Chief Minister Pramod Sawant stated that the casino policy and Gaming Commission are still being reviewed.

On the international spectrum, the Aussie Millions announced its schedule for 2019, and while that is quite some time to come, Indian poker audiences have quite a lot to look forward to. Starting with the Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) Manila which will run from July 26 to August 4. There is likely going to be only a small group of Indians in attendance at the series given the coinciding dates of the stop with the DPT series. Aditya Wadhwani, Jaideep Sajwan, Anant Purohit, Bobbe Suri, and Neelansh Khurana have all won packages to the APPT Manila Main Event on PokerStars India and will likely be in attendance. Running along the same time as the APPT Manila will be DPT July edition that will be hosted onboard Casino Deltin Royale from July 31 to August 5. The Triton Poker Super High Roller Series London (July 31- August 8) will round out the poker action for the next few weeks.

Another exciting announcement to come through this week was the revival of the IPC. A once quite popular domestic poker series, the IPC had been on a hiatus since 2016. The series will now be making a comeback onboard Casino Big Daddy and is slated to run from September 11 to 15.
