This Week in Poker: July 24 – 30
In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker’ we bring you the weekly roundup of the biggest online scores by Indian MTT players along with the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit.
Here are this week’s top stories
The last few days have brought with them announcements that promise to revive the “Golden Era” of live poker in Goa. While the writing was on the wall when the top three online brands took over live poker rooms onboard the offshore casinos in Goa, it was only last week that we saw the plans pan out. Both BPT (Casino Pride 2) and IPC (Big Daddy Casino) announced stops as a result of which Indian poker players now have a major live series to play in Goa every month till October. The cards are already in the air at the Deltin Royale poker room with the last DPT of 2019 officially underway. The four-event series will run all through August 5, and we will be posting tournament updates daily.
While we’re still talking about Goa, the state Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant made a significant announcement on Monday concerning the casino industry. Sawant confirmed that the upcoming international airport in Mopa will house casinos as part of integrated resorts, putting to rest (at least partially) speculations around the relocation of offshore casino presently moored on the Mandovi River. But while the relocation news itself was a cause of celebration for the industry, Sawant`s added caveat that only airline passengers would have access to casinos, spoiled the party.
If live tournament action has been enthusing, the online felts back home haven’t lacked at belting out big winners. Last weekend belonged to a 20-year-old Bengaluru poker player Srihari Bang who enjoyed the run of a lifetime in the weekend-majors. He rose to the top of a massive 2,842-entry field in the IOPC Millionaire to win a career-best ₹48.56 Lakhs. That was not all; as in his Sunday grind that lasted almost 14 hours, he took down another major, this time the Sunday Special PKO on PokerStars India for ₹2.85 Lakhs. Bang`s Saturday scores included winning the Upper Cut on PokerStars India and another final-table finish in an IOPC event. In total, Bang took home a life-changing ₹54.35 Lakhs last weekend! No points for guessing that he is our “PokerGuru Star of the Week.”
Upcoming poker site Uma Poker had a busy weekend as well as its flagship USOP series closed out another smashing run. US-based Anchit ‘allin’ Agarwal was the biggest Sunday winner on the site as he bested the 358- player field (268 unique entries and 90 re-entries) in the USOP Main Event to win ₹8.40 Lakhs.
Moving back to live tournament action, we have a good number of Indians in the mix at the ongoing Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) Manila and the team has done well so far. After a career shaping run last year, Sahil Agarwal is back at a stop he knows well and has found early success already. He finished runner-up in the PHP 55K Deepstack NLHE for PHP 530,100 (~₹7.15 Lakhs), the best score for the team yet. Worth pointing out that bracelet winners Iyer and Sushant are both present at the stop having flown in after attending the WPT Gardens Poker Festival $5,000 Main Event.
As July comes to an end, the richest poker tournament in history, the Triton Poker Super High Roller Series London is set to take the Hilton hotel in London by storm. Just two days back, billionaire poker player Bill Perkins is reported to have confirmed his attendance in the £1 Million buy-in event, bringing the list of confirmed attendees at this historical event to 50 runners!
If Triton promises high-stakes action, also on the international poker map for August are the partypoker MILLIONS Europe (Aug 5-8) at Rozvadov and 888poker LIVE Sochi (Aug 8-15).
