Days after Kolkata had a tournament; it is now the turn of Nepal. The mountainous kingdom will host the Mahjong Poker Championship from June 1 to 5 at the Casino Mahjong poker roomin Kathmandu.
The tournament is a joint initiative of Rajeev Raut (Star Poker Room, Bengaluru), Shashwat Agarwal (Aquarium 7, Kolkata) and Phurba Rinzing, all who have years of experience in the administrative side of the game. Speaking about the event, Raut stated that “We have tentatively planned six events for the coming year till June 2017. A good event in June will give the necessary impetus to the annual schedule.”
Care has been taken to ensure the event does not clash with any other, with the organizers confident of drawing a healthy player crowd. “We are very confident for high numbers for the cash games. I know we have received many confirmations from the local Nepal populace as well as players from Kolkata, Chennai and Sikkim as well who interested in cash games. This is more popular in Nepal but we want to create a tournament culture also going ahead,” Raut informs.
The 5-event tournament will begin with cash games and a Player’s Party on the first day. There will be an ₹15K Freezeout with a guaranteed ₹8 Lakhs in prizes on June 2. The highlight will be an ₹30K buy-in Main Event with ₹25 Lakhs GTD and two starting-flights, allowing players to ride in again, should they bust early. Moving away from the norm, all PLO cash games will be played six-handed.
In a bid to sweeten the deal, the organizers are offering flight reimbursement to players who play for stipulated hours on the cash game tables. The organizers also plan to provide players with day sightseeing offers, as an added incentive.
