After Bengaluru, KN Suresh Secretary, Indian Poker Association is now busy exerting legal pressure to ensure smooth operations for poker in the historic city of Kolkata.

In a recent report from Glaws.in, it was stated that KN Suresh has filed a writ petition in the Calcutta High Court seeking interference-free functioning of his upcoming poker club in the city. He has filed the petition to operate and run the new poker room without any harassment or trouble from the Police or any such authorities. Suresh has also sought interim relief from the Court, so that authorities do not move against his club or him, until this matter is resolved.

The whole issue began in mid-June, when Suresh and his partner Aditya “Bitti” Agarwal were planning to have a soft launch for their latest project of an IPA poker room at the Princeton Club, Kolkata on June 18. Due to obscure legal complications the launch was interrupted by authorities and Suresh then decided to settle the matter once and for all.

Suresh had faced a similar situation in Bengaluru in 2013, when he pioneered a case for poker as a game of skill and in a landmark judgement won it, paving the way for the mushrooming of the Garden City as the next popular destination for poker.

Suresh has now set his sights on Kolkata, where unlike Bengaluru there already exists a law in Section 2(b) of The West Bengal Prize Competition and Gambling Act, 1957 that states that poker, rummy, bridge and nap are excluded from the ambit of gambling, thus making it legal for poker clubs to operate.

Suresh has cited this in his argument to strengthen his case that poker is a game of skill and thus legal.

The matter Kizhakke Naduvath Suresh v. State of West Bengal & Others was listed before Justice Dipankar Datta, who has directed the respondents to formulate their stand by Thursday, July 2.

The Court’s positive decision will not only ensure peaceful and smooth functioning of all other poker rooms in West Bengal, but will also have an important impact on the current legal debate over the game all over the country.
