The UK has always been at the forefront of legal gambling and regulated sports betting. There are a host of casinos in and around London, and the country even boasts of a rich legacy in poker. It is no surprise then that the UK has become the home ground for some of the biggest international tournaments.

While most will remember the Triton Poker Super High Roller Series last month that got all the media attention for its £1.05 Million buy-in ‘Triton Million – A Helping Hand For Charity.’ The eight-event series was held at the Hilton, Park Lane in London.

Poker Central has two stops lined up in the UK this month. The first of the two, the British Poker Open which is an exact replica of its prestigious counterpart, the US Poker Open is already underway. The series hit the Aspers Casino on September 2. Immediately after the British Poker Open, is Poker Central’s £250,000 buy-in Super High Roller Bowl London that begins at the same venue on September 13.

The opening event at the British Poker Open, the £10,000 No-Limit Hold ’em crowned a champion yesterday. While the series-opener could only muster a modest 26 entries, it was a star-studded lineup, and eventually, Canada’s Luc Greenwood (cover image) took down the title and the £119,600 first prize after defeating Steve O’Dwyer heads-up.

Luc, who is the brother of famous poker-playing brothers Sam Greenwood and Max Greenwood, boasts of a hugely successful poker career. The trio was last seen playing the $25,000 PokerStars Players NLHE Championship (PSPC) in January this year where impressively all three of them finished in the money!

Greenwood had a rough start in the tournament and was among the shorter stacks on Day 1. He came back stronger on Day 2 where he managed to bag the overnight chip lead with only five players remaining, and he did not relinquish his advantage till the very end.

Talking about his win, Greenwood later said, “I can’t remember the last time I won a tournament. The money is obviously top priority but getting the win is awesome.”

“This whole series has 10 events and there’s a nice big glass trophy for the eventual winner who gets the most points throughout the series. So, of course, starting out being on top of the leaderboard is a motivation to stay longer! I’m definitely playing the £10,000 Short Deck event but I can’t play the Super High Roller Bowl because I need to be back in Toronto,” he added.

The five remaining players returned on September 3 to play down to a winner. Greenwood was in the chip lead holding 746,000 in chips, while Sam Grafton (734,000) and Mike Watson (581,000) were the next top stacks.

Final Table Recap

There was a big £26.6K money bubble looming with only four out of the five remaining players assured a payday. In the end, Mike Watson earned himself the infamous bubble boy tag after falling at the hands of high-stakes cash game pro Robert Flink who turned a pair of kings cracking his ace-jack.

A few hands later, Sam Grafton moved all-in with only to run into Flink’s . O’Dwyer called it off with . It was three-way on the rundown that gave O’Dwyer a set booting a shocked Grafton out in fourth place.

O’Dwyer now had a stack of over 1,090,000 – almost 42% of the chips in play. Flink had managed to survive the hand after making a pair of kings and was left with 600,000 behind.

The other finalist Robert Flink who had entered the final table as the shortest stack had done well and spun up in contention. But Flink’s dream run ended rather abruptly after he lost a major chunk of his stack to O’Dwyer. In the next hand, Flink moved all-in with for 710,000 and found a caller in Greenwood who tabled . Flink managed to stay safe through the runout, but the on the river paired Greenwood, sending Flink out in third place.

The heads-up play saw Greenwood starting off with overwhelming chip lead holding 2.4 Million as against Steve O’Dwyer’s meager 200,000. Though O’Dwyer scored an early double-up, there was just so much he could do.

Before long, the final hand was dealt. O’Dwyer moved all-in preflop, and Greenwood called.

O’Dwyer was a huge favorite at the start of the hand, but Greenwood with such a massive chip lead was unperturbed. The flop didn’t help anyone, but the on the turn had Greenwood just one card away from victory. The on the river made it official, getting Greenwood his second career title!
