After the overwhelming success in Philippines, the Asia Poker League (APL) headed to Vietnam with its APL Road Series Vol. 2, with the proceedings kicking off on May 25 at the newly opened Pro Poker Club in Ho Chi Minh City. The venue opened its doors on January 19 with 20 tables and has added 15 extra tables to accommodate players for this series.

The series will run through June 4 headlined by the VND 5 Billion GTD Main Event and the high buy-in VND 25 Million buy-in High Roller event. The Main Event features four entry flights and the guarantee has been easily crushed with total 864 registrations clocked in.

India Poker Pros’ Vikram Verma had tied up with APL to host satellites for Indian players and almost 40 players have won seats to the series. Notables in attendance feature Dhaval Mudgal, Sahil Agarwal, Manoj Pentakota, Anup Palod, MadOverPoker pro Zarvan Tumboli, Sumit Sapra, Adarsh Jayappa, Devesh Thapar, Rubin Labroo, Vidwath Shetty, Chiraag Patel, Chirag Sodha, Varun Gupta, Jaydeep Dawer, Akshay Nasa, Neeraj Gupta, Vineet Kumar, Anik Ajmera, Rajeev Kanjani, Rana Singh, Kush Kataria and Mukunda Dasharathy.

Team India has already opened their account with not one but two trophies along with few deep runs as well. Opening his innings in style, Young Gun Devesh Thapar shipped the KO Bounty event for VND 94,164,000 (~₹2.77 Lakhs) along with his first live tournament title. Giving him company in the winner’s circle was Bengaluru’s Adarsh Jayappa, who claimed his first international title after taking down the Super Deepstack Turbo event for VND 112,499,000 (~₹3.31 Lakhs).

Not just that, several Indians have already made it to Day 2 of the Main Event through the first three starting flights including Chiraag Patel (194,900), Sumit Sapra (142,600), Kush Kataria (121,500), Akshay Nasa (113,800), Rana Singh (109,700), Dhaval Mudgal (101,700), Vidwath Shetty (89,400), Zarvan Tumboli (75,700), Rubin Labroo (59,900) and Varun Gupta (38,600).

On Indian camp’s great start at the series, Verma said, “Indians are rocking in APL Vietnam like everywhere in world. Indian pros have proved their skill that now they are the talk to the town. Indian flag is flying high in Vietnam poker industry. I am sure one of our Indian players will win the APL main event.”

Speaking about his first live title, Thapar said, “Finally it’s First.” Thapar also shared his journey in the event, “Yeah it was a 2-day bounty event with 134 registrations. I registered very late, but luckily made a huge stack. But near the bubble which was 15 players left I lost a big hand with the guy 3rd in chips. Pocket queen’s vs Ace King and I became 13/15. Then it came to the final table, I had 2.5 big blinds which was like the shortest. The final table started and I doubled in the first hand – King Jack vs Ax 8x.”

“Then went crushing after that, I was always ahead and my hands held. I became the chip leader entering heads-up, and with god’s grace I won the event. It was a great experience and my first 1 place finish,” he added.

On the final hand of the event, Thapar said, “I had Kx Jx vs 4x 4x, Board came Jx 6x Ax 6x 3x”
