In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker’ we bring to you the weekly round up of the biggest online scores by Indian MTT players along with the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit.

It’s a new year and things have certainly taken a positive spin for Indian poker players as the week had something on offer for everyone. The year began promising exciting action and this past week delivered just the same.

The Indian brigade certainly had a great start as Adda52 Team pro Kunal Patni narrowly missed clinching his first WPTDeepStacks trophy as he finished runner-up in the WPTDeepStacks Berlin Main Event making his career best score of $115,368 (~₹73.21 lakhs).

With the holiday season behind us, poker action has picked up steam. In the west, the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure 2018 took off. Set in the sunny Bahamas, PCA is one of the largest annual tournaments that all live pros look forward to and till now the series has crowned three big winners. The $100K Super High Roller event was taken down by USA’s Cary Katz for $1.49 million. Steve O’Dwyer won the $50,000 High Roller event for $769,500 while Maria Konnikova took down the $1,650 PCA National for $84,600. Team India’s Aditya Kumar and Vaibhav Sharma are in attendance at the series with Kumar playing one of the starting flights of the headline Main Event. However, he couldn’t get anything going and posted about his elimination on social media.

Live tournament players have much to look forward too with three tournament series set to get underway soon namely WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open (January 16 – February 2), Aussie Millions 2018 (January 17 – February 5) and Asian Poker Tour (APT) Vietnam (January 19 – 28).

Online, the action was no less hectic, with several notable scores, though huge figures eluded our players. Haresh ‘narcoss’ Kukreja is our “PokerGuru Star of the Week” with his highest score of ₹6 lakhs for shipping the Adda52 Millions last Sunday.

Online festivities promise to escalate further with the start of the brand-new Go Crazy promotion on Adda52.com that kicks off on January 11 with over ₹6 crores in prizes and Khelo365’s new weekly cash game leaderboard race.

Meanwhile, after 2017 got over, it was time for high stakes scores to be tallied and it was “BERRI SWEET” who recorded a profit of $1,769,395 at the PokerStars high-stakes cash tables making him the biggest cash game winner last year.

Another good news trickled in from Poker Sports League (PSL) that has inked a deal with Discovery Communications India’s sports channel DSports for exclusive broadcast rights for Season 2 of the league.

Besides the above, in this report, we bring you news of renowned pros Jason Mercier and Felipe Ramos bidding farewell to PokerStars, Silver Heritage Group starting casino operations in Nepal’s Tiger Palace Resort, Spanish regulator opening new license application window, 888poker entering the regulated Italian market and Ohio becoming the 18th US state to legalize daily fantasy sports betting.

This past Sunday grind turned out to be great for the Indian MTT community with several notable scores made by our challengers on both domestic and international sites. Adda52 Announces Go Crazy Promotion With Over 6 Crores in Prizes

On January 3, UK-listed online gambling operator 888 Holdings launched its 888poker client in the regulated Italian market and now offers poker along with its tailored casino and sports betting clients. The 888poker.it client and website was launched with the full range of poker variants along with two recreational formats namely Snap Poker and Poker Blast.

PSL Inks TV Broadcast Deal With DSport Channel

In a major development for taking poker mainstream, Amit Burman, Anuj Gupta and Pranav Bagai backed Poker Sports League (PSL) signed a deal with Discovery Communications India’s sports channel DSport which now has acquired the exclusive rights to broadcast Season two of the league. This will be the first time that an Indian ‘sports’ channel will air the mind sport of poker’s action on television.

Goa Department of Commercial Tax Clarify Casino Transactions Are Liable For GST

Recently, the Commercial Tax Department in Goa clarified that all casino transactions were liable for Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the commissioner of state GST and commercial taxes, Deepak Bandeka clarified that Goa casinos have paid ₹40.11 crore in SGST in six months (July, 2017 –December, 2017).

WPTDeepStacks Berlin

It was grand New Year celebration for Adda52 Team Pro Kunal Patni who made his career best score when he narrowly missed clinching his first WPTDeepStacks trophy at WPTDeepStacks Berlin Main Event. Patni displayed a splendid performance and finished runners-up in the headline €1,500 Main Event at the World Poker Tour (WPT) DeepStacks Berlin to collect a cool $115,368 (~₹73,21,310) in prize money.

The event attracted a strong field of 561 runners with the top 71 finishers sharing the $881,555 prize pool and German’s Dustin Mangold emerged victorious banking $161,770.

PCA 2018

The PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) returned this week at the luxurious Atlantis Paradise Island Resort in the Bahamas and is slated to run till January 14.

The first major tournament on the lineup – $100K Super High Roller drew 48 runners and played out three days of intense poker before a winner emerged in USA’s self-proclaimed recreational player Cary Katz who banked the $1,492,340 top prize.

Jason Mercier & Felipe Ramos Bid Farewell To PokerStars

After Vanessa Selbst, two other poker superstars recently announced their departure from the PokerStars pro team. We are talking about 5-time WSOP bracelet winner Jason Mercier and South America’s number #1 ranked player Felipe Ramos. Mercier announced the news via a blog post where he clarified that he hasn’t retired from poker and wants to devote more time to his 3-month-old son and family duties while Ramos couldn’t reach a new agreement with PokerStars resulting in his departure.

Silver Heritage Group Starts Casino Operations in Nepal’s Tiger Palace Resort

On December 28, Hong Kong based Australian stock exchange listed Silver Heritage Group announced the official launch of its long pending casino operations at the Tiger Palace integrated resort in a regulatory filing to the stock exchange. The company announced that the casino is fully operational and hosted its first major event on New Year’s Eve.

Spanish Regulator Opens New License Application Window

Spanish regulator Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ) recently announced that a new window for applying for individual licenses to operate online gambling has opened up. This is the third window for license application since 2011 and it is expected that ten new operators (currently 52) will apply for a license.

Ohio Becomes 18th USA State to Legalize Fantasy Sports Betting

In a monumental step, USA’s Ohio state Governor John Kasich signed the House Bill 132 legalizing paid-entry daily fantasy sports. Ohio hence becomes the 18th state in the country (and third-largest) to enact a DFS law.

New Czech Republic License Regime Forces William Hill To Exit

Czech Republic’s new licensing regime came into effect on January 1 which forced UK online bookmaker William Hill to announce its exit from the country’s gambling market. William Hill did not indicate whether it would be applying for an official license in the future.

Online Gambling Ban Comes Into Effect in Uruguay

On January 1, Uruguay’s previously approved ban on online casino and poker services within its borders officially became effective. A new tax regime, which imposes additional tax on turnover of local land-based gambling venues, was also enforced. The ban also prohibits international sponsorship deals between licensed gambling operators and local sports clubs.

Unibet Removes High-Stakes Cash Game Tables

This past week, online poker site Unibet decided to remove its high stakes cash tables i.e. NL800 and PL800 from its poker client in an effort to protect the ecology of the site. Unibet also announced a new high stakes race promotion named Winter Bootcamp with €40,000 in prizes.

Jorden Verbraeken Wins German Poker Tour Main Event

Belgium’s Jorden Verbraeken took down the German Poker Tour €270 Main Event hosted at the Kings Casino in Rozvadov and banked €34,718 following a four-way deal. The event drew a massive field of 1,048 runners (including 183 re-entries) to create the prize pool worth €268,812.
