In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker’ we bring to you the weekly round up of the biggest online scores by Indian MTT players along with the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit.

Here are this week`s top stories

This past week saw railbirds relishing updates from numerous live tournaments all across the globe with a number of new champions grabbing titles and trophies at different events. It didn’t matter whether it was the eastern or western hemisphere; Team India made headlines all through the week.

Manila hovered over all of the past week, with a large Indian team making waves and at the first-ever PokerStars Festival Manila. The series certainly ended with the best possible impact, as Uday Bansal managed to clinch the main event for ₱4,676,000 (₹59.24 Lakhs). In all, Indians picked up an impressive seven titles at the series.

This week also had India’s only two-time WSOP bracelet winner – Nipun Java return to the spotlight. Java displayed another stupendous performance as he shipped Event#1: $570 Deep Stack (Re-Entry) event at the ongoing Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open for $230,849.

By the end of the month, the live tournament action will continue in the east with the commencement of Macau Poker Cup.

The live action notwithstanding, the online cash registers too were ringing all through the week with several notable Indians netting decent scores. Topping the charts is Sumit Sapra who takes our PokerGuru Star of the Week” title.

In domestic news, it was a week full of several breakthroughs. On the online front, Punjab & Haryana High Court has recognized fantasy sports as a game of skill. Goa debacles continued as CM Manohar Parrikar stated that the government would examine whether cash transactions can be prohibited in casinos. Parrikar also submitted his nomination for the upcoming by-elections.

In international news, WPT announced the first ever stop in Japan and 2018 Aussie Millions Poker schedule was also released. In our tournament news section, we bring you additional reports from the Star Sydney Championships & PokerStars Festival Bucharest.

Several familiar faces made notable scores this past week and topping the cashes list was Sumit ‘boronyx’ Sapra who won $2,069.94 for 1st place in the PokerStars ‘Hot $27, $6K GTD’ and takes our “PokerGuru Star of the Week” title.

Sharad ‘Keenyle’ Rao won $1,833.25 for 25th place in the PokerStars ‘$1,050 Thursday Thrill [Progressive KO], $325K GTD’

Raghav ‘rossoneri23’ Bansal won $1,333.13 for 11th place in the PokerStars ‘$215 Monday 6-Max, $60K GTD’

Prabhat ‘SuicideSpree’ Mukherjea won $1,207.39 for 10th place in the PokerStars ‘Bounty Builder $109, $150K GTD’

Akash ‘proFISHnal’ Malik won $1,070.74 for 2nd place in the PokerStars ‘Hot $22, $5K GTD’

Apart from being the first ever PokerStars Festival series to be held in Manila, the recently concluded series was also the largest international tournament in the history of the Philippines.

It was a historic series for Team India with the contingent clinching seven titles including the highlight win by Uday Bansal. Bansal displayed a stellar performance in the Main Event and topped a strong field of 594 runners to walk away with ₱4,676,000 (₹59.24 Lakhs) in prize money along with claiming the title of the first main event champion.

Sam Polishetty too got the Indian flag flying high after topping the 87-player field at the ₱5,600 No-Limit Hold’em Knockout event after making a heads-up deal with his rival Christopher Mateo.

Nipun Java Wins Event #1 of 2017 Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open For $230,849

Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open (SHRPO),one of North America’s largest and most prestigious tournaments had a grand opening for its 2016/2017 edition. In the news once again was two-time WSOP bracelet winner Nipun Java who juggernauted his way to victory in the $570 Deep Stack (Re-Entry) event pocketing $230,849.

Punjab & Haryana High Court Recognizes Fantasy Sports as Game of Skill

In a breakthrough development for fantasy sports, the Punjab and Haryana High Court, in an order recognized that such games can’t be considered gambling. The ruling was made after Varun Gumber filed a petition against fantasy site Dream 11. The court rejected the petitioner’s contentions noting that fantasy sports is not gambling but a legal business activity.

Manohar Parrikar to Contest in By-Election; Govt to Examine Prohibiting Cash Transactions in Casinos

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar filed his nomination for the August 23 by-election from the Panaji Assembly seat contesting against Girish Chodankar of Congress. Chodankar said that his party would raise the issue of offshore casinos during the campaigning.The CM also stated that the government would check the casino operations and examine whether casinos can be instructed to prohibit all cash transactions.

WPT Announces First Ever ‘Special’ Stop in Japan

The World Poker Tour recently announced its partnership with Japan Poker Union Corporation and will be making its first-ever appearance in the country with a special event running from November 23-26. The venue has not yet been disclosed and the tournament will not be paying out any cash prizes (instead players will be rewarded with future WPT packages) due to the legal situation in Japan.

2018 Aussie Millions Poker Schedule Released

The Aussie Millions have announced their schedule for their 2018 Aussie Millions Poker Championship hosted at the Crown Poker Room at the Crown Melbourne. The series will roll out on January 17 and will run till February 5 featuring 26 numbered events with buy-ins ranging from AU$1,150 to AU$100,000.

Star Sydney Championships

Sydney’s longest running homegrown poker tournament series i.e. Star Poker’s the Sydney Championship sis is celebrating its ninth anniversary this year and is currently underway at the Star Poker room.

The highlight $3,000 Main Event ($1 million guaranteed) attracted a total of 496 hopefuls and besting them all was Henry Tran who walked away with AU$300,000 for his finish.

Sam Grafton Wins PokerStars Festival Bucharest Main Event

Britain’s Sam Grafton who is popularly known for his commentary on certain poker league streams, clinched the PokerStars Festival Bucharest Main Event title for €117,707. Grafton bettered a 736-player field taking down his biggest live tournament victory in five years.
