In the PokerGuru feature ‘This Week in Poker’ we bring to you the weekly roundup of the biggest online scores by Indian MTT players along with the top stories from both the live and online poker circuit.

Here are this week`s top stories:

The spotlight was all on the Deltin Poker Tournament (DPT) in Goa that ended this past week, but only after crowning several winners, some known names and some new. These included Jasven Saigal (10K Kickoff), Manoj Pentakota (60K High Roller), Imran Khan (35K Main Event), Banman Warr (15K Bounty) and Jagdeep Singh (15K 6-Max PLO).

Online action was not far behind with regulars burning the felts and claiming his first “PokerGuru Star of the Week” title for this year was Team PokerStars pro Aditya Agarwal for four scores making about $15K!

We have lots more, with news about things getting worse for casinos in Goa on the domestic front. On the international scene, there seems hope for poker in California with a new online bill proposed.

Then on the gaming front, PokerStars announced a new live tour – the PokerStars London Series with five stops for 2017. It was also time for accolades, with the American Poker Awards and Linda Johnson getting the first World Poker Tour (WPT) Honors Award.

Black Friday continues to haunt and in a recent report, Scott Tom, one of the accused pleaded ‘not guilty’ to charges. Brand tie-ups and business expansion continued with Unibet signing on three well-known pros and the Kindred Group acquiring Red32.

Tournament reports include an Indian, Raminder Singh winning the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Circuit Palm Beach Kennel Club Main Event for $168,995. Live action was also registered with the LA Poker Classic Main Event, and Phil Hellmuth winning a side event.

Records were also made with Cord Garcia claiming his second Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) title, Darren Elias picking up his third WPT title and Maurice Hawkins collecting his ninth WSOP Circuit ring.

Aditya ‘Adi Agarwal’ Agarwal continues his excellent run and this week he makes more than $15K from five cashes. These get him our “PokerGuru Star of the Week” title. His scores include $6,523.20 for second place in the PokerStars ‘Hot $109, $40K GTD’ and another runner-up finish for $3,453.33 in the PokerStars ‘Hot $162, $15K GTD’. Agarwal also made $1,073.54 for a sixth place in the PokerStars ‘$109 Saturday KO [Early Edition], $40K GTD’ and $4,395.32 for a ninth place in the PokerStars ‘$215 Sunday Warm-Up, $375K Gtd – Guarantee Boost!’

Last year, Aditya Agarwal bagged eight of our weekly titles and with so many other players giving it their best shot, the coming weeks promise to be a treat for railbirds.

Other notable scores include –

‘xmmukesh’ won $2,591.50 for 3rd place in the Party Poker ‘Heavyweight: Clubber – $25K GTD Turbo’ and made $2,417.23 for 1st place in the Party Poker ‘$10,000 GTD: Middleweight’ and won $1,169.50 for 3rd place in the Party Poker ‘$10,000 GTD – Progressive KO: Heavyweight’

Armaan ‘armaan007’ Kochhar won $4,026.60 for 3rd place in the PokerStars ‘Hot $55, $35K GTD’ and won $1,388.29 for 2nd place in the PokerStars ‘$109 NLHE [Turbo], $4K GTD’

Siddharth ‘siddhu’ Mundada won $3,764.48 for 2nd place in the PokerStars ‘Bounty Builder $162, $35K GTD’ and won $1,421.10 for 1st place in the PokerStars ‘$82 NLHE [Turbo], $4K GTD’

Abhishek ‘AvenueA’ Shivhare won $4,222.27 for 17th place in the PokerStars ‘$215 SUNDAY MILLION, $1,000,000 GTD’

Sriharsha ‘Indiandurr’ Doddapaneni won $1,856.40 for 1st place in the BlackChip ‘$7,500 GTD 8-Max’

Gaurav ‘Ayya10258’ Ayya won $1,181.48 for 7th place in the PokerStars ‘Bounty Builder $33, $100K GTD’

Dhaval ‘dhavalzoso’ Mudgal won $1,141.59 for 70th place in the PokerStars ‘$215 SUNDAY MILLION, $1,000,000 GTD’

Sharad ‘keenyle’ Rao won $1,120.80 for 57th place in the PokerStars ‘$215 SUNDAY MILLION, $1,000,000 GTD’

Anmol ‘anmols’ A Srivats won $1,030.65 for 106th place in the PokerStars ‘$215 SUNDAY MILLION, $1,000,000 GTD’

DPT February 2017

The DPT February edition was thronged by a large number of players, with practically all guarantees crushed.

Winners included old-hats, as well as first-timers. Of the latter, debutant Imran Khan took down the 35K Main Event for INR 28.30 lakhs after defeating a field of 303 entries.

The 60K High Roller also found a new winner in Manoj Pentakota, who took home INR 33 lakhs in prize money. The 15K Bounty was also won by newbie, Banman Warr for INR 7.2 lakhs.

Goa Elections to Decide Fate of Casinos

The March 31 deadline for vacating the River Mandovi will now be handled by whichever party comes into power after the recent Goa elections. With most parties voicing strong objections against casinos, their fate hangs in balance. The Congress has already announced that it would not renew casino liquor licenses after the deadline if it wins the elections.

California Online Poker Bill Re-Introduced

Despite not having met any success past 10 years, a new online gaming bill was introduced this year in California. The bill continues to be favorable to PokerStars, which was strongly objected to by the Tribals earlier, so it remains to be seen if it will see the light of the day.

Poker Stars London Series

A new live tour was announced by PokerStars – the PokerStars London Series with five stops for 2017. The tour will have events with buy-ins of £275 and a £550 Super event, with feedback from players attending the UKIPT and Hippodrome Classics.

17 personalities from the poker industry were honored with awards in various categories at the American Poker Awards recently. Pros who received awards included Jason Mercier, Ari Engel and Maurice Hawkins.

Black-Friday Accused Pleads ‘Not Guilty’

One of the 11 accused in the Black Friday imbroglio, Scott Tom, returned after six years spent in Antigua to plead ‘not guilty’ to charges in the US. The co-founder of Absolute Poker’s lawyer claimed the case would be resolved soon.

Unibet recently signed on three well-known and ‘friendly’ pros – Ian Simpson, Dara O’Kearney and David Lappin as its brand ambassadors. The new joinees are expected to enhance the brand’s social media footprint.

Delhi-born Raminder Singh, now settled in the US took down the WSOP Circuit Palm Beach Kennel Club Main Event $168,995 and his first gold ring. Despite playing many years, he calls himself an amateur.

LA Poker Classic

A four-way chop at the LA Poker Classic NLH $1M GTD found runner-up Aditya Prasetyo claiming a higher payday of $186,770, with winner Jesse Vilchez collecting $185,010.

14-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth was seen at the same festival taking down a side event, $1,100 Omaha Hi-Low/Stud Hi-Low for $25,200.

Cord Garcia Claims Second HPT Title

Making history, Cord Garcia took down the same event in six months. This time he made $248,732 at the HPT Golden Gates $1,650 No-limit Hold’em Main Event, after defeating a field of 787 entries.

Ninth WSOP Circuit Ring For Maurice Hawkins

Just days after getting the American Poker Awards, ‘Breakthrough Performance of the Year’ honor, Maurice Hawkins made history by claiming his ninth WSOP Circuit ring at the Palm Beach Kennel Club, $365 No-Limit Hold’em event for $13,527.
