In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker’ we bring to you the weekly roundup of the biggest online scores by Indian MTT players along with the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit.

Here are this week`s top stories:

With the holiday season behind us, poker action picked up steam this past week with the start of the 2017 PokerStars Championship in Bahamas – the first PokerStars event since the rebranding. The series has already crowned its first big winner in American pro Jason Koon who topped 54 entries in the $100,000 Super High Roller Event For $1,650,300.

Closer home, the World Poker Tour National (WPT) Cambodia being held at the Queenco Hotel & Casino in Sihanoukville, Cambodia saw a large Indian contingent in attendance. Team India came out all guns blazing with several deep runs and two titles already in the bag. Four Indian players managed to make it to Day 3 in the Main event. Nitin Jain came particularly close to making it big but ended up finishing fourth for $12,170, with Manoj Pentakota (6th place for $7,296), Kalyan Chakravarthy (7th place for $6,078) and Charu Vikram Kaushik (11th place for $2,656) all making in-the-money finishes.

The next week promises even more action with the start of the Asian Poker Tour Kickoff 2017 that starts from Jan 11. Adda52.com pro Kunal Patni is confirmed to be attending the series. Starting alongside APT Kickoff will be the Aussie Millions Poker Championship that is slated to run from Jan 11 – 30!

Online action too promises to escalate with the start of the TCOOP series on Jan 18 and the Super XL Series on 888poker a day later. The virtual felts were buzzing with action and topping the online charts yet again is Gaurav ‘Ayya10258’ Ayya who banked $7,959.01 from three noteworthy cashes and for this he takes our ‘PokerGuru Star of the Week’ title.

In other highlights, well-known poker pro Bryan Huang Diwei parted ways with PokerStars. Summing up our report is news of David Peters winning the GPI ‘Player of the Year’ title, Delta Corp announcing the launch of its Sikkim Casino, TwoPlusTwo forum database getting hacked and Amaya Gaming settled a deal with the Scheinbergs on the pending payment.

Gaurav ‘Ayya10258’ Ayya topped the weekly leaderboard, pocketing close to $8,000 from three big scores. He won $3,910.76 for 4th place in the PokerStars ‘Hot $215, $35K GTD’ and also cashed $2,720.47 for 3rd place in thePokerStars ‘Hot $162, $15K GTD’. Gaurav further added to his weeks scorecard by winning the PokerStars ‘Bounty Builder $22, $10K GTD’ for $1,327.78, making him our ‘PokerGuru Star of the Week’.

Other notable scores include:

Anmol ‘anmols’ A Srivats made $3,002.99 for 1st place in the PokerStars ‘$33 Bubble Rush, $15K GTD’ and also won $1,260.00 for 2nd place in the Party Poker ‘$5,000 GTD PLO 6-Max: Heavyweight’. He further scored $1,306.87 for 3rd place in the PokerStars ‘Big $82, $8K GTD’ and won $1,925.00 for 1st place in the Party Poker ‘$5,000 GTD – Apollo: Heavyweight’

Eka ‘Goforitrejam’ Vedhantham won $2,814.47 for 1st place in the PokerStars ‘$27 NLHE [6-Max, Hyper-Turbo], $10K GTD’

Sriharsha ‘indiandurr’ Doddapaneni won $2,254.87 for 1st place in the PokerStars ‘Hot $27, $10K GTD’

Sumit ‘silwal_7’ Silwal won $2,237.89 for 2nd place in the PokerStars ‘Bounty Builder $82, $20K GTD’

Rubin ‘poopalert123’ Labroo won $2,018.28 for 2nd place in the PokerStars ‘Bounty Builder $44 [Saturday Special], $75K GTD’

Vineet ‘vineetpoker’ Kumar won $1,760.00 for 2nd place in the 888poker ‘The $8,000 Lightning 6-Max’ and also won $1,252.49 for 4th place in the PokerStars ‘Hot $82, $10K GTD’

Pranay ‘mitarachi89’ Kapoor won $1,305.61 for 4th place in the PokerStars ‘Omania $55 PLO [6-Max], $18K GTD’

Abhishek ‘abhi147’ Rathod won $1,031.00 for 8th place in the PokerStars ‘Big $55, $50K GTD’

Vikram ‘thedead parrots’ Singh cashed $949.54 for 4th place in the PokerStars ‘$22 NLHE, $12K GTD’

The action is set to escalate in the next two weeks with the start of two big online series. Action starts with the PokerStars 2017 Turbo Championship of Online Poker (TCOOP) that will run from Jan 18 – 29 and will alongside the 888poker Super Series that is slated from Jan 19 – 31.

888poker Launches $1 Million Treasure Quest Promotion

Online players are in for a treat as 888poker announced a new $1 Million pirate-themed promotion called Treasure Quest. Through completing a variety of missions, players get random prize likely to be an entry into a $6,000 Pirate’s Prizes freeroll tournament along with cash bonuses of $1, $5 or $50.

WPT Cambodia Recap

The large Indian contingent has made quite an impact at the ongoing WPT National Cambodia series with two Indians – Sumit Sapra and Deepak Raina winning side event titles. While Sapra took down the $550 PLO Deepstack Event for $5,530 (INR 3.77 Lakhs) edging past Phanindra Akkina in heads-up play, Deepak Raina took top honors in the No Limit Hold`em Super Knockout ($250/Bounty) event for $3,360 (INR 2.29 Lakhs)!

The highlight of the series i.e. $1,485 Main Event saw Team India coming out all guns blazing with four players from the Team making it in the final 12 on Day 3. Charu Vikram Kaushik (11th for $2,656), Kalyan Chakravarthy (7th for $6,078), Day 2 chip leader Manoj Pentakota (6th place for $7,296) and Nitin Jain (4th place for $12,170) all made it in the money.

Delta Corp Announces Launch of Sikkim Casino on January 14

Delta Corp recently announced the launch of its Casino Deltin Denzong at Hotel Denzong Regency in Gangtok on Jan 14. Sikkim already has two existing casinos — Casino Mahjong in the Mayfair Resort and Casino Sikkim in Hotel Royal Plaza.

Formerly known as PCA, the 9-day series will be hosted between Jan 6 – 14, with over 90 tournaments in the schedule. Amaya Gaming Finalizes Deferred Payment Deal With Scheinbergs

The Canada-based Amaya Gaming company will not have to issue new equity, as it was successful in closing a deal to make deferred payment to PokerStars’ former owners i.e. Scheinbergs. Amaya informed all its shareholders this week about the plans to repay the remaining $197.7 Million of the $4.9 Billion that was agreed upon for buying the Rational Group from the father-son duo of Isai and Mark Scheinberg in 2014.

David Peters Wins 2016 GPI Player of The Year Title

The 29-year-old poker pro from Ohio, David Peters pipped a seemingly undefeatable Fedor Holz to win the 2016 GPI Player of The Year title. Peters accumulated a total of 3,666.31 GPI POY points, while Holz collected 3,644.80 points to end second.
