On Sunday, 34 players entered the final event of the GAPL April edition i.e. 5K re-buy event and Rajat Sood (cover image) was the last player standing once the dust had settled. Some smart poker combined with a little luck got Rajat a well-deserved win and his first tournament victory.

The event started late due to the delayed conclusion of the live satellites. The event gave players an option to make one rebuy in the tournament for 3,000 chips and one add-on for 5,000 chips. Action was fast and furious as just one hour into play; we had already seen 16 rebuys with players like Dhaval Mudgal and Deepak Chawla making early rebuys.

Final Table Recap

The elimination of Gokul Krishna in eleventh place set up the final table. Pride poker room`s Madhav Gupta was an active participant at this edition of GAPL and his consistency finally paid off as he started the final table in the chip lead. Second time lucky, young gun Dhaval Mudgal fared considerably better on his second innings in the event and made good use of his rebuy to start the final table in second chip position. Other notables headlining the stacked final table included Amar Reddy and Jujhar Kochhar with both making repeat final table appearances at this edition of the GAPL.

Final Table Chip Counts

1. Madhav Gupta – 55300
2. Dhaval Mudgal – 41400
3. Leroy Windel – 38800
4. Shashank Jain – 36100
5. Shanky Agarwal – 21900

The two short stacks, Jujhar Kochhar and Rishsi BN were the first ones to leave the final table in tenth and ninth places respectively. Amar Reddy took eight when his came up short against Dhaval’s on the board of . Leroy Windle started the final table third in chips but by this time he had already lost a major chunk of his chips. His last hand saw him move all in for his remaining 9,000 chips. Shashank Jain shoved his stack of 31,400 in the middle and Dhaval Mudgal too announced all-in. Shashank’s pocket queens earned him the pot, eliminating Leroy in the process.

The top five players were to make it in the money at the 5K re-buy event and Shyam Sahni would earn the tag of the money bubble after finishing the tournament in sixth place. The chip leader at the start of the final table, Madhav Gupta was the next player to leave after he lost a major chunk of his chips to Dhaval Mudgal in his penultimate hand. Shanky Agarwal took over Madhav’s remaining stack to send him off in fifth place. At this point, the relatively silent Rajat Sood turned on the aggression when he eliminated Shashank Jain in fourth place. Before going in for the ten-minute break, Rajat was in the chip lead followed closely by Shanky Agarwal, while Dhaval was also not too far behind in chips.

Post the break we saw Shanky loosing a major pot to Dhaval when Shanky’s pocket sevens failed to match up against Dhaval’s aces. Just a few hands later, Shanky lost another big hand to Rajat when Rajat’s clipped a king on the river to beat Shanky’s . Left with a few thousand chips, Shanky moved all in after Dhaval raised on the button. Dhaval called and Shanky once again came up short and was sent off in 3rd place.

Dhaval, who at one point was the shortest stack on the final table, staged a heroic comeback to get heads-up for the title against Rajat Sood. However this was clearly Rajat`s day who went on to win the GAPL 5K re-buy event with his ace high while Dhaval had to settle for a runner-up finish.
