The Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) $1,650 Main Event at Hollywood Casino St. Louis sold 480 entry slips, generating a prize pool of $646,020. The event paid out the top 54 places and collecting the lion’s share of the prize money was Wisconsin’s Mike Shin (cover image). He defeated Nick Pupillo heads-up to win his first HPT Trophy along with the $160,632 cash prize, crossing $1.5 Million in lifetime winnings.

Shin had a roller coaster ride in the event as even after starting Day 2 as the chip leader he lost most of his chips. He recovered swiftly and ultimately went on to win the title.

Talking to PokerNews reporters after his win, Shin said, “I’ve been working on my game a lot, so it was something I expected, I mean, my games not the fanciest but I’m always playing to get the job done.”

Final Table Recap

Just a few hands into the play, Jason Darland shoved with , and Mike Shin looked him up tabling pocket sevens. There was no help for Darland on the board, and he exited the Main Event in ninth place.

Shortly after that, Robert Mitchell’s ace-ten suited lost to Thomas Gabriel’s pocket tens, and the former walked out in eighth place.

Hal Kirkpatrick was the next one out and exited in the next level. With the board open , Kirkpatrick moved all-in holding pocket jacks and was delivered the bad news by Austin McCormick who showed him a turned straight.

It took a long two hours for the next elimination to take place, and the unfortunate victim was Josh Turner, who was eliminated by Shin in sixth place. Jeff Sauer and Austin McCormick were the next ones to exit in fifth and fourth place respectively.

Shin then set his sights on Thomas Gabriel, eliminating the latter to set up the heads-up match against Nick Pupillo.

Gabriel held a dominating 3:1 lead over Pupillo, and it took him less than 30 minutes to grab the title. On the final hand of the tournament, Shin moved all-in with , and Pupillo made the call with pocket treys. Shin turned a flush to win the title and the $160,632 top prize!
