WPT Japan: Junheng Situ Takes Down ¥20K Main Event For $13K WPT Passport

World Poker Tour (WPT) Asia Swing Season XVIII commenced on September 3 with the third edition of the WPT Vietnam which ran till September 11. The WPT Asia Swing landed in Japan next, and this time it was the third edition of the WPT Japan that played out from September 14 to 16.

Hosted at the Gajoen Hotel, the center of attraction, the ¥20,000 buy-in Main Event registered 541 entries across seven starting flights which was also the largest field ever for a WPT event in Japan! Due to regulatory restrictions, the competitors were not playing for money, but to get their hands on $33,000 worth of WPT passports which can be used to enter any WPT event around the world.

After several days of intense play, Junheng Situ (cover image) emerged as the Main Event champion and collected a WPT Passport worth $13,000, while also taking a 100-point lead on the WPT Asia Swing leaderboard. The player who tops the leaderboard will win a WPT India High Roller package which includes entry into the ₹1,00,000 buy-in (~$1,400) WPT India High Roller event, three nights complimentary accommodation, along with airport and boat transfers. The top three points winners of the WPT Asia Swing leaderboard will also receive an additional $500 cash prize which can be redeemed at the WPT India festival that is scheduled to commence on October 15.

Situ had entered the final table with the third biggest stack. En-route to his final showdown against eventual runner-up Osamu Shishime, Situ knocked out Shigenaga Yasuda and Takeshi Takahashi from the competition. After besting Shishime heads-up, Situ captured his career-first live title, along with the WPT trophy!

The next stop on the WPT Asia Swing schedule is at the Paradise City, Incheon where the WPT Korea begins today, with the KRW 1,650,000 buy-in Main Event slated to run from September 20 to 23.

The traditionally dressed Shigenaga Yasuda was the first player to depart from the final table when his were cracked by Junheng Situ’s , ending Yasuda’s run in ninth place.

At the start of level 23, Jundai Kato‘s ran into Takeshi Takahashi’s , resulting in the former’s exit in eighth place.

Three levels later, Takahisa Yasuta was eliminated in seventh place when his were outlasted by Keita Morimoto’s which bettered to a pair of sixes on the runout .

Immediately after that, Takeshi Takahashi‘s were defeated by Situ’s , resulting in Takahashi’s sixth-place finish.

Down to five-handed play, Osamu Shishime jammed from the cutoff with , and Ping Liu asked for an exact count before deciding to call with . The board turned over , and Shishime flopped a pair of sixes to eliminate Liu in fifth place.

Finishing in fourth place was Eiichi Kamagata. However, his elimination hand was not reported in the event`s live coverage.

More than an hour later, Keita Morimoto‘s deep run in the competition came to an end when his were overpowered by Shishime’s . The board bricked and Shishime’s jack kicker won him the pot, dismissing Morimoto in third place.

The heads-up battle between Osamu Shishime (9,175,000) and Junheng Situ (6,405,000) began with Shishime enjoying a comfortable lead. While the chip lead did change hands a few times, but in the end, it was Situ who clinched the title.

On the final hand, Shishime moved all-in for about 5,450,000 with and Situ called holding . The board revealed and offered no help to Shishime, relegating him to a runner-up finish. Situ went on to claim the trophy, along with a WPT Passport worth $13,000, as well as 100 points on the WPT Asia Swing leaderboard.
