The ongoing British Poker Open that is now well underway at the Aspers Casino in Stratford, London saw its second tournament winding down to a winner on September 4. The £10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha fared slightly better than the series-opener £10,000 NLHE in terms of attendance as 30 hopefuls joined the action. After a two-day run, it was PLO specialist George Wolff (cover image) who came out on top, lifting his first-ever tournament trophy in the process.

Wolff came into the final table with a monstrous chip lead and rode past two of the toughest tournament players in the world, U.K’s All-Time Money list leader Stephen Chidwick and high-stakes beast Sam Soverel. It was the latter whom Wolff squared off with and defeated heads-up to win the title. Along with his first recorded live tournament title, Wolff also collected £120,000 in prize money.

“It was a really tough final table, as tough as any high stakes cash game. I had to play every spot very carefully,” Wolff said, after the event got over, adding, “Stevie played really well and Sam always plays really good but unpredictable. For the last eight or nine months, I’ve been playing more tournaments and it definitely feels really cool to win one.”

Day 1 began with 17 hopefuls hitting the felts, and soon the numbers grew. By the time the re-entry period got over, the field had expanded to 30 entries.

Many notables fell out empty-handed. Some elite players like Mike Watson, Jake Schindler, Keith Lehr, and Frank Kassela failed to secure a spot on the final table.

The two Greenwood brothers, Sam Greenwood and Luc Greenwood were also in the mix and while the former fell in 18th place, the £10K NLHE champion, Luc ended up hitting the rail in 10th place.

Cary Katz (9th), Ludovic Geilich (8th) and Anton Suarez (7th) were the last three players to fall before the bags were brought out on Day 1.

Once again there was a money bubble sweat with only five out of the six advancing players assured a slice of the £300,000 prize money. Wolff, however, was not one too worried about the bubble having bagged a large 1,722,000 stack, nearly double that of his next closest competitor Sam Soverel (878,000).

Final Table Recap

Finland’s online PLO legend Jens Kyllonen had come in as the shortest stack and ended up bubbling the tournament after falling to Sam Soverel in sixth place.

The next few eliminations came by quickly once the money bubble had burst.

Following Kyllonen to the rail was the only other Finn on the final table, Joni Jouhkimainen, with U.K’s Gavin Cochrane exiting in fourth place.

Three-handed play dragged along for almost two hours before Stephen Chidwick hit the rail. The British poker legend had become extremely short-stacked, but he got a whiff of hope after a much-needed double up from Wolff. The chips only took him so far as just a few hands later.

Chidwick defended with against Soverel’s . The flop saw both players make strong hands, with Chidwick hitting three-of-a-kind kings and Soverel completing a full house. Both of them checked through to the turn where Chidwick led out for 75,000 from his remaining 310,000. Soverel called it off. The landed on the river, and Chidwick fired a bet of 230,000 on which Soverel moved all-in. Chidwick had just one chip behind and put that in the pot, only to exit in third place.

The finale had the two American pros Sam Soverel, and George Wolff pitted against each other heads-up, and both had a decent shot at the title. Soverel started off with a slight advantage holding 2.125 Million against Wolff’s 1.625 Million, but within no time, the latter pulled ahead.

The last hand of the tournament dealt Soverel and Wolff . With 840,000 already in the pot preflop, Soverel moved all-in on the flop barring one chip – almost imitating Chidwick. Wolff raised all-in, and Soverel called by tossing in the one chip. Neither the turn or the river could bail Soverel out, and just like that, Wolff won his very first live tournament title!
