The 2019 Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) wrapped up the last leg of Season 10 on Sunday night (December 8) at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minnesota. Anthony Dunne (cover image) was crowned the champion in the $1,100 Main Event, and he pocketed the first-place prize worth $155,288.

The MSPT has a lot of history at the Canterbury Park that had played host to the first-ever MSPT stop a decade ago. Since then, the MSPT has hosted 162 Main Events across the country and recently awarded a milestone $100 million in prize money.

The 2019 series also saw Mike Shin winning the MSPT Player of the Year race. Shin made 11 MSPT cashes this year, including a win at the MSPT Majestic Star back in January for $68,593 and finishing third in the MSPT Venetian for $334,000.

Last year the Season 9 Finale Main Event was taken down by Andy Rubinberg, who had bested a 997-strong field to take down what remains to-date the largest poker tournament held in Minnesota for $179,776.

This is the 18th time that the MSPT has held a Main Event at Canterbury Park. The Main Event cruised past its $500K GTD by bringing together 802 entries (172 Day 1A, 263 Day 1B, and 367 Day 1C) over three starting flights that culminated in a prize pool collection of $776,940.

Dunne defeated a star-studded final table that included three former MSPT champions – two of them also happened to be former Player of the Year winners. He eventually defeated Rich Alsup (runner-up for $95,502) heads-up to claim the title along with a six-figure score.

Day 2 began with 102 survivors (20 Day 1A, 34 Day 1B, and 51 Day 1C), but with only 81 places paid, several among them had to depart empty-handed. Some of them were Minnesota Poker Hall of Famer Kou Vang, former MSPT Grand Falls champion Ahmed Taleb, and the money bubble Brian Zupancich.

Others who were lucky enough to cross the money bubble but still fell short of the final table included Day 1B chip leader Phil Mader (15th for $9,318), former MSPT Canterbury Park champion Jonathan Kim (16th for $7,764), Rob Wazwaz (20th for $6,522), Luke Vrabel (26th for $4,503), Brandon Temple (27th for $4,503), WSOP bracelet winner Derek McMaster (32nd for $3,416), MSPT Season 10 POY Mike Shin (35th for $3,416), Day 1A chip leader Bill Kachel (40th for $2,873), Jeff Petronack (44th for $2,873), Michael Wolff (63rd for $2,485), Day 1C chip leader John Reading (65th for $2,329), and Craig Trost (78th for $2,174).

By the time the ten-handed final table was formed, it was Ian Matakis who was sitting in the chip lead holding a stack of 2,580,000, followed by Yevgeniy Minakrin (2,330,000) and Steve Wilkie (2,130,000). The eventual champion Anthony Dunne entered the final table placed seventh in chips with 1,427,500.

Final Table Recap

The two short stacks – Peter Kuretsky and Chan Pelton – were the first two players to fall out in places tenth and ninth, respectively.

Post the first break on the final table, Ian Matakis got knocked out in a battle between blinds. Matakis moved all-in holding from the big blind while Anthony Dunne limp-called with from the small blind and held.

Soon after that, short-stacked Yevgeniy Minakrin was eliminated by Josh Damm in seventh place.

Andrew Johnson was the next one out after pushing all-in with . He was looked up by Anthony Dunne’s ladies that held.

From there, Josh Damm was the next casualty in fifth place. On the flop , Damm’s were chasing Rich Alsup’s – but with no further improvements, Damm busted.

After a short lull, the action picked back up with the elimination of Steve Wilkie (winner of the 2019 MSPT Denver Main Event) in fourth place. On the board open , Wilkie moved all-in with for a flush draw. Rich Alsup check-called with for top pair. Wilkie failed to complete his flush and exited.

The heads-up play was set in motion with the elimination of Aaron Johnson in third place. Aaron Johnson’s got terribly unlucky against Anthony Dunne’s when the dealer dropped a jack on the river.

Dunne entered the heads-up play with a 2:1 chip lead over Rich Alsup (MSPT Season 6 POY winner) and further pulled ahead before finally ending Alsup’s run. The final hand saw Alsup’s in good shape against Dunne’s before two jacks on the turn and the river, respectively, gave Dunne trips.
