In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker’ we bring to you the weekly round up of the biggest online scores by Indian MTT players along with the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit.

Here are this week`s top stories

Temperatures and palpitations increased at a hectic rate this week, but no one was complaining. APPT 9 Macau reached its exciting finale, at the other end of the globe, the big-daddy of all tournaments, WSOP took off with players from all over racing with dreams of the Gold Bracelet in their eyes.

In this week’s edition of TWIP, we bring you all the details of the APPT 9 Macau’s final moments. Several Indian players such as Aditya Agarwal, Rajeev Raut, Kunal Patni were in the fray for a big win. The biggest success story, however, was Indian origin player Shashank Rathi, who made HK $1,124,000 from his 3rd place finish in the HK $100,000 High Roller Event.

We also bring you news of the world’s most anticipated tournament, the WSOP, which will fill these spaces with daily events the next two months, right till the Main Event final table on Tuesday July 14. This year too, a large Indian contingent is expected to stake their claim in the international poker ground.

WSOP’s new Colossus event made records for a humongous crowd, besides stirring up a controversy for its rake and top prize percentage. Both, Aditya Agarwal and Maurice Noronha played this historic event. Maurice was the first Indian to make the money in the series and finished 1310th for $2,315.

Besides all the live action, there was much happening on the online felts too, with many 1st place finishes and final table scores. Jasven Saigal is our “PokerGuru Star of the Week” for his score of $13,911 for 1st place at PokerStars, ‘The Big $55, $80K GTD’.

The coming week promises to sustain the pace. The next edition of the IPC is set to hit Goa on June 3 and as always, the PokerGuru crew will be onsite to bring you all the live coverage, so stay tuned for all the updates….

 

Online Railbird Report

Numerous scores dotted an entire week that saw large online traction; Friday was one of the most fruitful days for our online players, with three big scores. Several players won tournaments, with the top most being Jasven Saigal who claimed the PokerStars ‘The Big $55, $80K GTD’ for $13,911 and is our “PokerGuru Star of the Week“.

Arsh Grover won the PokerStars ‘The Big $75, $30K GTD’ for $7,809.42 and Shashank Jain finished 6th in the PokerStars $1,050 Thursday Thrill for $9,477.50!

Below are some other notable scores this past week:

Sahil ‘antilog’ Agarwal made two impressive finishes on the same day. He first finished 2nd in the PokerStars ‘$33 NL Hold’em [6-Max, Turbo], $7K GTD’ for $1,666.17. Sahil also made $2,527.10 for 3rd place in the PokerStars ‘$27 NL Hold’em [Turbo, Knockout], $18K GTD – Sunday Edition’.

Jaideep ‘jdsaz’ Sajwan was another with two cashes on PokerStars. He finished 2nd in the ‘$13.50 NL Hold’em [Knockout], $10K GTD’ for $1,285.70. Jaideep also made $1,047.31 for 3rd place in the PokerStars ‘$5.40 NL Hold’em [Turbo, Knockout], $12.5K GTD’.

Shyam ‘shyam90000’ Shahani too pocketed two cashes. One for $1,020.60 for 5th place in the PokerStars ‘$51 NL Hold’em [Hyper-Turbo], $12K GTD’ and the other for a 3rd place in the PokerStars ‘$82 NL Hold’em [Turbo], $7.5K GTD’ making $1,655.40.

Karan Radia made $1,760.89 in the PokerStars ‘$54 NL Hold’em [Knockout], $10K GTD’.

Sabyasachi ‘Infusion_leo’ Chakraborty won $1,475.60 for 6th place in the PokerStars ‘$11+R NL Hold’em, $20K GTD’.

Online enthusiasts will also have the upcoming AOPS to look forward to. The PokerStars Asian Online Poker Series (AOPS), exclusively for players from this region begins June 5 and runs till the June 14, with $80,000 in guaranteed prizes, spread over 10 events.

With an attractive range of buy-ins, nightly freerolls, satellites and more, the AOPS promises to up the action further.

Moving on to our other news roundup, we begin with a recap of WSOP…

 

WSOP 2015

The 46th WSOP took off on May 27 and is now into its 9th event. A number of our Indian players will be making WSOP this year, with Aditya Agarwal already present and having participated in the two events i.e. the $565 Colossus and Event 6 – $1K Hyper Turbo.

Event 1 – $565 Casino Employees No-Limit Hold’em

688 players lined up for Event 1, leading to a prize pool of $344,000. Brandon Barnette won the event for $75,704. Greg Seiden was runner up and pocketed $46,000.

Event 2 – $5000 NLH

A field of 422 players created a prize pool of $1,983,400. Mike Wang beat popular pro Bryn Kenney to win this event, pocketing the top prize of $466,120. Kenney made a 2nd place finish for $287,870.

Event 3 – $1500 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better

Event 3 saw Robert Mizrachi winning his 3rd WSOP bracelet for $255,022, after beating Jacob Dahl in heads up play. Dahl made $155,333 for his 2nd place finish.

The event had a prize pool of $1,239,300, with top 117 players from the entry field of 918 making the money.

 

Event 4 – $3000 No Limit Hold’em Shootout

Nick Petrangelo won his first WSOP bracelet as well as $201,812 in Event 4. The event also saw veteran actor James Woods make his first final table finish.

308 entries formed a prize pool of $840,840, with the top 40 places paid.

 

Event 5 – $565 Colossus $5,000,000 GTD

The debut Colossus event shattered records for its player field of 22,374 over 4 entry-flight days. With a smallest ever WSOP buy-in, this event became its largest one. Long lines could be seen at the Rio All Suites Casino for already bought online-registrations. For most, it was a golden opportunity of having played a WSOP event.

The event was a gargantuan battlefield with pros and casual players in a mad rush to make the money bus of 2241 top finishes.

As we publish this, there are 39 players left for tomorrow, with Ray Henson leading with 7420,000 chips.

Aditya Agarwal made it to Flight D of the Colossus, but was eliminated. Maurice Noronha made it to Day 2, and claimed a small cash of $2,315 for his 1310th finish.

The Colossus will also be remembered for the controversy over its rake and top prize. Players took to social media to air their anger about the small percentage kept for the winner and the large rakes. WSOP on its part refuted the claims.

Event 6 – $1000 Hyper Hold’em

Aditya Agrawal participated in Event 6, however, he was eliminated on the opening day. In a truly filmy style, fast and furious final table, John Reading won the event, pocketing $252,068 in prize money, plus his first WSOP bracelet.

In all 1,436 entries created a prize pool of $1292,400. The top 144 players made the money.

APPT 9 Macau

Indian players were busy leaving their mark at the APPT 9 this year. Several cashes were made. In Event 5 – $15,000 NLH, Team PokerStars pro Aditya Agarwal was unable to make it beyond the first day. Kunal Patni final tabled this event.

Hong Kong’s Yat Cheng won his first title at the HK $25,000 Main Event for HK $2,525,000 (US$325,659).

Along with Team PokerStars Pro Aditya Agarwal, several other Indian players participated on Day 1A, however none made it through. Manish Boyat was the only one to last till Day 2, where he too busted short of the money.

Rajeev Raut made a deep run in the HK $50,000 Event, but was eliminated in 16th place, without reaching the money.

Indian origin player, Shashank Rathi made a terrific 3rd place finish at the HK $100,000 High Roller event for HK $1,124,000. China’s Liang Yu won the HK $100,000 High Roller for HK $2,492,500 and the silver trophy.

APPT Announces ACOP 2015 and MPC Schedules

The live action will continue, with the schedules announced for MPC 23 and the 2015 ACOP.

The MPC 23 will run from Aug 28 and the ACOP from Oct 30. The Red Dragon Main event will highlight the MPC and at the ACOP it will be the HK$100,000 (USD $13,000) buy-in Main Event.

David Kluchman Wins WSOP Circuit Foxwoods Resort Main Event

David Kluchman’s two bullet ride into the last Main Event of the WSOP Circuit at Foxwoods Resort proved a wise investment, as he won the title for $124,370. The event had 376 players battling three days for a prize pool of $565,315.

PokerStars Signs Cristiano Ronaldo

In another sportsperson-poker brand tie-up, Cristiano Ronaldo became the latest ambassador for PokerStars. He is the second footballer this year, after Neymar Jr to promote the world`s largest online poker site. The immensely popular Ronaldo has been an avid poker player and even beat a top pro in a poker match.
