Jeju Red Dragon: Bin Sun Wins Super High Roller, Xiang Liu Ships Baby Dragon

The record-breaking second edition of the 2019 Jeju Red Dragon is finally in the books. The seven-day long series comprised of 18 events that saw 1,735 players compete for a share of the massive ₩4,970,000,000 (~₹30.59 Crores) in prize pool guarantees.

Over a third of the prize money generated was awarded in the Red Dragon Main Event alone, making it the largest live poker tournament in South Korean history. The event saw 869 players from 20 different countries compete for a piece of the colossal ₩1,896,592,500 (~₹11.66 Crores) prize pool, with 108 players finishing ITM. China’s Zhihao Zhang was crowned the 30th Red Dragon Main event champion defeating Taiwan’s Ting Yi Tsai heads-up.

The second most prominent event in terms of prize money awarded was the Super High Roller, which collected ₩829,730,000 (~₹5.10 Crores) in the prize pool, sporting a ₩10,000,000 buy-in. The top 13 players were guaranteed a min-cash of ₩16,595,000 (~₹10.21 lakhs). In the end, Chinese pro Bin Sun won the event for a ₩ 220,295,000 (~₹1.35 Crores).

Among the other notable events, the ₩1.5M Baby Dragon was championed by China’s Xiang Liu for a ₩142,940,000 (~₹87.98 Lakhs) payday.

₩1.5M Baby Dragon

The PokerStars LIVE Asia ₩1.5M Baby Dragon recently concluded at the Jeju Shinhwa World – Landing Casino with China’s Xiang Liu winning the title for ₩142,940,000 (~₹87.98 lakhs). The two Day 1 flights ensured a field size of 593 entrants, a 98.9% increase in participation over the 298 entries the last edition that was won by 42-year-old American poker player James Lee for ₩ 74,310,000 (~₹45.73 lakhs).

Last year, there were quite a few Indian players in attendance at the stop with Zarvan Tumboli and Kalyan Chakravarthy, even making it among the 62 survivors that returned the final day. This time, however, the clashing APT Vietnam series resulted in Team India giving this event a skip altogether.

Day 2 of the 2019 Baby Dragon featured 72 returning players from a starting field of 593 entrants to claim a share of the ₩ 776,534,000 (~₹4.78 Crores) prize pool, with a min-prize worth ₩ 2,796,000 (~₹1.72 Lakhs).

Ultimately, Liu defeated fellow countryman Yunsheng Sun to win ₩142,940,000 (~₹87.98 Lakhs) following a heads-up chop. Sun took home ₩130,000,000 (~₹80 Lakhs) for his runner-up finish. This is Liu’s second APT event win as he had won Event #4: ₩330K PLO Hi event in May 2019 at Seoul for ₩2,037,000 (~₹1.25 Lakhs).

₩10M Super High Roller

The closing event at the PokerStars LIVE Asia Red Dragon taking place at the Jeju Shinhwa World went out with a roar with Bin Sun taking down the ₩10M Super High Roller for a ₩220,295,000 (~₹1.35 Crores) payday.

Forty-seven hopefuls from the initial 75 entries returned on Day 2, and with the format offering unlimited re-entries and late registrations, many like Hong Kong’s Ben Lai, China’s Ruihong Tao, Yifu Zhai, and the eventual winner Sun fired a second bullet. Several other players re-entered before the close of registration at the end of level 10 (the first level played at Day 2) to bring the total field up to 91 entries (70 unique).

It took thirteen grueling hours of play to crown a champion. The top honors were bestowed upon Sun, who defeated fellow countryman Yake Wu heads-up to win the event. Wu banked ₩153,087,000 (~₹94.24 Lakhs) for his runner up finish – his third cash of the series, having taken down the ₩1M Event #6 NLH Single Re-Entry and made a deep run in the ₩1M Event #9 NLH Knockout.

Sun’s win marks his third PokerStars LIVE title and fifth outright tournament title. This victory was also Sun’s third cash of the series, with the Chinese player having already final tabled the ₩5M Red Dragon High Roller where he finished fifth for ₩47,202,000(~₹29.05 Lakhs) – following that up with a 42nd place finish in the ₩1.5M Baby Dragon. Sun took home a cumulative ₩271,069,000 (~₹1.66 Crores) in total to move up to #111 on the China All-Time Money list from 258th position.

China’s Shenming Yin (10th for ₩17,839,000), Japan’s Jun Obara (11th for ₩17,839,000), and China’s Ye Wang (13th for ₩16,595,000) were other notables who finished in-the-money.
