Rajeev Kanjani Places 8th in the PPWC Main Event For ₹6.10 Lakhs, Richard Marquez Leads 6-Handed Final Table

The PPPoker World Championship (PPWC) Main Event is only a day away from its grand finale. Among the 16 finalists who started the day was India`s Rajeev Kanjani. Kanjani was the sole Indian to progress to Day 3 and after a gruelling day at the felts, he also reached the nine-player final table. His spectacular run came to an end when he was eliminated in eighth place for PHP 446,200 (₹6.10 Lakhs).

Team India enjoyed a trailblazing run in the Main Event as six Indian challengers made the cut for Day 2 led by 2019 APT Vietnam Main Event winner Abhinav Iyer, alongside Kalyan Chakravarthy, Aditya Sushant, Rajeev Kanjani, Rishab Jain and Jasven Saigal. Five out of the six pros failed to make it to Day 3, however, while Sushant (17th for ₹2.12 Lakhs), Iyer (34th for ₹1.16 Lakhs) and Chakravarthy (57th for ₹1.08 Lakhs) made in-the-money (ITM) finishes, Saigal and Jain were eliminated empty-handed.

Filipino pro Richard Marquez bagged the overnight chip lead with a massive stack of 2,795,000 and will now lead the remaining six finalists to the final day. Though Marquez has the biggest stack, he will face stiff competition from WSOP bracelet winner Mike Takayama who is hot on his coattails with a count of 2,670,000. Other big names on the final table include Irishman Mark Gruendemann (2,480,000) and Filipino superstar Lester Edoc (1,505,000).

 

Main Event – Day 3 Recap

Day 3 opened with 16 players gunning to reach the nine-handed final table. Among the 16 was lone Indian challenger Rajeev Kanjani.

Kanjani had qualified for Day 3 with a commendable stack of 516,000, which was the ninth-biggest stack at the start of the day. He eliminated Jeffrey Pamplona when the latter pitted his against Kanjani’s . The runout missed both players and Kanjani’s ace-nine high won him the pot, ending Pamplona’s run in 15th place for PHP 232,800.

Soon thereafter Kanjani doubled up through Ken Foo Hsien Loong, taking his stack to 1.2 Million. Following the elimination of Denis Cheremisin in 10th place for PHP 232,800, the nine-handed final table was formed. Loong busted out in ninth place for PHP 291,000, leaving Kanjani as the shortest stack on the final table with 570,000 behind. Kanjani tried hard but could not hold on much longer. When Richard Marquez raised to 90,000 from hijack, Kanjani 3-bet shoved with his remaining stack of 355,000 from the small blind. Seo Dongkyoon re-shoved from the big blind and Marquez folded his hand. Kanjani tabled against Dongkyoon’s . The board bricked and Dongkyoon’s ace-high kicker knocked Kanjani out in eighth place for PHP 446,200 (₹6,10,851).

Markus Garberg‘s seventh place finish for PHP 660,000, at the hands of Marquez was the last elimination of the day.

The six remaining players are all gunning for the top prize of PHP 4,850,000 (₹66.30 Lakhs) and grabbing the overnight chip lead was Richard Marquez (2,795,000). Along with Mike Takayama (2,670,000) and Mark Gruendemann (2,480,000), they make up the top three stacks.

Other notables who were eliminated on Day 3 include Mark Amparo (11th for PHP 232,800), Ivan Guillem (12th for PHP 232,800), Daniyar Auganbayev (13th for PHP 232,800), Georges Chehade (14th for PHP 232,800) and William Ysmael (16th for PHP 155,200).

Play will resume tomorrow and will declare a champion by nightfall.
