The Jeju Shinhwa World – Landing Casino in Jeju, Korea is gearing up for some high-octane and thrilling poker action as the Red Dragon festival will soon be coming to town! The global poker giant PokerStars announced the return of the Red Dragon series which will hit the felts towards the end of this year.

Starting on November 30, this highly popular series will host a total of 20 events that will run from November 30 till December 9, boasting of KRW2.6 Billion in guaranteed prizes. With buy-ins ranging from KRW220,000 to KRW60,000,000, the star attraction of the series will undoubtedly be the signature Red Dragon event which will play out from December 5 to December 9.

The Red Dragon series has moved venues a few times however this is the first time in history where it will be held outside of Macau. Nonetheless, this announcement has come as a pleasant news to the Asian poker community that has been in the dark since the closure of PokerStars Live at the City of Dreams in Macau. With no word on a new location other than a partnership with the IEC (International Entertainment Corporation), this news comes as a silver lining for poker players in Asia.

Due to its freezeout format, the Red Dragon Main Event has been dubbed as a unique tournament. Having come a long way since its inauguration in 2008, it is certainly the largest freezeout tournament in the region. Starting with only 33 attendees and a guaranteed prize pool of HK$500,000 in 2008, it has grown to a record-breaking 1,308 players and over HK$17 Million in prize money in 2017.

IEC Chairman, Stanley Choi had stated in May that they were very close to securing a new venue in Macau. Till date no confirmation has come in on the same, however, Choi had stated, back in August, that the company is “likely” to use Studio City for the Macau Poker Cup (MCP) tournament series.

Choi also expressed expansion to many countries in Asia with Korea as the next target. “Besides Macau, we are also exploring Korea,” Choi said. “That will be our next target. There’s a big casino there with 3,000 rooms that’s opened up last month. There’s another one opening in Vietnam, opening in 2019, that I’m looking at.”

He further added, “So there are a lot of options in Asia, and we’re looking at several opportunities in several Asian countries.”
