The season-ending edition of the Deltin Poker Tournament (DPT) got off to a blistering start yesterday onboard the floating Casino Deltin Royale in Goa. The series-opener at the four-event stop, the ₹15K Deep Dive NLH logged in a total of 294 entries – a massive 50% increase over the 187 entries at the opening event at the last DPT series in February. Incidentally, this is the best opening the DPT has got since the July edition last year that saw seasoned pro Jasven Saigal topping a massive 326-entry field.

It took 8 hours and 19 levels of play for the starting field of 294 entries to whittle down to 26 runners. The healthy turnout helped generate a prize pool of ₹41.99 Lakhs, and the tournament organizers have decided to pay out the top 29 places.

The money bubble burst during the last level of play with the Asian-circuit regular Yasheel Doddanavar getting the infamous bubble boy tag. It took another three eliminations before the bags were brought out with well-known pro`s Dhaval Mudgal (29th for ₹30,500), & Adda52 Celebrity Pro Minissha Lamba (28th for ₹30,500) falling whiskers short of making it through to Day 2.

Bagging the overnight chip lead was Varun Vohra (597,000 – 37 BB’s) with Mitang Soni (558,000 – 34 bb’s) and Abhishek Sharma (514,000 – 32 bb’s) rounding out the top three stacks of the day.

Day 2 begins at 2pm today and promises to be an exciting affair with circuit regulars like Shravan Chhabria (477,000), Saumil Krishnani (371,000), Avinash Tauro (216,000), Sangeeth Mohan (203,000) and Deepak Raina (148,000) in contention.

The ₹15K NLH Bounty (4 pm) and the richest event at the stop, the Adda52 ₹65K High Roller (5 pm) also hit the floor today.

Competition Rising in River Mandovi

For the better part of these last few years, DPT has enjoyed a free reign with minimal competition from the other poker venues. The only worthy adversary was the Baadshah Live Tournament series, but given the venue superiority at the Deltin Royale, DPT kept always kept the upper hand.

There is little doubt that the past two years have helped DPT emerge as a well-recognized brand, but competition has arrived. In what is the start of a busy live poker season, we have four live stops lined up in Goa one after the other all the way through October. Deltin Royale seems to have identified the threat and has for the first time ever come out with a TDS Booster Bonus for the ongoing series. DPT is giving out a generous 50% TDS refund for all events at the DPT July edition with players getting this bonus in their respective Adda52 wallet. The bonus can be claimed by playing real money cash games on Adda52 with the bonus expiring on August 31. The same was announced by the Business Head of Poker at Delta Corp, Manish Adnani, just days before the live series was to commence. Because this was the first time that DPT/Adda52 has announced a TDS refund offer for its live stop, most players applauded the gesture. Some regulars were unhappy with the offer since this required tournament players to play cash games to release the bonus.

Well, at least the increasing competition has forced operators to become more player-friendly!

₹15K Deep Dive – Day 1

The DPT July edition got a strong opening with 294 entries joining the field on Day 1 easily surpassing the 187-entry mark from the last edition in February that saw bracelet winner and Adda52 Team Pro Nikita Luther taking down the opening event. While the defending champion was eliminated well before the day was over, 26 others managed to find a bag at the end of play where leading the charge is the relatively lesser-known player Varun Vohra.

The healthy turnout in the event helped generate a prize pool worth ₹41.99 Lakhs with the top 29 finishers assured a payday. While a min-cash is worth ₹30,500, there is an impressive ₹10 Lakhs set aside for the eventual champion and the front runner to take home a million bucks is Vohra who will start play on Day 2 with 597,000 in chips. He will have to work hard for the title though since the field still has several seasoned pros in the mix along with a lot of new talent.

Among the top stacks in the field is well-known tournament regular Shravan Chhabria (477,000). Recently back after playing an extended WSOP schedule that saw him cashing in five bracelet events, Chabbria is officially on home turf having shifting base to Goa from Mumbai post his marriage a few months ago.

DPT Xpress March Main Event fourth-place finisher Abhishek Sharma is also in the running alongside circuit regulars like Saumil Krishnani (371,000), Avinash Tauro (216,000), Sangeeth Mohan (203,000) and Deepak Raina (148,000).

The field was replete with notables like Adda52 Team Pro`s Kunal Patni, Nikita Luther & Minissha Lamba, PokerGuru Ambassador Jayjit Ray, Dhaval Mudgal, Sangeeth Mohan, Eka Vedantham, DPT February Main Event winner Ankit Kapoor, Meherzad Munsaf, Ramesh Rao Thotapalli, Masood Shaikh, Nishant Sharma, Vaibhav Shah, and Vidur Singhal to name just a few.

Among the early eliminations of the day were Shyam Jogi, Jayjit Ray, Bhuvan Bansal, Firoz Khan, and Yogesh Thakur. Defending champion Luther, Singhal, Vedantham, Munsaf, Thotapalli and Sharma also fell out well before the money bubble.

The bubble burst during the last level of play with Yasheel Doddanavar ending up becoming the last player to walk out empty-handed. Doddanavar has been a prominent face at several Asian stops this year. He first emerged onto the scene with a final table finish at WPT Vietnam in March where he final tabled the Deepstack Turbo event. Doddanavar then jumped into APPT Korea and made two final tables. Before his debut run at WSOP, Doddanavar finished runner up in the APT Philippines High Roller event. At the 50th annual WSOP, Doddanavar recorded four cashes with his best score coming from his 16th place finish in the $3K NLHE 6-Handed event for $18,352 (~₹12.69 Lakhs)!

In what is most likely Doddanavar`s debut appearance at the DPT, the London-based pro moved all-in with his short stack holding . Unfortunately for him, Samit Mehta woke up with pocket aces ending Doddanavar`s run in 30th place.

Seasoned pro and tournament regular Dhaval Mudgal became the first player to bust in the money, falling out in 29th place for ₹30,500. Mudgal announced all-in with , and Mitang Soni looked him up tabling pocket nines. Soni’s pocket pair held up eliminating the musician-turned-poker pro in 29th place.

Among the last few eliminations of the day was Adda52 Celebrity Pro Minissha Lamba (28th for ₹30,500) followed by another unknown player who went out at 27th place. With that, the 26 remaining players were asked to bag their stacks one last time.
