Zynga Poker: Introduction to Online Poker   Back

Zynga Poker on Facebook is by far the most popular poker platform in India today. The question here is whether it is the best?

Are you a casual player who enjoys the constant news feed and competition with friends and family for a top rank in chips? If yes, then maybe Facebook poker is a great application for you. However, for all you poker enthusiasts who have mastered the poker rules of the game and are eager to improve your skill in poker, a much better applications for Poker exist. As a beginner in online poker, apart from playing on Facebook, we recommend users to try some popular online gaming sites like Pokerstars, 888Poker and Fulltilt Poker. You have the option to learn the software features for free using play money or participating in freerolls.  Freerolls are great for beginners - along with mastering your poker skills, you get a chance to build your bankroll for free. More details on bankroll management for those players deciding on starting their online poker career is available at First Steps in Poker under Bankroll Management.

How exactly is the game on these sites different from Facebook when the game offered on both these platforms is the same?

Well the difference lies in the skill level of the players on the online poker sites. While Zynga Poker on Facebook is a more casual application for beginners to learn the Texas holdem poker rules of the game and interact/play with friends and family, Poker rooms like Pokerstars, Full Tilt Poker and 888 is a good next step for players who have mastered the rules and are looking at improving their game. An attractive feature on online poker sites is the observe feature where beginners can watch and learn from the Top Pros playing at high stakes (Millions of dollars) and in competitive fields!

In addition, a major hindrance with Facebook poker has been the introduction of the “Bingo” style of play. Ever since Zynga started selling chips, which are presently being sold for as much as USD 125 for 180M chips, an unofficial market for exchange of chips was created. Many players in a bid to make some money have adopted the “Bingo” style where they simply shove all in with a small chip stack of 10-15 big blinds with almost any 2 cards hoping to outdraw the few callers. The common presence of players using this extremely unprofitable play in the long run makes the online poker game annoying at times. Also, the chip transactions were relatively easier in beginning when players were allowed to simply send chips to each other. Following complaints and getting wind of these transactions Zynga capped the transfer limit to 500,000 chips. This has made these transfers more difficult and most transfers now take place when one player willingly looses and hence effectively shifts his chips to the buyer. Zynga still does occasionally freeze accounts for suspicious play and works to stop such transfers but they are widespread. The play is also very abrupt with most players switching tables often, which hinders continuity in the game and even good players do not get time to get reads on weaker opponents.

We suggest beginners to download a popular online poker room e.g. Pokerstars, Fulltilt , 888 etc and try the play money interface or simply take part in PokerGuru Freerolls to build an online bankroll for free. We are sure you will not look back!
