APL Da Nang: Kim Jae Hwan & Kwon Hyuk Jin Win Side Event Titles, 3 Indians Advance to Main Event Day 2

The Risemount Premier Resort in Da Nang, Vietnam, is currently playing host to its very first edition of the Asia Poker League (APL). While the last two days running, it has been the Main Event VND 8 Billion GTD that has been the biggest draw for players. Running alongside the Main Event were several side events, where we saw Korea’s Kim Jae Hwan and Kwon Hyuk Jin winning titles. Hwan took down the VND 8.8 Million No Limit Hold’em and netted VND 160,700,000, while Jin championed the VND 5.5 Million Hyper Turbo 2 to win VND 69,500,000 in prize money.

It was a glorious night for Team Korea overall. Not only did nine players from Korea, namely, Kim Jae Hwan, Kwon Hyuk Jin, Myeongjun Kim, Hyeon Kyeong Jeok, Leemin Wok, Lee Jong Wook, Kim Hak Do, Choi In Kyu, and Mei Kim, post final table finishes in the two side events, but seven other runners from the team including Woo Sung Kang, Im Hee Soo, Kim Gun Young, Yongdeok Kim, Lee Seok Young, Kim Jun Han, and Hojin Kim, bagged top stacks on Day 1C and 1D of the Main Event.

The Main Event clocked in a colossal field of 525 entries (Day 1A – 71, Day 1B – 126, Day 1C – 231 and Day 1D – 97), out of which only 134 hopefuls (Day 1A – 16, Day 1B – 23, Day 1C – 59 and Day 1D – 36) made the onward journey to Day 2. Day 1B chip leader Lin Jian (484,500) was the start of Day 2 chip leader, which began at 1 pm (local time) on December 17.

Three Indian contenders are in the running on Day 2, and these include Manish Lakhotia (275,000), APL Ambassador Sumit Sapra (231,500), and Vikas Sahni (48,000).

Day 1C Recap

Day 1C was the first of two starting flights that played out on December 16. It kicked off at 12.30 pm and registered 231 entries. Among them, only 59 qualified for Day 2.

Headlining the list of survivors was local player Dao Minh Phu who bagged a massive stack of 333,500. Tran Anh Trung (255,000) and Woo Sung Kang (252,000) bagged the next top stacks.

Day 1D Recap

The last and final starting flight of the Main Event, Day 1D, commenced at 5.30 pm and attracted 97 entries, taking the Main Event player pool to 525 entries. The advertised prize pool was successfully eclipsed as the Main Event collected VND 10,185,000,000 in the kitty.

Singapore’s Melvin Tay Yao Loon (266,500) topped the 36 Day 1D survivors.

A total of 134 runners made it through to Day 2 from all the four starting flights combined. Among the survivors were three Indian challengers,

Manish Lakhotia (275,000), APL Ambassador Sumit Sapra (231,500), and Vikas Sahni (48,000). While Lakhotia and Sapra qualified from Day 1A, Sahni progressed from one of the two flights yesterday.

The seventh event on the APL Da Nang roster, the VND 8.8 Million No Limit Hold’em, gathered 56 entries, creating a prize pool worth VND 434,600,000.

In the end, Korea’s Kim Jae Hwan defeated fellow compatriot Myeongjun Kim heads-up to pocket a top prize worth VND 160,700,000. Runner-up Kin banked VND 95,600,000.

Indian-origin player Dhanesh Chainani finished sixth for VND 26,100,000.

VND 5.5 Million Hyper Turbo 2

The second Hyper Turbo event at the series drew 35 entries, resulting in a prize pool collection of VND 169,800,000.

Team Korea was dominating the final table as four out of the five finalists were Korean. It came as no surprise when a Korean player took down the title. Kwon Hyuk Jin bested his fellow countryman Kim Hak Do heads-up to win VND 69,500,000, while Do banked VND 42,500,000 for his second-place finish.

Thailand’s Wasin Taneewattanakhborvon was the only non-Korean at the final table, and he finished fourth for VND 18,700,000.
