After several delays, the Nagaland government has now scheduled its online skill games bill to be heard by a select committee on March 2, according to a report by Jay Sayta of Glaws.in. The meeting will be held at the assembly secretariat’s committee room at 11 am on Wednesday.

The bill had been pending since more than eight months and proposes a new law to regulate online skill games, such as rummy, poker and fantasy sports in the north-eastern state. The chief reason for the delay was opposition from local bodies like the Church, media and social organizations.

An earlier meeting scheduled on February 10 for the select committee discussion was stalled. Now the meeting has been reconvened and K. Sekhose, Additional Secretary of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly issued a press release asking all the members to attend the meeting.

Once the five-member select committee approves of the bill, it will be taken up in the budget session of the legislative assembly starting March 15 for passing. This means the next couple of months will be a crucial time for the fate of online gaming operators.

‘The Nagaland Prohibition of Gambling and Promotion and Regulation of Online Games of Skill Bill, 2015’ was introduced in July 2015 by Chief Minister TR Zeliang of the ruling Nagaland People’s Front (NPF). With this bill, Nagaland will become the first Indian State to pass a law on online skill games.
