2018 was a year that saw smashing action on the online felts. We saw online sites like PokerBaazi re-write the way poker is played, with their savvy new software client making it much easier for online railbirds to navigate and play while fast-growing portal, 9stacks got the VC interest started in this space. At the same time, gaming giant PokerStars launched its ring-fenced site, PokerStars.IN, in partnership with Sugal & Damani Group, and went on to consolidate its position by becoming the ‘skill partner’ for Mediarex Group’s Global Poker League (GPL) India. Other online poker portals, MOP and Khelo365 gained more ground with round-the-clock promotions.

The year also brought in landmark changes in the domestic online poker environment, with different factors helping the poker space expand into a bigger market. Apart from these structural changes, the environment for online tournament action remained action-packed. From different editions of the PokerBaazi Premier League (PPL) to regular tournament offerings on sites including 9stacks, MadOverPoker (MOP) and PokerStars, online poker saw many momentous wins.

The last Sunday of the year remained just as intense, with all the top online poker sites playing out their Sunday special tournaments. Headlining the action was the Sunday Special ₹15 Lakhs GTD on PokerStars India that crowned a champion in ‘MarwadiPro’, who took home ₹3.18 Lakhs. Another major Sunday tournament at PokerStars India, the Sunday Stars ₹2 Lakhs GTD was taken down by Chirag‘WhyworrY_56’ Sodha who defeated Anuj ‘brockLesnar95’ Yadav heads-up and won ₹47,726. dgdg9won the Sunday Storm ₹2 Lakhs GTD for ₹38,516 and ‘bhasm@sur1’ took down the Sunday Supersonic for ₹22,141.

Different Sunday-special tournaments on PokerBaazi saw the Baazi Super Sunday (BSS) SuperStack ₹15 Lakhs GTD taking a slight beating last Sunday with a sizeable overlay. Mihir ‘Mihirparv’ Thakkar defeated ‘Amarjeet’ heads-up in the event to win ₹2.70 Lakhs in prize money. Gaurav ‘gaug17’ Sood took down the BSS PLO ₹5 Lakhs GTD for ₹1.27 Lakhs and ‘Borntogamble’ won the BSS MegaStack ₹5 Lakhs GTD for ₹1.12 Lakhs.

Rising poker talent Kartik ‘TheInternetKid’ Ved and protégé of Team PokerStars pro Aditya Agarwal was another standout performer this past Sunday as he won two events across two different sites. He took down the PokerBaazi’s The Monster 6-Max ₹5 Lakhs GTD for ₹1.09 Lakhs and went on to claim PokerStars India’s The Classic for ₹38,404, taking his cumulative Sunday winnings to ₹1.47 Lakhs.

PokerRaj continued its run of Nations Cup qualifier tournaments. Taking down the last qualifier for 2018 was Neeraj ‘Luckyguy’ Kumar who outran 92 runners (including 46 re-entries) to win ₹38,000. The Nations Cup Online Qualifiers are fast reaching their conclusion, with only two Sundays left before the finale slated for January 13, 2019.

MadOverPoker has been doling out attractive offers and promotional runs this year. On Sunday, MOP hosted the Sunday Super Grind series that crowned winners in Vitsituo ‘Phantom’ Mepfhuo (Dynamite for ₹32,162), Hriday ‘Sigma’ Mondal (Grenade for ₹21,286) and Saswati ‘CHIPCHAIN’ Dhal (Night Crawler for ₹15,112).
