June 18 was a productive day for Team India at the 50th annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) on several counts starting with Ashish Ahuja deep run in Event #34: $1,000 Double Stack No-Limit Hold’em, to Sajal Gupta and Aditya Sushant’s in-the-money finish in Event #40: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha. However, there was another event that witnessed many Indians in action – Event #42: $600 Mixed NL Hold’em/PL Omaha Deepstack 8-Handed.

The event registering 2,403 entries on Day 1, creating a prize pool of $1,261,575, and had at least eight Indians turn up to contest for the top prize of $194,759 and the coveted gold bracelet. Four Indians were left standing after the Day 1 proceedings had culminated, along with 191 other survivors.

Raghav Bansal accumulated the biggest stack of 723,000 among the Indian contingent, which also happens to be the 18th largest stack heading into Day 2. PokerGuru Ambassadors Kartik Ved (462,000) and Ashish Ahuja (458,000), along with Yudhishter Jaswal (302,000), will be joining Bansal on Day 2.

Though Raghav may have topped the Indian battalion in terms of chip counts, the real showstopper for the day was Ahuja. After a great run in the $1K Double Stack NLHE, where the WSOP debutant narrowly missed bagging India’s first solo bracelet due to some crucial hands that he lost under unfortunate circumstances, he jumped right into the $600 Mixed NLHE/PLO Deepstack and is yet again looking to post a deep run. With the money bubble already breached, the four Indians who will return for Day 2 are assured of a min-cash of $1,198 (~₹83,431).

Romit Advani, Nishant Sharma, Paawan Bansal, and Nipun Java had also tried their luck in this event. While Advani (223rd for $1,198 – ₹83,431) and Sharma (299th for $961 – ₹66,926) finished in the money, Paawan and Java hit the rail empty-handed.

The 195 Day 1 survivors will be led by chip leader Adam Lamphere (1,870,000) when Day 2 commences at 12 PM (Pacific Time Zone) on June 19.
