Sunday is the biggest day of the week for poker players, and while everyone else is making plans to go out, the serious players are settling in for what they hope will be a long and productive session.

Last Sunday was particularly memorable for 20-year-old Srihari ‘bangbang99’ Bang who had a Sunday session unlike any other. The Bengaluru-based youngster took down the IOPC Millionaire on Spartan Poker for a career-best ₹48.56 Lakhs – and he won his seat in the event through a ₹660 online satellite! The multi-flight tournament was the headline event at the record-breaking IOPC series and offered a colossal ₹2 Crore prize pool guarantee. Bang came out on top of a massive 2,842-entry field to win close to half a million – the highest top prize awarded by an online tournament in the country so far. While for most players this would have been the end of a memorable Sunday grind but not for Bang, as soon after winning the Millionaire, he realized that he was chip leading the Sunday Special PKO on PokerStars India. Believe it or not, Bang went on to win the Sunday Special as well for ₹2.85 Lakhs. The writing was on the wall for this rising star as in addition to these two title victories, he had won PokerStars India’s Upper Cut on Saturday for ₹1.52 Lakhs and made numerous deep runs which included another final table finish at an IOPC event. In all, Bang took home a total of ₹54.35 Lakhs in winnings over the weekend!

Speaking to us about his inspiring run last Sunday, Bang said, “The Spartan grind started at 12 and went on till 12 in the night. When the Spartan tournament ended, I realised that I was the chip leader in PokerStars India`s Sunday Special and ended shipping it. One of the key hands was when I 3-bet AKs and GM (Goonjan Mall) jammed pocket eights. I called and won the flip. I had the worst possible position on FT as aggro chip leader GM was in position and was applying pressure.”

Talking about how it felt to get such a massive score, he said, “Feels surreal sattying my way through the MILLIONAIRE qualifying on the last flight. I also shipped the PokerStars India Sunday special to finish it off in style. Definitely worth the 14hr grind. “

When I quizzed him on his future plans, the prompt reply was, “The dream of being at WSOP is still in pursuit.”

His age truly belies his maturity and I can say this with reasonable assertion as when I asked him what it took to reach here, he said, “When it comes to the grind, there are no shortcuts, there is only hard work and persistence.”

My immediate thoughts after the chat were to note down his name in my “To Follow” list because this is one player I am sure we will hear a lot about in the future.

Thankfully, there were others who were given a chance to win titles last Sunday, and the other standout performance came from another relatively lesser-known player Anchit ‘allin’ Agarwal. The US-based Agarwal topped the USOP Main Event on Uma Poker for 8.40 Lakhs! The USOP closed out a smashing run on Sunday with Abhay ‘Baba123’ Randhawa taking down the final event of the series, aptly named the USOP Closer, for 3.23 Lakhs.

Coming to the industry giant PokerBaazi that has been synonymous with well-structured high-value tournaments, last Sunday was no different. Well-known tournament regular Vinay ‘Vinstill’ BK outlasted a field of 546 entries in the Baazi Super Sunday (BSS) SuperStack 25 Lakhs GTD banking 5.30 Lakhs in prize money. Recapping Vinay`s online exploits would require extensive work but just to touch upon some of his most prominent this years – Vinay had won this same event in February for 4.44 Lakhs, and only three days ago, he finished runner-up in PokerBaazi`s Fri-YAY 10 Lakhs GTD (RE) for 1.55 Lakhs!

Like the BSS SuperStack, several other PokerBaazi tournaments saw their guarantees overshot last Sunday. While The Monster ₹5 Lakhs GTD saw a prize pool collection of ₹5.62 Lakhs, in the BSS PLO the advertised guarantee of ₹2 Lakhs was smashed with the prize pool collection touching ₹2.18 Lakhs. The Sunday winners list at the site included names like ‘ballerscholar’ (The Monster 6- Max ₹5 Lakhs GTD (RE) for ₹1.32 Lakhs), Abhishek ‘ketchup’ Kumar (BSS Megastack ₹5 Lakhs GTD (RE) for ₹1.24 Lakhs), Himanshu ‘ISquirtBullets’ Dewan (BSS PLO ₹2 Lakh GTD (Half RE) for ₹56,135), and ‘subhampa’ (Sunday ₹1 Lakh GTD (RE) for ₹17,500).

At PokerStars India, we saw Shagun ‘Sogani22’ Jain (The Classic ₹1.5 Lakhs GTD for ₹38,595), ‘ParaDroid42’ (Sunday Warm-Up ₹1.5 Lakhs GTD for ₹31,249), ‘vivekkurmee’ (Sunday Supersonic ₹1,100 NLHE for ₹24,269) and Ajay ‘raakaa1’ Agarwal (Sunday Storm ₹1 Lakh GTD for ₹15,214) winning titles.

While not exactly a blockbuster Sunday for the PokerGuru Ambassadors, there were intermittent deep runs by the team. In the BSS SuperStack, four PokerGuru Ambassadors, namely, Rohit ‘rohit22rm’ Mishra (13th for ₹31,668), Faiz ‘AilaGaya’ Alam (17th for ₹27,300), Kartik ‘TheInternetKid’ Ved (19th for ₹23,751) and Vivek ‘Nutpeddling729’ Singh (20th for ₹23,751) posted deep runs, while in The Monster, Arjanveer ‘holdbaby’ Chadha (11th for ₹9,675) and Tathagata ‘Tintin84’ Sengupta (18th for ₹6,750) finished ITM.

The BSS Megastack saw the complete PokerGuru team in attendance, and two of them, Rony ‘bisadip176’ Chowdhary (3rd for ₹56,050) and Vivek ‘Nuttpeddling729’ Singh (9th for ₹12,400) final tabled the event. Faiz Alam (11th for ₹9,050) and Gokul ‘Nygma’ Raj (12th for ₹9,050) fell whiskers short of the final table.

Coming to fast-growing site Khelo365, the biggest Sunday tournament was the Twister ₹2 Lakhs GTD Deepstack NLHE where ‘ASHWINKUMAR’ emerged victorious for ₹80,000. ‘Vanadev’ (Mega Splash ₹1 Lakh GTD NLHE for ₹46,000), ‘Rughani’ (Big Bang ₹1 Lakh GTD NLHE for ₹40,800) and ‘Talaketu’ (Deep Stack ₹40K GTD NLHE for ₹17,200) took down the other featured events on Khelo365.
