In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker’ we bring to you the weekly round up of the biggest online scores by Indian MTT players along with the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit.

After a great start to 2018, the third week of January seems to continue delivering on the promise of an action-packed year with several big announcements and developments.

Headlining the news this past week was India’s most trusted poker site – PokerBaazi that signed India’s boxing sensation Vijender Singh as its latest brand ambassador. In another pro sign-up, this one international, Isaac Haxton joined partypoker.

In other major news, India`s honorable President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the “First Ladies” award to Muskan Sethi on January 20.

It was a busy week in more ways than one with an array of live tournaments running all through the week. The Aussie Millions 2018 continues to hold sway, with the who’s who of the poker world participating. Not to be left behind, our very own poker warriors namely Nipun Java, Paawan Bansal and Nikita Luther are in attendance.

The next few weeks are looking equally exciting with many major series kicking off namely WSOP International Circuit – Marrakech (Jan 19 – Jan 28), PokerStars Festival London (January 22 – 28), Macau Poker Cup 28 (January 26 – February 11), 2018 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (January 28 – February 4) and Venetian DeepStack Extravaganza in Las Vegas (January 29 – February 25). We will keep you updated on all the aforementioned events particularly Macau Poker Cup (MPC) 28, where a large Indian contingent is expected to be in attendance.

Moving over to the virtual felts, action was equally palpable with the 888poker XL Blizzard taking the prime spotlight. The week saw numerous big scores from both domestic and international sites and it is Raghav ‘Rossoneri23’ Bansal who tops the charts this week for his cumulative score of almost $12,500 on PokerStars. For this, he is our “PokerGuru Star of the Week”.

The weekly recap also brings the news of Delta Corp shares hitting an all-time high and reports suggesting that Goa casinos may generate $1 billion in annual gross revenue.

Indian players dived into the online fray both on domestic and international websites yet again, with many scores made. The name that stands out is of one of the most talented and respected MTT pro`s in the country. We are talking about, Raghav ‘Rossoneri23’ Bansal who won $12,474.96 in cumulative scores for the two notable scores he made this past week. First, Bansal won $9,239.71 for 2nd place in the PokerStars ‘No Limit Hold’em’ and went on to cash a further $3,235.25 for 22nd place in the PokerStars ‘$215 Sunday Million, $1,000,000 GTD’. For this, Bansal takes our “PokerGuru Star of the Week” title.

PokerBaazi Ropes In India’s Boxing Sensation Vijender Singh As Brand Ambassador

India’s most trusted poker site signed Olympic medal and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award winner Vijender Singh as its new brand ambassador. Singh will represent and promote the brand and the sport by being the face of PokerBaazi on digital platforms and will also appear at PokerBaazi’s live events. Prior to Singh, Bollywood actor Sunny Leone was the celebrity brand ambassador of the site.

This past week, operator of the year award winner – partypoker announced the addition of one of the world’s most respected poker players, Isaac Haxton to its strong rooster of team pros. The former PokerStars pro boasts of almost $16 million in live cashes and is currently placed 21st on Hendon Mob’s all-time money list.

Delta Corp Shares Hit All-Time High

India’s largest gaming company and the only BSE listed company Delta Corp’s stock price hit a new record high of ₹338.90 this past week after the casino operator reported a whopping 319.1% (year-on-year) rise in its third quarter (December 2017). The company recorded a net profit at ₹44.70 crore as compared to the ₹10.7 crore in the third quarter of 2016.

Goa Casinos Could Generate $1 Billion in Annual Gross Revenue

A Las Vegas-headquartered investment advisory firm named Union Gaming Securities Asia Ltd recently stated that they believe Goa casinos are poised for substantial growth in terms of Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) if the state government permits the riverboats to come ashore. The analyst said that they expect Goa to be $1 billion market soon which will still be a fraction of India’s total GGR potential of $10 – $17 billion.

West Virginia Reintroduces Online Gambling Bill

A group of five Democrat state lawmakers reintroduced a bill that would legalize online gambling in West Virginia. The bill would authorize licensed casinos in the state of West Virginia to offer online gambling to gamblers who are of 21 years of age and above.

Aussie Millions 2018

The popular Aussie Millions returned to the Crown Casino in Melbourne this past week. The 26-event series commenced on January 17 and will conclude on February 4 after crowning its Main Event champion. Representing India at the series are WSOP bracelet winner Nipun Java, Paawan Bansal and Nikita Luther.

The A$1,150 Opening Event of the series drew a huge field of 1,538 players over four starting flights to create a A$1,576,450 prize pool. Taking home the biggest piece of the prize money was Austria’s Benedikt Eberle who outlasted the field to pocket the A$315,295 top prize and the title.

Two-time WSOP bracelet winner Nipun Java final tabled Event #4: Pot Limit Omaha and finished fifth for A$17,000 (~₹8,64,250).

Seminole Hard Rock Lucky Hearts Poker Open (SHRPO)

The poker world converged at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida this past week for the 2018 Seminole Hard Rock Lucky Hearts Poker Open.

The $50,000 Super High Roller surpassed its $1,000,000 Guarantee with 25 entries to create a prize pool worth $1,232,500. The event was eventually taken down by Stefan Schillhabel for $493,000.

Scott Baumstein Wins WPTDeepStacks Hollywood Main Event

Scott Baumstein topped the 1,366 entry field of the Season 5 WPTDeepStacks Hollywood Main Event taking down his first WPTDeepStacks title and $223,238 in prize money, which also included a $3,000 WPTDeepStacks Championship prize package.

APT Kickoff Vietnam 2018

Action was equally sizzling in the eastern hemisphere as the APT Kickoff Vietnam 2018 kicked off on January 19 at the Pro Poker Club in Ho Chi Minh.

The series has crowned four side winners till date and the Main Event is down to 321 survivors from a total of 603 entrants (138 entries on Day 1A + 179 entries on Day 1B + 286 entries on Day 1C) who will resume the grind on Day 2.

In side events, the Main Event Warm Up attracted a total of 167 entrants and a winner emerged in Japan’s Sano Mitsuru who pocketed the VND 239,930,000 (~$10,556) first place prize. Three more side events were crowned this week in Aivaras Bardaukas, Jimmy Diep and Yu Dang.

Hafiz Khan Wins WSOP Circuit Thunder Valley Main Event

The $1,675 WSOP Circuit Thunder Valley Main Event attracted 599 runners across two starting flights and outlasting them all was California-based Hafiz Khan who banked $188,686 in prize money, a shiny new ring and a seat into the 2018 Global Casino Championship.
