Delta Corp, the owners of multiple casinos in Goa are about to expand their gaming footprint in Sikkim. According to Glaws.in, Hotel WelcomHeritage Denzong Regency in Gangtok has received a license under the Sikkim Casinos (Control & Tax) Act, 2002 for a live casino. It is being reported that the gaming space would be leased out to Delta Corp, which would handle the management of the casino and its day-to-day operations.
While, Delta Corp refused to comment on the above, the signs had appeared way back in December 2015, when Hardik Dhebar, Group CFO had admitted in an interview that the company was seeking property in the North-eastern state. “Sikkim is another opportunity that one can look at. We can consider Sikkim because there already the casino licences are existing and one could explore the opportunity there,” he had said.
This had come about four months after Jaydev Mody, Chairman, Delta Corp had stated that Sikkim was difficult to access, but certainly an option in an interview to Business Today. “It is extremely difficult to get there (Sikkim). There is no clarity on when the new airport will be ready. But we will look at the opportunity at some point,” quoted Mody in the interview.
Reports state that the new airport will be ready only by 2017, however, the time certainly seems to be right for Delta to enter Sikkim given the positive sentiment towards gaming in the state with the recent passing of the Nagaland Online Games of Skill Bill.
Delta Corp is India’s largest and only publicly trading gaming company and already has two offshore and one onshore casino in Goa.
The company’s Deltin resort in Daman is ready and awaiting license to operate a huge 60,000 sq ft casino, styled by Las Vegas designers.
Sikkim is another state that allows legal gaming; besides being a picturesque holiday destination and it makes perfect business sense for Delta Corp to establish its next base in the state.
Casino Mahjong in the Mayfair resort and Casino Sikkim in Hotel Royal Plaza are the two other gaming venues in Sikkim. However, Hotel Denzong Regency is reported to be closest to Gangtok city and far more conveniently located next to the residences of the Governor (Raj Bhavan) and the Chief Justice of Sikkim.
The hotel, the only 5 Star luxury one in Gangtok, is a heritage property with a superb vista of Mt. Kanchenjunga and described on their website as situated “at a height of 6000 feet, situated within a 10 acre sprawling, century-old, wooded, family-owned property, which offers the finest views of the city and the pristine splendor of the undulating hills, valleys and a myriad streams that course through it.”
