Richard Marquez Takes Down PPWC Main Event For PHP 4,850,000

The PPPoker World Championship (PPWC) Main Event ran from February 16 to 21 attracting a total of 383 entries – falling slightly short of its PHP 20 Million prize pool guarantee. Outlasting the huge field was Richard Marquez (cover image) who took down the event, bagging PHP 4,850,000 (₹66.30 Lakhs) in first-place prize money.

Marquez began the final day as the chip leader and did most of the heavy lifting by eliminating four out of the six finalists including the eventual runner-up Mike Takayama. Marquez bested the formidable WSOP bracelet winner Takayama to clinch the title and he even banked his career-best score in the process.

 

Team India at PPWC Main Event

Team India enjoyed a smashing start in the Main Event with 2019 APT Vietnam Main Event champion Abhinav Iyer bagging the biggest stack on the opening starting flight – Day 1A. In total, six Indian progressed to Day 2 from all three starting flights, namely Iyer, Kalyan Chakravarthy, Aditya Sushant, Rajeev Kanjani, Rishab Jain and Jasven Saigal.

Kanjani was the sole Indian who made it through to the final day where he finished eighth for PHP 446,200 (₹6.10 Lakhs). Sushant, Iyer and Chakravarthy also posted scores, while Jain and Saigal busted out empty-handed.

Team India’s PPWC campaign however is far from over. After cashing in the Main Event, Aditya Sushant jumped into the High Roller where he has reached the final six and is presently sitting pretty with the second-biggest stack of 454,000. The frontrunner to win the top prize worth PHP 1,255,000 (₹17.12 Lakhs) is Jung Seung Mook, who will be coming back tomorrow in the chip lead with his stack of 610,000.

 

Main Event – Final Day Recap

Following the eliminations of Markus Garberg (7th for PHP 660,000), Rajeev Kanjani (8th for PHP 446,200 – ₹6,10,851) and Ken Foo Hsien Loong (9th for PHP 291,000) on Day 3, the final six players got some much-needed shut eye before returning to the Resorts World Manila for the final day`s play. The Filipio dominated final table saw Richard Marquez starting off in the chip lead.

Final Table Recap

Dong Kyoon Seo became chip leader Richard Marquez’ first victim of the day when the former pitted his against Marquez’ . The board gave Seo a pair of queens but it was no match for Marquez’s pocket rockets.

Finishing in fifth place was German pro Hans Jurgen Homner. Homner’s ran into Marquez’ . With the runout missing both players, Marquez’s raked in the pot with his ace kicker, sending Homner to the rail.

With four players remaining, Mark Gruendemann raised from under-the-gun to 120,000. Lester Edoc called from the button and Mike Takayama jammed from the big blind. Gruendemann called risking his tournament life and Edoc folded. Gruendemann tabled as Takayama turned over . The board offered no help to Gruendemann leading to his fourth place exit.

Down to three-handed play, Lester Edoc became Marquez’ third victim for the day. Edoc limped in from the button with and Marquez raised to 205,000 from small blind with . Edoc shoved all-in and Marquez called. The board showed , resulting in Edoc’s third place elimination.

Richard Marquez (7,455,000) and Mike Takayama (4,035,000) started the heads-up with the former firmly in the lead. Takayama gave a tough fight to Marquez but in the end succumbed to the latter’s dominant play.

On the final hand of the event, Marquez raised to 170,000 with and Takayama called holding . Takayama checked the flop and Marquez fired a bet of 200,000 with two-pair. Takayama raised to 470,000 and Marquez moved all-in. Takayama called for his tournament life only to see the and runout. Takayama’s pocket eights were not enough against Marquez’ two pairs of sevens and fives and with that.Marquez captured the title, along with a hefty PHP 4,850,000 top prize.

High Roller – Day 1 Recap

As the PPWC Main Event was coming to a close, the High Roller took flight. With a buy-in of PHP 110,000, the event drew in 37 entries generating a PHP 3,589,000 prize pool.

Indian pro Aditya Sushant featured prominently in the event and the 2017 WSOP bracelet winner even made it among the six finalists. In fact, he currently holds the second-biggest stack of 454,000 on the final table behind Jung Seung Mook who holds the largest stack of 610,000.
