The 2017 Caribbean Poker Party Festival $1,100 MILLIONS Open hosted at the beautiful Punta Cana at Melia Caribe Tropical attracted a massive field of 812 entries and topping them all was Germany’s high roller specialist Rainer Kempe (cover image) for $200,000. Kempe has some staggeringly impressive live earnings amounting to over $11,000,000 and now sits at ninth place on the Global Poker Index following this win.
Kempe secured the victory after defeating Italy’s Claudio Di Giacomo heads-up. Kempe’s small but devoted rail included his girlfriend Maria Ho and a woman who appeared to be his mother. Post his win, the champion said,“I’m just happy that everything went as smooth as it did in the end.”
Although Canadian Vincent Tremblay was looking to dominate early on, his good fortune was short-lived as he became the first to fall. Paul Hockin’s ace-queen suited came up against Tremblay’s pocket nines. Tremblay dodged the flop, but Hockin paired his ace on the turn, and took down the pot after a brick river.
Following Tremblay, his countryman William Blais and Czech Republic Michael Sklenicka busted next in seventh and sixth place respectively.
Next to fall was Romanian Andrei-Lucian Boghean, who was knocked out by Manuel Martinez. Boghean jammed with king-ten offsuit and got looked up by Martinez’s ace-queen suited. Martinez hit the nut flush on the board to eliminate Boghean from the event.
Paul Hockin’s tournament run ended next when he three-bet shoved with ace-three against the eventual champion Kempe’s ace-nine. Hockin got no love from the dry board and was sent packing in fourth place.
Spaniard Manuel Martinez then hit the rail in third place when his king-jack failed to improve against Kempe’s king-queen and that set up the 90-minute long heads-up duel between Kempe and Di Giacomo.
Di Giacomo began the heads-up battle in the chip lead but his stack kept on dwindling as Kempe grabbed pot after pot. On the final hand of the tournament, Di Giacomo’s king-queen met Kempe’s ace-king. An ace on the flop declared Kempe the champion!
