In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker’ we bring to you the weekly round up of the biggest online scores by Indian MTT players along with the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit.

Here are this week`s top stories

The rains are yet to come, but the 47th World Series of Poker (WSOP), that arrived on time has gripped Las Vegas with players coming in from all around the globe! The Indian team continues to march along and after an initial score by Samay Parikh, the baton was taken forward last week by Team PokerStars Pro Aditya Agarwal, Sumit Sapra and Raghav Bansal. Aditya was the only Indian to make it in the money in Event 14 – $1,500 Millionaire Maker, finishing at 228th place for $5,702, amidst an entry-field of 7,190 players. Sapra and Bansal cashed in Event 6 – $1,500 No-Limit Hold`em at 93rd place for $3,655, and 250th place for $2,361, respectively. The action is set to escalate, as the WSOP begins to enter its mid-phase and more players including Shravan Chhabria and Akash Malik will be joining the Indian team this week.

Despite WSOP stealing all the thunder and the majority of players busy at Vegas, players back home kept up the fighting spirit by making some impressive scores online. Piyush ‘Piyush16’ Gupta debuts as our ‘PokerGuru Star of the Week’ with four cashes amounting to $11,973, followed by several more impressive scores by other players.

The Indian online scene remains abuzz with the Spartan Poker INR 1 Crore June Bonanza, which has already awarded INR 25 Lakhs in the opening week, with three more weeks to go.

Besides the above, we have news reports from Goa, where politicians continue to accuse each other over casino issues.

From the international front, we have 888poker, with multiple brand-ambassador shake-ups, legal developments in online gambling in the US and updates from the Global Poker League’s (GPL) second phase, the Summer Season.

In tournament reports we have results from the Main Events at Poker Night in America (PNIA) Golden Nugget and the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT), Walsall.

Piyush ‘Piyush16’ Gupta cashed four times, the first three at PokerStars, altogether making almost $11,973 and claims his first ‘PokerGuru Star of the Week’ title. He made $5,779.85 for 4th place in the ‘Bounty Builder $215, 100K GTD’ and another $3,475.51 for 3rd place in the ‘Hot $162, $25K GTD’. He scored $1,394.70 for 5th place in the ‘Hot $162, $15K GTD’ and $1,323 for 2nd place in the Party Poker ‘Heavyweight: Apollo – $5,000 GTD’

Other notable scores include –

Phanindra ‘terabyte11’ Akkina cashed $9,317.02 for 1st place in the PokerStars ‘$320 Wednesday PLO [6-Max], $30K GTD’

Sahil ‘AntiloG’ Agarwal was right behind with $9,150.25 for 3rd place in the PokerStars ‘Big $109, $50K GTD’

Anmol ‘anmols94’ Srivats made three scores, totaling almost $8,976. He made two scores of $3,956.95 for 2nd place in ‘The $15,000 Crocodile’ tournament and $3,657.50 for 4th place in ‘The $40,000 TURBO Mega Deep’ respectively, both at 888poker. He also won $1,363.32 for 1st place in the PokerStars ‘$27 NLHE [6-Max, Hyper-Turbo,3-Stack], $6K GTD’

Sahil ‘$lim$hady19’ Chutani won $2,717.82 including bounties for 3rd place in the PokerStars ‘Bounty Builder $44, $40K GTD’ and made $1,276.63 for 3rd place in the PokerStars ‘Hot $16.50, $10K GTD’

Vinay ‘vinaycdy’ Choudhry won $1,677.60 for 2nd place in the PokerStars ‘$11 Mini-Monday, 6-Max [Early Edition], $10K GTD’ and also collected $1,524.30 including bounties in the PokerStars ‘$109 Saturday KO [Late Edition], $20K GTD’

Anant ‘AnantP’ Purohit won $2,504.05 for 1st place in the PokerStarsBounty Builder $11, $40K GTD’

Kunal ‘kcdesi’ Chandra cashed $2,340.30 for 50th place in the PokerStars ‘$215 Sunday Million, $1M GTD’

Amit ‘amitshur2984’ Sur won $2,020.03 for 5th place in the PokerStars ‘Hot $162, $20K GTD’

Arsh ‘BigggTymeR’ Grover won $797.58 for 1st place in the PokerStars ‘$11 NLHE [4-Max], $2K GTD’ and $527.31 in the 888poker ‘$30 NLHE, $1,500 GTD’

Rohit ‘gamblerking’ Kumar won $1,291.92 for 2nd place in the PokerStars$27 NLHE [6-Max, Hyper-Turbo, 3-Stack], $6K GTD’

Anurag ‘13anurag’ Shrivatsava won $1,241.41 for 1st place in the PokerStars ‘Hot $4.40, $6K GTD’

Arvindhan ’tiltalert86′ Lakshminarayan won $832.16 for 3rd place in the PokerStars ‘Bounty Builder $11 [Saturday Special], $15K GTD’.

Spartan Poker – INR 1 Crore June Bonanza

2016 WSOP Highlights

It was an exhilarating week for Indian players at WSOP, with all giving it their best shot.

There were more cashes, with Aditya Agarwal being the sole Indian to make Day 2 in Event 14 – $1,500 Millionaire Maker and finally cashing at 228th place for $5,702. Sumit Sapra and Raghav Bansal cashed in Event 6 – $1,500 No-Limit Hold`em at 93rd place for $3,655, and 50th place finish for $2,361, respectively. Players went on to participate many other events, including peripheral ones at the Venetian poker room.

Shravan Chhabria and Raghav Bansal are to join the Indian team in Vegas this week, adding to the action.

Several more bracelet winners were found in succeeding events –

Event #2: $565 Colossus II

Beating a huge field of over 21K entries was Ben Keeline who won the event for $1 million. A large Indian team participated, but only Samay Parikh cashed at 631st place for $2,837.

Event #6: $1,500 No-Limit Hold`em

Peter Eichhardt claimed his first WSOP title for a winning amount of $438,417.

Event #7: $1500 2-7 Draw Lowball (No-Limit)

Ryan D’Angelo collected his first WSOP bracelet for a payday of $92,338.

Event #8: $1,500 H.O.R.S.E

Ian Johns won the title for $212,604 and his first WSOP gold.

Event #9: $10,000 Heads Up No-Limit Hold’em Championship

Alan Percal emerged the winner of Event 9 – $10,000 Heads Up No-Limit Hold’em Championship for his first WSOP bracelet and prize money of $320,574. Samay Parikh played this event, but exited early.

Event #10: $1500 6-Handed No-Limit Hold’em

Mike Cordell took down the event for $346,088 and his first WSOP bracelet. Several Indians, including Aditya Agarwal played the event, but none could make any headway.

Event #11: $10,000 Dealers Choice 6-Handed Championship

Jean Gaspard claimed his first WSOP bracelet, winning the event for $306,621.

Event #12: $565 Pot-Limit Omaha

Ryan Laplante was the champion for a payday of $190,328 and his first WSOP gold. Sumit Sapra made a brave attempt, but was eliminated on Day 1 itself.

Event #13: $1500 Seven Card Razz

Finally, a veteran collected the title in Event 13, $1500 Seven Card Razz. It was Rep Porter who claimed his third bracelet and the winning prize of $142,624.

Event #14: $1500 Millionaire Maker No-Limit Hold’em

Aditya Agarwal, Sumit Sapra, Samay Parikh, Raghav Bansal, Jagdeep Singh and Satchit Kapur were among the many Indians to join the action in Event 14 – $1,500 Millionaire Maker.

Only Aditya made Day 2 and ultimately cashed at 228th place for $5,702.

Indian-origin player Nipun Java also cashed at 547th place for $3,221.

Currently, 15 players are remaining for Day 4, led by Alessio Dicesare who has 7,200,000 in chips.

Event #15: $1500 Eight Game Mix (6-Handed)

Paul Volpe bagged the lead on Day 3 and went on to collect his second bracelet, along with the winning prize of $149,943.

Event #16: $10,000 2-7 Draw Lowball Championship (No-Limit)

Jason Mercier got himself his fourth WSOP bracelet in Event 16 – $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Championship, with the winner’s share of $273,335.

Event #17: $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em and Event #18: $3,000 H .O. R. S. E are currently underway.

Goa Casino Issue

The political game of accusations and denials continued in Goa, with Francis D’Souza, Deputy Chief Minister stating that Goa was not just known for casinos, which he added were not a bad thing in any case. D’Souza made a stir by claiming that Goa was popular for its liquor, casinos and EDM festivals.

This statement came just a few days after the Ashish Khetan, AAP party leader took on the ruling BJP and accused them of reneging on every pre-poll promise they had made in 2012.

888poker Pro Team Shakeups

A series of changes in brand partnerships occurred at 888poker. It began with the exit of the Jackie Glazier. Thereafter, the site went on to sign two young online sensations, in Jeff Grossman, a Twitch online poker streamer and Chris Moorman, known to be one of the best online players in the world.

Legal Developments in Online Gaming in the US

The status of online poker seems to be improving in the US, with several parallel developments. Michigan was the fastest in getting its online bill approved by the Regulatory Reform Committee and is now ready for vote at the Senate floor.

In California, Senator Adam Gray made further amendments to appease all objections and hopes are high for the bill to get a full vote from the Committee on Appropriations by next week.

Missouri and Colorado simultaneously legalized daily fantasy sports (DFS) with a bill, joining four other states that have already done so.

Finally, New Jersey approved of another online gaming license for GVC Holdings, which will partner with the land-based Borgata for its operations.

GPL – Summer Series

The GPL has now come to Las Vegas and begun its Summer Series, Heat 1. The first of the matches were conducted in the highly publicized “Cube”.

Making an impact with his debut was none other than “Breaking Bad” star Aaron Paul of the LA Sunset team, who emerged from underdog position to beat pro Fabrice Soulier of the Paris Aviators in a three-match series. Despite being a recreational player, Paul won two of the three matches.
