Flutter Entertainment Makes a Power Play in India: PokerStars India & Junglee Poker Player Pools Merge in a Bid For Market Dominance

In a surprise move that reverberated through the Indian online poker community, Flutter Entertainment, the global gaming giant, boldly merged the player pools of its two India-facing poker brands – PokerStars India and Junglee Poker. On March 6, the move manifested as a complete platform overhaul for PokerStars India players, as the familiar PokerStars client was replaced as a skin on Junglee Poker’s platform.

This merger marks a significant step towards Flutter Entertainment’s ambitious goal of becoming the undisputed market leader in India’s booming online poker scene.

Understanding Flutter’s Strategy

Let’s rewind to understand the significance of this merger:

2018: PokerStars India launches in partnership with Sachiko Gaming Pvt. Ltd, abandoning the international client to establish a presence in India’s ring-fenced market with an India-exclusive offering.

2019: Flutter Entertainment merges with The Stars Group (parent company of PokerStars), solidifying its position as the world’s largest online gaming entity and raising questions about its plans for the Indian market.

2021: Flutter acquires a controlling stake in Junglee Rummy, recognizing the brand’s massive Indian user base and dominance in online rummy and presence in the high-value fantasy sports space (Howzat).

This strategic consolidation aims to unify PokerStars India’s strong reputation among dedicated poker players with Junglee Poker’s considerable reach and extensive traffic (peaking at over 1,000 active players) fueled by its aggressive marketing presence on TV, OTT and social media. The goal is clear: market dominance in India’s rapidly expanding online poker landscape.

Exclusive Insights: Flutter’s Vision For India

We dug deep to uncover Flutter’s ambitious goals, revealing a strong focus on product localisation, the launch of India-focused game formats, and a clear strategy to become the undisputed leader in India’s poker market.

In an in-depth conversation with Kapil Arora, AVP of Poker Business for PokerStars India and Junglee Poker, crucial questions regarding this merger were addressed.

Kapil Arora
Kapil Arora

Arora clarified the seeming secrecy: “We had multiple rounds of communication regarding this app update, though not specifically calling it a merger. It’s really about Flutter’s vision for real-money gaming in India. Junglee has been the brand facilitating this dream, and PokerStars was always part of the plan. Now, they’re joining forces to become bigger and better together.”

He acknowledged the initial transition challenges but emphasized their commitment: “This is a significant change, and we know players need time to adapt. We’re working hard to resolve any initial issues and deliver on our promise to build a superior poker experience for Indian players.”

Flutter’s Plan: Growth, Unmatched Offers, and Clear #1 Spot

Arora outlined Flutter’s vision: “India’s poker market is booming, and we intend to be at the forefront of that growth. This merger offers exciting opportunities. Expect increased liquidity, an expanded range of promotions, new game formats, and upgrades blending global standards with the features Indian players value most.

He emphasized Flutter’s commitment to the Indian poker market: “The game is growing at the CAGR of 25%; we want to ensure that we are a part of this growth story. We have our eyes on the clear #1 spot in the poker industry. From the moment this merger was made, our promise is to give our users a great experience and push the business forward.”

Key points addressed by Arora include:

Interface: “Visual customization and improvements are high priority. We’ll tailor the look and feel while making sure it offers effortless navigation for the Indian market.”

Offers: “Promotions will be a major focus. Expect shared and brand-exclusive benefits on both platforms, ensuring every player, from casual to competitive, feels the value.”

Rake: “Tournament and cash game rake will remain competitive. Flutter will continue to shoulder the 28% GST burden, demonstrating a commitment to maximizing player value, although a few flagship tournaments may attract a 15% rake in the future.

Star Coins: “Players’ Star Coins and balances have been seamlessly converted to real cash. Support at support@pokerstars.in is available for any outstanding issues.”

Promotions: “We will be bringing back PokerStars India attractions like Diwali Rush and Micro Millions alongside fresh offerings and leaderboards. Stay tuned for updates on how these will be integrated into the new platform and many more new promotions on both PokerStars India and Junglee Poker.”

The Road Ahead: Challenges, Opportunities, and a Shifting Landscape

Understandably, this merger has caused a stir. It’s a high-stakes play with potentially huge rewards, but the path is not without its challenges.

Arora openly acknowledged the initial hiccups but assured that they would be ironed out and the overall experience would soon exceed expectations. The focus on delivering an unmatched experience is evident.

The Right Tech Stack: Junglee’s Agility

The choice of Junglee’s platform holds the key to quick customization. Arora explains that its newer, adaptable technology allows for rapid, India-specific upgrades – essential for delivering a superior experience.

“The Junglee Poker tech stack is relatively new and has more advanced technology. Using Junglee Poker’s tech stack instead of PokerStars India’s was because Junglee Poker’s tech stack is more new-age and is better suited to the Indian market and therefore easier to customize and upgrade.”

Interface Evolution: Designed For India

While the initial visual style for the new PokerStars India client leans towards the earlier aesthetics, Arora promises significant customization of the user experience (UX) to better resonate with Indian players.

“The UI in terms of the colours, themes, skin, card animations, fonts, etc., have remained the same on PokerStars India. The UX will be customized and localized for Indian users in the coming days.”

Guarding the Game: Integrity and Security

For Flutter Entertainment, ensuring a secure and fair gaming experience is paramount. PokerStars India’s transition to Junglee Poker’s platform brings significant advantages in this area, with PokerStars’ global expertise further bolstering Junglee’s existing strong capabilities to deliver an even more robust game integrity system for Indian players. A safe and fair playing environment is non-negotiable.

“As far as knowledge-sharing and game integrity is concerned, PokerStars India will further strengthen Junglee Poker’s existing security module, assuring players and the safest gaming experience we are known to be market leaders in the industry.”

Player Pools United, Strategies Divergent

Despite a shared player pool, both PokerStars India and Junglee Poker will retain distinct brand voices and marketing approaches, targeting different segments within the growing poker audience.

“There will be very different brand tonality and marketing strategy for both the brands. Both brands will co-exist in its own way. We will have different marketing and strategies going forward.”

Player Value: The Core Promise

Flutter’s commitment to player value remains a focal point, including keeping the significant 28% GST burden off the players’ shoulders. Arora promises the return of Daily Leaderboards, attractive rakeback, and enticing deposit offers. He assures competitive rake structures with the possibility of some adjustments for flagship tournaments in the future, clarifying that the controversial pre-flop rake will only apply to 3-bet/4-bet pots, aligning with standard practice in the Indian market.

“The liquidity is shared. The offers and promotions are also kind of shared, but we will customize them for the two brands. Both brands will get different treatment. There will be some common offerings and a few very different offerings for both brands.”

Flutter’s Gamble: The Indian Poker Landscape Transformed

Flutter’s bold move has undeniably raised the stakes of the Indian online poker industry. This merger signals their intent to dominate a rapidly expanding market.

They have upped the ante, and only time will tell if the gamble will pay off, but one thing is sure – the future of Indian poker is about to get a lot more interesting.

Sushant Sirohi, Samyak Sethi, Vikhyat Ahlawat, and Vinay B Deliver Standout Performances on a Sunday Overshadowed by Cricket Fever

This past Sunday saw a historic repeat of the World Cup final clash between two cricket behemoths – India and Australia. While a chance at redemption after two decades and a third World Cup victory eluded India, the allure of this much-anticipation climatic showdown made for a much calmer Sunday grind across the major poker platforms.

Amidst this cricket frenzy, many platforms, like Spartan Poker, PokerStars India, and Pocket52, rightfully cancelled their weekend headliners. PokerBaazi’s planned The MoneyMaker was also put on hold.

Amid the glaring absence of tournaments, PokerBaazi’s sixth edition of the ₹5+ Crores GTD The 1000X Series offered a semblance of the thrilling action that Sundays are notorious for. However, with lower turnouts across platforms, exceptions were few. Looking ahead, the 1000X Series continues to ride high through the week while A23 Poker will be closing out its epic 5 Crores GTD Mega Freeroll Series, with the concluding 25th ₹20 Lakhs Mega Freeroll slated for 8 PM tonight.

Sushant Sirohi was the dominating batsman on Sunday`s poker pitch. He stood out in PokerBaazi’s 1000X#12 Sunday Prime, claiming his maiden 1000X title and securing a career-best 4.51 Lakhs. The runner-up ‘darkknight7‘ took home ₹3.52 Lakhs, their second-highest prize on PokerBaazi.

‘Saiupp1987’ marked a significant victory in the Adda52 Millions, bagging a personal best 5.87 Lakhs. Samyak Sethi collected 4.34 Lakhs for second place, his highest score on Adda52 and third-best this year.

Vikhyat Ahlawat, one of November`s top performers, returned to the forefront in PokerBaazi’s 1000X#13, seizing his maiden 1000X title and 2.62 Lakhs. Ahlawat’s day saw two more 1000X cash-outs, pushing his day`s total to 2.75 Lakhs. Kapil Arora secured the runner-up prize of 1.96 Lakhs.

Vinay B continued his strong November run with a victory in Adda52’s Sunday Showdown, pocketing ₹2.56 Lakhs and ending the day with ₹2.68 Lakhs from three finishes. ‘iamluckbox‘ earned ₹2.32 Lakhs from a heads-up deal.

Mirroring Travis Head`s match-winning innings last night, Chetraj Mishra broke an extended 18-month title drought by conquering PokerBaazi’s 1000X#11, adding 2.17 Lakhs to his Sunday total of 2.20 Lakhs.

Sagar Maheshwari was another Sunday standout. Adding to his string of recent wins, he championed 1000X#9 Sunday Kickoff, securing a winner’s prize of ₹1.81 Lakhs following a heads-up deal with Aishwary Sharma, who raked in a better ₹2 Lakhs as the runner-up.

Amar Iyer also kept his sails high by emerging victorious in PokerBaazi’s 1000X#10, securing 1.01 Lakhs after a four-way deal, tallying at least 1.52 Lakhs from three known finishes.

Sanyam Jain triumphed in PokerStars India’s Sunday Slam, pocketing 68,418.

Sandeep Varma RS and Ayush Jaiswal won the other Sunday marquees.
