May 12 was a ‘Mega-Sunday’ with the finals of the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) being played at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad between the Chennai Super Kings and the Mumbai Indians. It was a nail-biting match which saw the Mumbai Indians become the first team to lift the IPL trophy for a record fourth time on the shoulders of the exceptional performances of Jasprit Bumrah and Kieron Pollard. While the entire of the nation, including the poker fraternity was glued to their televisions, it did not deter poker players from their usual Sunday grind, with many players multitasking their way to enjoying both sports.

After an eventful closure to April with its PokerBaazi Premier League (PPL) Special Edition, online poker site PokerBaazi kept the excitement going through the past weekend. The site’s signature Sunday event, BSS SuperStack ₹25 Lakhs GTD (RE) registered 554 entries (includes 252 re-entries) where seasoned pro Alok ‘TheProfessional’ Birewar captured the title after defeating Pritam ‘pritamrockon’ Dhokane heads-up. Birewar added a hefty ₹5.38 Lakhs to his bankroll while Dhokane picked up ₹3.77 Lakhs for finishing runner-up.

“The field was alright, I kept getting good tables so was lucky that way. The final table was swingy. I got lucky in few spots when I was short,” Birewar recalled, talking about his win with PokerGuru.

However, that isn’t all that PokerBaazi had to offer this past Sunday. True to its tradition the site launched another event – Weekly Super 5 ₹5 Lakhs GTD – which featured a buy-in of ₹108 and will be a regular feature on the site from now on, with six flights – one per day running from Monday to Saturday and Day 2 playing out over the weekend. The event attracted a monster field of 2788 entries on its inaugural run last week, but only 354 returned on Day 2 that kicked off on May 12 from 8.30 PM onwards. Running intensely through the night, the tournament was eventually taken down by ‘ideatheater11’ for ₹74,650.

Claiming the title across the other events on PokerBaazi were Pranav ‘mithrandir16’ Anand (BSS PLO ₹5 Lakh GTD (RE) for ₹1.29 Lakhs), ‘Ekaterina’ (The Monster 6-Max ₹5 Lakh GTD for ₹1.24 Lakhs), ‘Rajjni007’ (Grinders #33 Main Event ₹5 Lakhs GTD (RE) for ₹1 Lakh), and ‘direhash’ (Sunday ₹1 Lakh GTD (RE) for ₹17,500).

The overlays in PokerStars India’s Sunday flagship tournament, Sunday Special – Progressive KO ₹20 Lakhs GTD, have persisted. Despite numerous revamps, including changing the format and increasing, then decreasing the guarantee, the Sunday Special has been unable to meet its guarantee so far. In an attempt to boost the attendance and as a co-branding effort for the upcoming India Summer Championship of Online Poker (INSCOOP) which will be PokerStars India’s biggest guarantee series till date, the brand rolled out the ‘MAGIC’ promotion which doled out prizes on random tables at regular intervals. Nonetheless, there was still an overlay of around ₹3.25 Lakhs at yesterday’s event which registered 355 entries (187 unique and 148 re-entries).

Utsav ‘rannyOO6’ Taneja, who seems to be in stellar form of late given his runner-up finish in last week’s Sunday Special, took down the title this week. Taneja took on a stacked field of challengers on the final table featuring some of the most established names in the domestic circuit including the likes of Goonjan ‘gmtesting.ind’ Mall (runner-up for ₹2.20 Lakhs), Young Gun Abhinav abhi58 Iyer (3rd for ₹1.50 Lakhs), PokerGuru Team Ambassador Ashish ‘Spewushhhiiiii’ Ahuja (5th for ₹66,567), Ankit b00mtr00p3r Wadhawan (6th for ₹62,519) and Harsh kakori kabab Dembla (9th for ₹61,062). Taneja outlasted them all to bag ₹3.68 Lakhs for his spectacular win.

The other events on PokerStars India’s Sunday roster crowned winners in ‘AceMirage81’ (Sunday Stars ₹2 Lakhs GTD for₹43,622), J500PC (The Classic NLHE ₹1.5 Lakhs GTD for ₹39,562), tks5432 (Sunday Warm-Up ₹1.5 Lakhs GTD for ₹33,667), and GJReddy (Sunday Storm ₹2 Lakhs GTD for ₹24,731).

Amid the battalion of Team PokerGuru Ambassadors seen picking scores at PokerBaazi tournaments was Rony ‘bisadip176’ Chowdhury who final tabled PokerBaazi’s The Monster 6-Max ₹5 Lakh GTD, finishing fourth for ₹41,500. Meanwhile, Laksh Pal ‘B00MTilt23’ Singh (24th for ₹21,702), Ratul ‘MuscariAs’ Steves (26th for ₹16,038), Mithun ‘ThePokeRajaIN’ Mahesh (34th for ₹16,116) and Nadeem ‘Downtownplaya’ Basha (46th for ₹8,719), all posted scores in PokerStars India’s Sunday Special. Arjanveer Singh ‘ballistik310’ Chadha who has been having a phenomenal time on the virtual felts these past few weeks, had a relatively quieter Sunday yesterday with only one newsworthy score – an 11th place finish worth ₹5,051 in the Sunday Stars. Basha (runner-up for ₹29,316), Parikshit Zapdos123 Dhall (5th for ₹11,928) and Chowdhury (8th for ₹4,853), all final tabled The Classic NLHE.

Up-and-coming poker site, UMA Poker hosted the Sunday Hangover ₹12 Lakh GTD last night, which attracted 159 entries, with only the top 28 spots receiving payouts. Arpit ungal Garg emerged as the eventual victor and took home ₹2.28 Lakhs.

In celebration of its first anniversary, Calling Station is presently hosting the Money Spinner series which played out four high-value tournaments yesterday. The list of winners included ‘Ducait’ (Money Spinner ₹1.5 Lakhs GTD PLO for ₹45,000), ‘Maxxts (Money Spinner ₹75K GTD for ₹26,250), shanay1997 (Money Spinner ₹1 Lakh GTD for ₹22,000) and Irmaboy (Money Spinner ₹50K GTD for ₹9,375).

Lastly, fast-growing poker site Khelo 365 crowned champions in ‘Texasdolly3326’ (Big Bang ₹1 Lakh GTD for ₹50,000), and rishi159 (Deep Stack ₹40K GTD for ₹17,200).
