Event #49: $5,000 No-Limit Hold’em

After 11 prior WSOP cashes to his credit, 28-year-old, David Miscikowski finally succeeded in bagging his first piece of WSOP hardware in Event 49.

Miscikowski came to the WSOP felt with a solid experience in both live and online poker, and incidentally this was his first final table of the summer. It was not only an epic heads-up between Miscikowski and Norbert Szecsi, but also a tough final table in one of the more stacked fields at this edition of WSOP.

Currently residing in Costa Rica, Miscikowski increased his total live earnings by nearly four and half times, to over $900K by posting his best live cash till date in this event. No doubt Miscikowski was estatic after the win and commented, “It feels great. This is one of the biggest sweats I’ve ever had, it feels nice to come through.

The final table included players from four different countries and it wasn’t an easy line up. Five out of the nine final tablists had been on a WSOP final table before and two among them were bracelet winners.

Miscikowski was in good shape before the final table with the chip lead, and further added to his stack by eliminating Jean Gaspard in seventh place, his first elimination on the final table.

However, it wasn’t smooth sailing for Miscikowski who got below 20 big blinds on more than once occasion on the final table. Going into the heads-up match, Norbert Szecsi held a 2:1 chip lead with 7.3 million in chips to Miscikowski’s 3.1 million.

Contrary to expectations, the big chip differential hardly mattered as the heads-up match spread across two days. The two finalists bagged Day 3 with Miscikowski, also known as “DonkCommitted” online, overcoming the huge chip deficit to end the day with a slight chip lead.

After a longer than expected heads-up match, it was eventually in level 32 when the champion was crowned. On the final hand, Norbert Szecsi shoved for 3.865 million and David Miscikowski called. Szecsi tabled pocket fours, while Miscikowski held pocket sevens. With no help on the board, Szecsi was eliminated in second place and Miscikowski walked away with his first gold bracelet and the $719,707 first-place prize.
