In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker’ we bring to you the weekly round up of the biggest online scores by Indian MTT players along with the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit.

Here are this week`s top stories

The past week has been a rollercoaster ride, escalating the excitement in poker land to another dimension. The final week of big online series is always the most interesting. The run down till the grand finale is always the most action packed and it has been no different for both WCOOP and 888poker`s XL Eclipse series which came to a close this week. Steven “SvZff” van Zadelhoff won the WCOOP High Main Event for $1.6 million while ‘CllsDntMttr’ took down the 888poker XL Eclipse’s Main Event for $273,038.

The Indian scorecard at both the series skyrocketed, with numerous deep runs made by our challengers. The highlight scorer and our PokerGuru Star of the Week is Anmol ‘anmols’ A Srivats after he made a 45th place finish in the WCOOP-79-H: $5,200 NLHE Main Event banking a cool $32,798.48 in prize money.

Meanwhile, domestic sites were abuzz with action with Adda52’s Poker Million Tour (PMT) Main Event and PokerBaazi Super Sunday ₹15 lakhs GTD, both playing down to a champion. PMT Main Event attracted 170 entries and 54 re-entries with Romit ‘ft83’ Advani claiming the title for ₹6,75,000 while Baazi Super Sunday event attracted 153 runners with ‘Shanni’ emerging victorious for ₹5,00,000.

Online buffs are now eagerly awaiting India’s biggest online event till date i.e. PokerBaazi’s The MoneyMaker event with ₹1 crore GTD which is set to take center stage this week. That’s not all as India’s biggest poker site Adda52.com is hosting Dussehra Knockout 100K with ₹5 lakhs GTD between September 25 – 29.

PokerStars is back in the news as they have announced the schedule of the upcoming PokerStars Festival Sochi. Meanwhile, MGM revealed its plans for a new casino in Connecticut which has already started generating controversies.

In other news, we bring you the updates of various international tournaments such as the Poker Masters, WPT Borgata Poker Open Championship, APT Philippines 2017 II, Commerce Poker Series, WSOP Circuit IP Biloxi, HPT Golden Gates and PokerStars Festival Uruguay.

The past few years have seen an increasing Indian presence at big online events and it was the same this year too. A large number of our Indian challengers were busy claiming their place in this global arena and chief among them was Anmol ‘anmols’ Srivats. He made an excellent 45th place finish in PokerStars ‘WCOOP-79-H: $5,200 NLHE [Main Event], $10M GTD & $1.5M+ to first!’ event. Srivats netted $32,798.48 for his finish and for this he is our ‘PokerGuru Star of the Week’.

WCOOP 2017

One of the world’s most prestigious online tournaments – PokerStars WCOOP ended its events roster this week after its Main event came to a close. The event attracted a massive field of 2,183 with the top 278 places getting paid.

The event was ultimately won by Steven “SvZff” van Zadelhoff, who defeated Joshua “joshuah333” Herman in the heads-up battle. Zadelhoff took home the $1.6 million top prize.

888poker XL Eclipse

Action was simultaneously on at the 888poker XL Eclipse Series. The 15-day series wrapped up its 197 events after crowning the Main Event champion in ‘CllsDntMttr’ who banked $273,038.

PokerStars Reveals Sochi Festival Schedule

This week, PokerStars released the official schedule for the upcoming PokerStars Festival Sochi that is slated to run from October 16 – 22. The series will feature 16 exciting events headlined by the RUB 66,000 (~$1,100) Main Event with RUB 30,000,000 (~$500,000) in guaranteed prize money.

MGM Announces Casino Plans in Connecticut Named MGM Bridgeport

MGM Resorts International recently announced its plan for a new casino in Bridgeport, Connecticut. MassLive reported that the plans, “do not appear to fit within Connecticut’s current casino laws” and will result in “placing the company at odds with both tribal gaming operators and the gaming plans of Connecticut’s state government.”

Steffen Sontheimer Wins Poker Masters $100K Event and The Purple Jacket

The inaugural Poker Masters series was a grand success attracting the crème de la crème of poker world. Germany’s High Roller player Steffen “Goose” Sontheimer had a trailblazing series as he made our final tables and picked up two titles banking $2,733,000 in total cashes to win he first Poker Masters Purple Jacket™.

The grand finale of the series i.e. $100K event attracted 36 runners and Sontheimer cruised to the victory pocketing $1,512,000 in prize money after defeating Christian Christner in the heads-up battle.

Guo Liang Chen Wins WPT Borgata Poker Open Championship

The WPT Borgata Poker Open Championship drew 1,132 hopefuls which was conquered by local regular grinder Guo Liang Chen. He banked $789,058, a Hublot Big Bang Steel watch, a $5,000 membership from JetSmarter and a $15,000 seat into the season-ending WPT Tournament of Champions.

Sung Ho Kim Wins APT Philippines 2017 II Main Event

The five-day long Asian Poker Tour (APT) Philippines II $1,650 Main Event attracted 132 runners to create a $192,060 prize pool with the top 18 players making it in the money. When the event came to a close, it was Korea’s Sung Ho Kim who claimed the title along with the APT Championship Ring and $40,250 in prize money.

Sean Yu Wins Commerce Poker Series Main Event

The Commerce Poker Series $1,100 Main Event boasted of a cool $1 million guarantee which eventually fell short by $100K resulting in an overlay. Sean Yu continued with his hot run in live events and took down the title for $209,030. Yu also pledged 5% of his earnings to the Hurricane Harvey relief.

Kyle Cartwright Wins WSOP Circuit IP Biloxi Main Event

Kyle Cartwright used to play WSOP Circuit events very frequently at a time and had a red-letter day once again this week after he claimed his 7th WSOPC Ring besting the 343-player field at the WSOP Circuit IP Biloxi $1,675 Main Event ($500,000 GTD). Cartwright pocketed $118,332 in prize money for the finish.

Alex Greenblatt Wins HPT Golden Gates

The Heartland Poker Tour Golden Gates attracted 542 entries over the course of four starting flights with the top 63 finishers getting paid. Alex Greenblatt topped the field and banked his biggest live cash till date of $179,274. Colorado based poker community favorite Kevin “Phwap” Boudreau finished in fourth place.

Julio Belluscio Wins PokerStars Festival Uruguay Main Event

The PokerStars Festival Uruguay Main Event saw 261 entries and the champion emerged in 51-year-old Julio Belluscio after an ICM heads-up deal was agreed upon with Julio Arocena. Belluscio banked $66,748 for his efforts.
