WSOP 2018: Joey Couden Takes Down Event #53 – $1,500 PLO Hi-Lo 8 or Better For $244,370

The three-day long Event #53: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better at the 2018 World Series of Poker (WSOP) was taken down by Joseph ‘Joey’ Couden (cover image). Along with his maiden WSOP gold bracelet, Couden also pocketed the top prize of $244,370.

It certainly wasn’t an easy win for Couden who had to fight off competition from the likes of Daniel Negreanu, Mike Matusow and Eli Elezra on the final table!

Having cashed at the WSOP 48 times, Couden has accumulated earnings of $398,917. When asked about all the near misses at the WSOP this year, Couden said, “I felt pretty good all summer. Just wanted to stay focused. As long as I don’t make any mistakes, I feel fine where I bust, it’s variance.”

Among our Indian challengers, Aditya ‘Bitti’ Agarwal had made it through to Day 2 in the event with a stack of 10,300 but he busted before the money bubble.

Final Day Recap

Out of the 20 runners who started Day 3, 12 were eliminated before the unofficial final table was reached and the list included Bryce Yockey (11th for $13,429), Robert Campbell (12th for $13,429), Mihails Morozovs (13th for $10,603), Sergio Benso (14th for $10,603), Quinn Do (15th for $10,603) and Garrett Garvin (16th for $8,503).

Final Table Recap

After defending champion Nathan Gamble and Daniel Negreanu’s elimination in tenth and ninth place respectively, the next player to bust the final table was Dustin Pattinson. He called from the button and Joey Couden potted from small blind. Pattinson tanked for 20 seconds and went all-in with . Couden called holding . The flop gave Pattinson two pairs of sixes and threes, while Couden was drawing to a club flush. With on the turn and on the river, Couden rivered a flush eliminating Pattinson in seventh place.

Next up,Conrad opened for 150,000 under-the-gun, prompting Kim Kallman to move all-in with 375,000. Bruno Fitoussi 4-bet the pot and Conrad moved all-in with his remaining stack. The board ran and Conrad flopped a flush with . Fitoussi’s helped him win the low-pot with Conrad, while Kallman’s got him evicted from the final table at sixth place.

Soon thereafter, Christopher Conrad raised the pot from under-the-gun holding . Eli Elezra double-raised with and Conrad went all-in. The runout missed both players and Elezra took down the pot eliminating Conrad in fifth place.

Finishing in fourth place was high stakes player Mike Matusow. Fitoussi limped in from under-the-gun with and Matusow 3-bet shoved with . Fitoussi called and the community showed . Fitoussi nutted on both sides and Matusow went on to collect the fourth place prize money.

The next elimination hand saw the remaining three players put in the minimum to see the flop . Couden with then bet 100,000, Fitoussi folded, while three-time bracelet winner Eli Elezra with moved all-in. Couden called and the remaining streets and brought Couden a wheel ending Elezra’s deep run in third place.

On the final hand of the day, Bruno Fitoussi went all-in preflop and was snap-called by Couden. Fitoussi’s hole cards gave him the lead with pocket kings, while Couden held . On the lookout for an Ace, Couden’s prayers were answered on the flop . With the turn and the river doing little to further Fitoussi`s cause, Couden lapped up his first WSOP bracelet!.
