In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker,’ we bring you the weekly roundup of the most significant online scores by Indian MTT players along with the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit.

Here are this week’s top stories!

After an action-packed start to the year that saw two back-to-back live stops playing out in Goa, it’s the virtual felts that are blowing up at the moment. Yes, we are referring to the immensely popular India Online Poker Championship (IOPC). The 99-event series has already smashed records across the board, but it’s the Millionaire fever that has taken the poker community by storm. So it goes without guessing that the biggest story this past week was The Millionaire Legends ₹2 Crores GTD. The event attracted 980 entries over three starting flights where Bhavnagar-native Dhruvin’ thepokerplayer’ Kothari came out on top to became the latest Millionaire champion. He collected a sizeable ₹36.77 Lakhs following a five-way deal on the final table. Another 69th place finish for ₹49,000 saw Kothari earn a cumulative ₹37.26 Lakhs in the event, making him our “PokerGuru Star of the Week.”

The tournament also made millionaires out of Abhineet’ bankelal13’ Jain (runner-up for ₹34.06 Lakhs), Young Gun Arsh ‘BigggTymeR’ Grover (3rd for ₹27.94 Lakhs), bracelet winner Nikita’ Pterodactyl’ Luther (4th for ₹24.13 Lakhs) and Anant’ Pro’ Purohit (5th for ₹18.44 Lakhs).

It’s not only the massive prize money at the IOPC that has the regs excited but also the attractive Leaderboard prizes that promise a brand new MG Hector car to the winner. The series closes out on February 9 when alongside other events, The Millionaire Main Event ₹3 Crores GTD will crown a champion. The Main Event in chugging along in full speed having logged in 950 entries in the first two starting flights alone. Six more starting flights are coming up, so it’s safe to say that the event is well on track to set a new attendance record.

The week was not all about the MTT’s as some attractive cash game promos were running along the side as well. PokerBaazi is running its 4-Card PLO Cash Drive (February 5 – March 5), while Poker Dangal has come out with an all-new cash game promotion (February 4 – 24) offering tons of giveaways along with free packages to Las Vegas!

There is more good news, as, after a short break, we finally have a live stop with Indians in the limelight. Season 3 of The Indian Poker Series (TIPS) is well underway at the famous Kings Casino in Rozvadov, the Czech Republic, since February 3. The stop is once again being hosted in collaboration with the Spanish Poker Festival (SPF) and already a number of Indian pros have been spotted at the series. We saw four among them, namely, Kanishka Samant (349,000), Manish Goenka (349,000), Jaydeep Dawer (202,000) and Himanshu Dewan (125,000) making it to Day 2 in the Spanish Cup yesterday with the third and last starting flight currently underway.

The domestic gaming sector was at the receiving end of a shocker this week with Goa CM, Pramod Sawant, finalizing a blanket ban on locals from entering casinos. Sawant has given the Commercial Tax Commissioner the charge to act as the state’s Gaming Commissioner. The move has invited severe criticism, with Ports Minister Michael Lobo and State Congress chief Girish Chodankar both opposing the ban.

For Fantasy Sports, on the other hand, there was finally time for celebration. The two-member bench of Justices Rohinton F. Nariman and S. Ravindra Bhat dismissed Sachar’s application, settling once and for all that fantasy sports are games of skill.

The outbreak of the Coronavirus meanwhile has had a significant impact on the gaming industry. Many countries have placed travel restrictions, and as an immediate fallout, Triton Poker has indefinitely called off the scheduled Triton Super High Roller Series Jeju that was to kick off on February 10. Though the WPT Philippines slated from February 14 to 17 at Okada Manila is on track, tournament organizers have slashed down the guarantee for the Main Event. Macau is the hardest hit among the popular gaming locations. Nearly 80% percent of the region’s revenue comes from casinos, and the administration has announced a shutdown of casinos for 15 days. If the situation is not contained, this could have more severe ramifications for future events as well.

There’s some exciting live action to look forward to in Goa starting later this month, with the Deltin Poker Tournament (DPT) announcing three live stops in the first half of 2020. Sounding off the action will be DPT Xpress (DPTX) that will run from February 27 to March 1 at Casino Deltin Royale. Another DPTX stop will be hosted at Deltin JAQK (March 26 to 29) before the brand returns to Deltin Royale for DPT April Edition (April 22 – 27).

Online Railbird Report

The online action ruled supreme this week, and topping the list of winners was Dhruvin’ thepokerplayer’ Kothari. The cash game specialist rose to the top of a 980-strong field in the IOPC #58 The Millionaire Legends ₹2 Crores GTD. In the final moments, he struck a five-way deal to capture the title for a jaw-dropping ₹36.77 Lakhs! Kothari had notably fired six bullets on Day 1B and had brought the biggest stack forward from the flight. His persistence and his impressive run made him the top performer of the week and also our “PokerGuru Star of the Week!”

The Millionaire also awarded seven-figure scores to Day 1A chip leader, Abhineet ‘bankelal13’ Jain (runner-up for ₹34.06 Lakhs), Young Gun Arsh ‘BigggTymeR’ Grover (3rd for ₹27.94 Lakhs), bracelet winner Nikita’ Pterodactyl’ Luther (4th for ₹24.13 Lakhs) and online crusher Anant’ Pro’ Purohit (5th for ₹18.44 Lakhs).

Also snagging a big score was Manoj’ MRBLUE’ Pentakota, who took down the IOPC #40 High Roller ₹55 Lakhs GTD for ₹17.60 Lakhs.
